240hoke
Hey guys, Iidid some searching and couldnt find any really useful information on this topic. I have a t3/t4 turbo stg 5 .82 a/r. I bought it from TEP about 2 years ago new. Anyway I suppose I have neglected it a bit, iI ran it without an airfilter for most of its life, but i thought this woudl damage the wheel not hte bearing. Anyway i didnt think the turbo would go out this soon... I noticed I have a fair amount of shaft play, I can wiggle it back and forth. If I put pressure on the compressor wheel and spin it it will ever so slightly hit the housing sometimes. I also noticed it leaking oil out both the inlet and the outlet of the compressor. Today while i was under it i noticed oil was actually dripping a little out of the bottom from teh compressor housing seal. So i suppose its time for new bearings and seals. The turbo sounds fine and spools fine but i know its on the way out. I believe for now i wuld like to just have it rebuilt. I am looking for a good place to send it too. If anybody here can relate by personal expirence that would be awesome. I also read a few places including here that it was easy to rebuild them yourself but balancing is a very very crucial part to building a turbo that will last, so from what i have read and heard doing it yourself is liek a temporary fix. So.... i was gonna rule out rebuilding it myself unless there is something i dont know. Anyway just looking for some general advice on turbo rebuilding or where i can have it done. Im hoping to send the thing out monday. thanks for any help!

240Z Turbo
Not a problem to rebuild. Another option is the new bb cartridge from Garrett and it allows us to use the standard, non GT, wheels. Also, if the compressor wheel is damaged it may also be a good time to upgrade. Several options to choose from.

Clifton
After what you did with your car (nice job) you shouldn't have any problem doing the rebuild yourself. The parts are around $80. It's easier to do than you'ld think.
240hoke
What im worried about is the balancing. Ive read it isnt and issue if you have individually balanced blades but when they are blanced as an assymbly with hte nuts its almost impossible ot get them back right again. My friend redid the turbos on his 300zxtt and got about 10 miles down the roads before they started spewing oil on him again... his a toyota tech lol so he knows his stuff somewhat. Clifton
The compressor wheel and turbine are balanced individually. Only Turbonetics that I know of balances as an assembly. When they do they take the weight off the nut. I have replaced turbine wheels on T netics turbos and used a new nut without problems. It's the one on my car now. I have never had a turbo leak or come apart that I have rebuilt or swapped part on and have never balanced any of them. Of the 2 local turbo shops I get parts from, neither have a balancing machine and will tell it's not necessary.
thehelix112
How on earth would you balance a wheel? AFAIK the only way you balance is with the nuts, implying you always balance as an assembly. Dave
240hoke
they take meterial off the turbine wheel on the back. And yes it is from turbonetics....so its balanced with the nut I talked with james today and he said there is prolly more damage then i think since it has touched hte housing. He instructed me to shipp it off to Turbo's direct for a rebuild and assesment, he would get back with me as soon as they got it. What do yall think. I would love to save the money and do it myself but i dont want it to grenade? Would i be fine giving it a shot?
thehelix112
Fair enough. I would be very surprised if most new turbos weren't assembly balanced. Dave
yo2001
There are two ways to balance the turbos, component balance and dynamic balance. There is a way to rebuild a dynamic balanced turbo using a marker but most of the time I've touched a trbo, it's component balanced so no need to worry about the dyamic once its assembled. Anyway, I don't recommend doing the DIY rebuild unless you have the glass bead booth, good cleaning booth, micrometer and other gauges to check all the clearance. 0.002" off can make the turbo smoke or not long lasting. Plus, with alot of lateral movement due to failure on the trust bearing can cause alot of blueing around the rear seal which makes the turbo leak. Without doing it right, you will end up dragging carbon deposit back into the CHRA causing further damage to the bearing and its surface. Mex-Z-can
I've dealt with Majesctic Turbo recently. They did a great job on my T3, and they were very supportive when I was installing it (over the phone). It was not exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for. EZ-E
Yeah I like Majestic, the only thing with them is, when you want to do a turbo your way, they always seem to want to talk you into what THEY want to do, its the only thing that I didnt like about them.
