caen fred
I am helping some friends with a very low budget. They are going to race a Buick gs400, why, 'cause that's all they have. We need a low rear diff gearing... right now it's more suitable for Boneville than a drag strip ! Anyone ?
Mike C
You are first going to have to identify what rear is in the car. Is it a '67? Most likely it is the 8.2 BOP axle. Google will be your friend here. You will also need a limited slip. If you have one currently, It is most likely the two piece case. These are explosion prone. Replace with an Eaton. Tom's Differentials has best prices on Eaton's and should be able to hook you up with gears, bearings, seals, etc. Gears numerically higher than 3.23 are pretty uncommon from the factory, and considering your signature, not commonly available period. boodlefoof
Those GS400 cars (and GS455 cars) are starting to pick up in collector value... prices are going up. Depending on the condition of the car now, they could probably sell it, but something else and have a few bucks left over to hot rod with. caen fred
Thanks, it's a real pain to search for parts over here... And the Buick gs400 isn't the most popular choice over here
caen fred
They have zero value over here... nobodys know what it is... a bit like a 240Z ! Most of the Muscle cars lovers are going for the easy stuff like the Camaro/firebirds/mustang ... 'cause the supply for parts isn't too bad, but for a Buick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am gona need you guys
silicone boy
I had one of those in high school and I was embarrased to drive it because I went to one of those high schools where all the kids drove BMW's. How stupid I was. Looking back on it, I had a really cool ride.
John Scott
You might look for the whole rear end assembly. I thought all Buick, Pontiac, Olds, Chevy, had interchangable rears, coil spring, as long as it was from the same "Family" of cars i.e. Skylark/GS, Chevelle, LeMans/ GTO, Cutlass/F85/ 442, . My 68 442 ended up with a 10 bolt rear with aftermarket 5.13 Zoom gears from a Nova, (blew the ring gear bolts out the cover) and later a 12 bolt from a Chevelle with 4.11s. A '65 442 with a pathetic 2.56 rear and a powerglide(!) was upgraded to a 3.42 rear end from a 68, and a variable pitch T400 from a buick. All swaps were a direct bolt in. Sometimes there was a u-joint difference, but no big deal. If you have the knowledge or sources to set it up properly, aftermarket gear sets are available for the popular rear ends, GM 10 bolt, GM 12 bolt etc. Look at http://www.Summitracing.com ring and pinion sets. JMortensen
They do swap, but they aren't the same internally. When I worked for Randy's Ring and Pinion we used to sell a kit to convert your 8.2 BOP housing to accept 8.2 GM ring and pinions and carriers. Even that isn't the best deal, as GM parts are only easier to find, not easy to find, and IIRC available gear ratios for the GM diff were limited. I'd suggest a swap to a commonly available rear end. Don't know what that would be in France. Maybe 8.5 GM 10 bolt? 12 bolt would be stronger, but I'd imagine that the 10 bolt 8.5 is more common. MikeC is right BTW, the Eaton LSD would be a good upgrade if you decide to run the stock axle.
