Ca Smog???

Besides measuring the levels of noxious fumes rolling out of our tailpipes, the smog technician also performs a visual inspection. He's checking for aftermarket parts that might be bypassing or altering pollution controls, like oxygen sensors or catalytic converters. As long as the performance accessories do not alter these smog-controlling systems, then you're in the clear.

as far as im concerned headers dont alter the smog controling systems right? my headers have the emissions hole like the sensor and stuff so it shoudl be fine. is the premuffler built into the old headers though? or is it a seperate thing like

old headers---->premuffler---->muffler

or

old headers/premuffler---->muffler

im saying can i add my headers and still have the premuffler attached? cuz i think its going to be too loud if i have headers straight to a flowmaster

I'd also make sure to get a PRE-TEST instead of a test. If you fail a pre-test no harm no foul. If you fail the actual test and you're a gross polluter then you have to smog every year afterwards instead of every 2. Real PITA.

Frankly I think if you get a smog tech with 1/2 a brain he'll fail you on the header.

Not in CA. I've had many cars fail a test with no issue afterwards.

Also bends1088: Although this is the rule of thumb many smog techs use, they'll have thier license permanently removed for purposly passing ANY aftermarket part without a carb nubmer. Trust me, headers are supposed to have carb numbers for CA, just go look at summit and you'll find that all the CARB legal headers have CARB numbers.

I'm not saying your wrong, becuase like I said many smog techs will let it go and just see if it passes. I'm just stating what the law is so that people don't get confused and think thier parts are actually legal.

I didn't mean that the car just fails. Fails as a gross polluter is different. Do that and you'll be bummed, because when that happens then you DO have to smog every year for a long time (forever?).

What determines gross polluter? I can't honestly remember. I moved from CA about 5 years ago, and it's not like I was a smog tech. I know that things like not having a cat or not having the smog equipment working correctly will get you closer to that classification, and after having a few friends get gross polluted I ALWAYS got a pre-test first, every time.

I believe the term "gross polluter" is something like 5x over max on anything (wich can happen easily if your air/fuel is off enough).

Sorry I misread that you meant 'gross polluters'.

I figured you'd know better ;)

No harm no foul.
