okiedad
Hi guys, Its been a couple of years and a couple of back surgeries since I wrote about my project with my son, but we're finally gettin there So I decided to download some pics of our progress on the 1970 240 z. It was going to be my son's car during high school and we both worked on it as he went to school. however I hurt my back and the project was delayed for a couple of years Now he is going to OSU and he needed a more "economical" car to travel back and forth so I "bought" our project from him so he could buy a new car. We built a new 2x3 frame with a cage connecting to the stock front suspension with modified front struts using a coilover kit from Afco. the 240z has a sbc with a 6-71 blower using an old style manifold and dual 4 bbl carbs fueled by a holley blue pump and fuel cell. It is connected to a th350 that has a manual valve body connected to a custom driveshaft from S&W with 1350 u joints and a billet yoke purchased on ebay from a NASCAR. The narrowed ford 9" handles the power with a 4 link rear suspension and coilovers. with wheelie bars in waiting if needed! I took it out of the garage to take pictures before I paint it (and because the wife doesn't like me to start it in the garage because it knock the pictures off the walls!) We have grafted and modified a cowl scoop from a Camaro to the stock hood. we removed the drip rails, and the side markers, and sail panel vents by hammerwelding in metal replacement pieces. we altered the rear fender to allow for the mickey thompson meats and have also modified the rear of the car with a steel panel and 4" tubing, welding and hammering the radius to create the corvette looking rear taillight assy. We then gave it a layer of fiberglass and a skim coat of filler to smooth the surface. The interior is spartan as we cut out the floor to make way for the custom chassis and floor. I created a custom carbon fiber dash by first creating a mold from MDF then stretching fleece over it, giving it a coat of resin to stiffen it up then laying the carbon fiber weave over the hardened mold and covering it with another layer of resin. It actually looks good. We used poly bucket seats and racing harnesses from Summit and the steering is a tilt wheel from a chevy astro van I had connected to the painless wiring harness. I now plan on painting it black basecoat with lazili blue pearl and clearcoat from HOK. I want to say thanks to everyone on hybridz for unknowingly providing the inspiration to keep working on the project as I can only work for a few hours at a time so it is reading the forums and it is seeing all the great work everyone has accomplished that keeps me going! DavyZ
Pretty stunning car! I'm amazed at the size of those 6-71 blowers! They look better than the more wimpy ones for the 'street.' Please let us know when you get some time slips You should be proud. Now how much $$$$ will it take for your son to buy it back when finished?? COZY Z COLE
I'm always happy to see another Z car with forced induction. Let's see a video of that in action. Here's a shot of my 'wimpy" 144 in comparison to the 6-71 blower.... LARRY
okiedad
My son just wants to be the first to take it down the strip. I figure he deserves that after all the help. My youngest 15 year old son is already asking to use it for his driving test....
boodlefoof
I wonder what the driving instructor would think?

dr_hunt
I wonder what the driving instructor would think? Yeah, I dare you to take that to the driving test. In fact I double dare you!!! Oh, and take vid so we can see the instructor crap their pants!
LS2 V8 Miata
Always enjoyed driving Blown big blocks on the street, even though not very practical, WHO CARES!!! Even though the "Viagra Rat" Vette is 512 CI 1000 HP big block it did better on pump gas than the 383 SBC Cobra. We live in the mountains a little town of about 27K and 15 gallons would barely take you cross-town once, jumping on it a couple of times and coasting on vapors into the local Exxon. Worth every drop! PS You might be able to tell by looking at me, there have been a few years pass between these pictures and my V8 Z-car days were way before the Cobra! I may be older, but I refuse to grow up!
Lason
What size rear tires are those?
veritech-z
Okiedad, I think you have a great car there. I'm a die hard turbo guy, but there is just something about a big blower sticking through the hood of something that you can't beat! Nice stance on that thing too, you and your son are doing a great job! Ls2v8miata, you just became my new hero! (sorry JnJ!-you guys are still my fishing heroes though! although Doc Hunt's fishing buddy is starting to edge you guys out...) I think that might be the best vette I've ever seen, even if it is yellow!
LS2 V8 Miata
Rat's rear wheels are 15 X 10s. Slicks cause wheelies and front suspension damage (coming down hard), so what-ever's available for long smoky burn-out fun is what usually winds up on the back, Old BFGs I think when picture was taken. Turbo Meister
Okiedad, that Z looks great even though you had to cut a hole in the hood. I'm anxious to hear how fast it will run. It's nice to see more and more interest in blowers and turbos on V8's. Good luck. Hanns
dr_hunt
It's really a nice looking project. In looking at the pic from the back it looks as though the rear shocks and springs could have been mounted closer to the tires. Was there a reason for putting them so close to the center and do you think that may cause stability problems at high speed?
BillZ260
Very Cool OkieDad! Nice to see another Hybrid so close. Maybe we can work out a meet and greet when I get mine rolling What color you going to paint it?
okiedad
24" was not a whole lot of room between the frame rails when you have to stuff coilovers sway bar, 4 link suspension and enough room for the tires. seriously.. The current Mickey Thompsons are 29x15.5x15 the room is there for the drag slicks (32x14x15).
okiedad
I want to paint it black with a HOK blue pearl truflame job using the new templates and dvd kit from Mike Lavalle. The Cage is currently blue with blue harnesses from RJS and summit poly seats with the blue inserts
