Pete84
I've used the search function and it hasn't turned up much at all. . . so What sort of highway mileage do Z31's get? There are a good many for sale not to far away, the SF bay area - 3-4 hours away, and the prospect of getting a 5spd NA 2+2 and ending up with a turbo'ed engine seems quite reasonable after looking at a number of the how to's. With a boost controller, intake, exhaust, and possibly a FMIC how would a 9:1 turbo engine do on the highway? almost all my driving is there, and well, I do enough that it needs to be pretty good. typhoone
i seen claims of up to 26 mpg, but i don't know how modded they were. i think even with a heavy foot you would be able to pull out at least 20 mpg, and if you were conservative around
Pete84
With the boost lowered when not needed with a boost controller, would oversized injectors still bring down mileage?
typhoone
we are controlled by ecu, and it tells the injectors how much to put in, so I doubt it would have an effect as long as you had a good tune to make the ecu work with the new injectors
Comrade_Charlie
I get crap for mpg(I think)... probaly old O2 sensor, old maf... 10 more or less pounds of boost and city driving... thats all I can say. probaly 17-20...
premo-s12
in my S12 i get around 16-18 in the city and on a good day about 24 on the highway. this is socal tho so people tend to haul ass on the freeway and ive got a bit of a lead foot in the 'ol 200, so that im sure doesnt help either
300zxt
I get 20mpg out of my 88 Turbo and that's during lead footed highway driving, it would be even less if I wasn't speeding
mtcookson
In my Maxima (with a VG30ET) I've got up to 29.5 mpg on the highway with a bad intake, bad exhaust, and a terrible tune and as low as about 14 mpg in town. Its fwd though so I'm sure that makes a good bit of difference.
Comrade_Charlie
ive ridden my car really easy for about a 40mile trip and it got good mpg then but I was going dawg slow...
Pete84
What is the rear diff ratio on turbo and non-turbo cars? 3.73s or higher?
NissanSportMag(Z31)
84-87 NA = 3.7:1 open 88-89 NA = 3.9:1 open 84-86 T = 3.54:1 open 87-89 T = 3.7:1 clutch LSD * (before 04/87, these were open diffs) 88SS = 3.7:1 viscous LSD Actual mileage will vary depending on your tunes. Last I talked with him, Jason (redz31.com) still gets over 20mpg on the freeway.
Sparks280zt
I get 24 on the highway and 21 around town with a new o2 sensor.
SonOfZZZap
well Ive had my 84 Z31T for about two weeks... I KNOW it needs a tuneup and what not, still runs great dispite it being cold natured like all other older nissans heh. with a heavy foot im getting 18-20mpg as far as I can tell, when Im just cruising maybe low 20's. Boost is too much fun

I actually got ~20% better milage on AZ gas than CA when I went on a trip this winter, 25->30. Lucky guys
ZDrifter
HaHa funny thing was that was on my trip down from Oregon and that 30mpg was on a mix of Oregon and Cali gas. Dont know what I get down here yet.
ZR8ED
I have gotten into the high 20's on the highway. I'm sure if I kept it just under the limit, with smaller less sticky tires, no flares I could break into the low 30's. I have an adjustable piggyback ecu, and I could lean it as much as I want for strict highway mileage, so I assume it could do even better if I like. What diff do you have? Very impressive milage!!
NissanSportMag(Z31)
My old 84NA manual gets 22-24 in the city and 27-29 on the freeway. My 84T manual gets 18-20 in the city (heavy right foot) and 25-27 on the freeway. My 88NA auto gets 20-22 in the city and 27-29 on the freeway. A properly tuned Z31 will get nice numbers. Keep them in check.
Pete84
Not to be too n00bish, but what is done exactly in a "proper tune"? Plugs, cap, wires, fuel filter, oil change? A/F tuning? How far do you have to go to get that?
