S&W 8 point cage install

Recommended Posts

I have FINALLY finished my cage. In reading the previous post (how to build a cage), I must admit that buying the complete kit from S&W was probably a waste. The only thing that remained 'as delivered' was the main hoop. EVERYTHING else had to be modified, customized. Certainly this could be specific to my case, but the rest of the cage was not difficult to do from scratch. I would think that for the 2+2 if you could order just the hoop from S&W, and get the rest of the tubing locally, you would be set.

I did all the cutting and shaping with my little 4" grinder (with a cutting disk obviously). If you have, or have access to, a bench mounted cutoff wheel and a tubing cutter, you could do the cage in about 1/4 of the time it took me. Getting nice straight angled cuts and round tube butt cuts are very time consuming without these tools, but obviously very possible.

But man, I am so stoked to have my cage in icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_cool.gificon_cool.gif

Hey Tim. Looks like you had to put in some overtime to work your roll cage in there. I know it came out very clean. Can't wait to see your pics. Our Z is starting to look presentable now. Gabe isn't as shy showing his car to his buddies now. He is driving it more and more now, but it still needs work. Much improved since the first day we got it. Thanks for your help. He wanted me to tell you thanks and sends his greetings. I'll be getting him a used computer soon so he can join in on the forums. twak.gif J&G

Congrats Tim, I can't wait to see them.

I bought the S&W kit, but had the body guy weld it in. He did alot better job than I could have. The way I had it put in, (hoop between the inner wheel houses, up on the raised floor behind the seat) the guy even had to take a section out of the main hoop! He used a smaller piece of tubing slid into the hoop to hold it together, and then but welded it together. Not the best, but it's not going anywhere. All the other tubes had to be trimmed as well. But no tubing bender was needed, so in all it saved me money. I only paid $200 to have it put in - not bad.

Owen, I hope that those boxes of Bud were still full and that you didn't polish them off before the install of the cell!!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Owen,

What are you saying....I'm FAT, or maybe PHAT?!?!!?

I fit in it great, but I am very used to the snugness of racing seats. Hell it beats the standard skateboard type 240Z seats icon_biggrin.gif

I am just glad I could get the seats to fit between the tunnel and door brace
