Flat top pistons

I just picked up my F54 block and N42 head this weekend. They are beautiful. I am so excited to get this rolling and will take pics and keep everyone updated. My next step here is to buy some new flat tops. Does anyone know where I can get these? I want to use the L28 rods, so I think Arizona Z is out of the picture. Thanks everyone I have learned so much.

Try Nissan, what you are looking for are stock pistons for an '80-83 non-turbo 280ZX.

I agree with jmortensen though, get the 240Z pistons from a '73 (these are the ones with the 9mm bolts); then get an LD28 crank and some larger pistons and you have yourself a nice stroker! :D

Can you replace the 8mm bolts with 9mm bolts on 240 rods or is there something different about the rods themselfs? also what kind of displacement does the l28 crank and 240 rods with the AZC pistons give you... 2.9 liter 3.0?

I have 72 240 rods are thoes 8 or 9 mm?

Zeiss 150 brings up a good point. I have a '71 L24, those are the 8mm bolts are they not? Can I simply change the bolts, and how big of a deal is it that if I do run the L24 rods with the 8mm vs the 9mm bolts going to make? And, Jon, in terms of running the L24 rods, what kind of performance up grade is this? I know Arizona Z sells the rods too, but for the set it like $350.

The difference is in the rod/stroke ratio. I wouldn't go WAY out of my way to do this, but if you can find the rods for $100 or less I'd say it's worth it. Search rod/stroke ratio here or on the web in general and you'll find all kinds of info on the differences and benefits you get from different ratios. L24 rods makes no difference to displacement at all. N42 block will take the same pistons as the F54.

To further explain about the rod bolts, the 9mm of course is preferred because it's a bit larger the thus stronger...now if you have the 8mm ones they will work just fine, and as I understand it ARP now has the 8mm bolts available so you could upgrade to them and be just as well off as having the 9mm (maybe better). In any case if you are not building up a serious race engine then the difference between the 8 and 9mm bolts will not matter.

JessZ, the '71 rods that were asked about are 8mm (providing that they are stock).

I do not know if you could drill and tap the 8mm rods to a 9mm bolt...this may be possible...then again read my first paragraph about why you may want more strength and you may decide that it's not worth it.

Hope this helps.

You really cannot drill out the 8mm diameter bolt to 9mm. The hole is offset towards the bearing shell so the new 9mm hole would also have to be offset relative to the 8mm hole. This is difficult to accomplish unless a milling machine is used. Besides, here is not much material in this part of the 8mm rods. You would creating a reliability concern and not fixing one. The 9mm rods were re-designed to have more steel in this area. Nissan knew what they were doing when they changed from 8mm to 9mm bolts.
