gvincent
I have searched the threads and seen the expensive pully set-ups and the set-up from Bowers etc. but they all show the power steering pump in place as well, Some of the older posts I searched have bad links to members pictures. I would like to know how to save my perfectly good working late 1978 air conditioning? When I swap in the LT1 what A/C parts I should keep from the Camaro and what do I keep from the Z? If the GM compressor is kept and is mounted high on the drivers side what do I use to plumb the A/C lines over to the existing A/C lines which are on the passenger side? Do I need the tank with the sight glass? How has one done this cheaply using junk yard parts and slight modifications to brackets etc. I am using the JTR mounts. I need pictures and parts, I got to have my A/C!!
love-my-V8-280Z
I just posted photos of my LT1 with the A/C monted high and on the Drivers side. Look in the history, if you cant find it,, email me and I can send you a pic
LT280z
post the pics please!!!! I need to figure out how to set it up also. Texas is way too hot not to have A/C. Any pics would be appreciated.
Jeff
Here is the thread where love-my-V8-280Z posted a pic of his setup. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=109427 What bracket and pulley's were used for this?
gvincent
Jeff, I read that thread awhile ago. Love-my V8-280Z stated that "I found I could not not install my LT1 with the A/C installed because it hit the frame rail. I'm not sure if just a pulley would hit or not. I think it would." So I dsimissed that picture as not working, Later on in that thread Bartman shows a Bowers setup but he doesn't say if it works or not either, it is the same picture as on the Bowers web site. Then Wheelman shows his setup but it has no A/C??? Then the rest of the thread discusses the Alternator but no more about A/C?? Does someone actually have working A/C with an LT1 installed and running? What 280Z A/C parts do I keep? What do I need to mate to the GM compressor? VRJoe
The second picture shows the A/C compressor mounted over the drivers side valve cover (it's yellow, so look closely). This is the mount I designed and shared with Terry (love-my-V8-280Z). He refined it some and used it on his LT1. I found a mounting bracket from a Pontiac that mounted to the LT1 head with a little modification. Terry made his brackets from scratch. I made plates to support the pulleys so the belt would wrap under the water pump using some custom pulleys. Terry pretty much duplicated my plates but was able to find and use some standard pulleys. I have tracings of the plates and I think Terry should have the pulley numbers he used. We both used the original LT1 compressor. It takes a little work, but it's well worth it. I can probably find the instructions I sent to Terry and send them to you if you want. The hardest part is making the measurements and making the spacers. I'll bet if you ask Terry real nice he might even have the measurements he used. - Joe
gvincent
Thanks for the offer Joe, I will definately take any info you are willing to send me. Mounting bracket from a Pontiac? year, model, etc.?? Terry, Please if you read or are following this post and smiling right now might I bother you to send me your measurments on your setup? My email is Gvincent@cdaconsultants.com This forum is awesome!! Thanks guys for sharing this information.
love-my-V8-280Z
I do not have any measurements. I have some photos of how I traced out the needed plates from paneling, than after refining the wood I traced it onto steel. My comments about the A/C hitting the frame rail were regarding the A/C in its stock position. I do not have the easy answer to moving the A/C, I can only tell you how to trace and copy it yourself. VRJoe
I'll try to get it together and email you in the next few days, life's a little busy right now. I made my plates out of 1/4" aluminum, Terry made his out of steel (3/16" I think, but he'll correct me if I'm wrong). - Joe

Allthough the Bower's kit doesn't sound cheap, it's actually a pretty good deal for everything that's included.

gvincent
I just searched my emails back to 2006 and couldn't find any info that either Joe or Terry sent may or may not of sent me. Sorry. I did end up making my own pulley set up to delete the AC and PS pump with male and female pulleys I scrounged out of a junkyard, I took the pulleys and the bolts and then took a plate of steel cut it and drilled it to bolt up the pulleys where they would work and clear each other. I bolted the plate to the LT1 Accessory bracket. I removed the power steering pump. I haven't done the AC yet and may not do it for awhile. I currently just pulled my engine and tranny out because of a knocking noise, I will be removing my pulley assembly off this motor and onto another LT1, I can take pictures and measurements then if your interested in just the AC and PS pump removal pulley system Greg hey is there any way you could send me the a/c bracket info u recieved from the guys. thanks jj jjjones1969@msn.com[ quote=gvincent;635677]Thanks Joe and Terry for your generous offer to send information.
