Unemployment Insurance: what a crock of $hite (rant)

So I'm a 3rd year machinest and just started my last 2 month training session. Assuming I pass, I can write the trade exam and I will be a 'real' general machinest. It's not going to make me rich, but it's a decent paying trade and fairly respected. Now.. here in Canaduh, under certain circumstances (sp?) you are eligible for 'Unemployment benifits' when you for example, get laid off, or if you work seasonal, ect. In my case, I'm in a registered training apprentiship program and therefore get laid off work for my 2 month's of school. Now, the first problem is they will only give you 55% of your normal wages. Yah, you are expected to live on HALF of what you're used to. On top of that, there is a 2 week waiting period before you are eligible. THEN (this is the kicker) I get a letter saying that because I took my vacation pay (4% held off every pay I believe) along with my last week's pay, that gets taken off my unemployment benifits, once I am eligible. It's great to be lumped into the same group as drug addicts, alcoholics, and people with gambling problems that can't hold a job and ussually don't even care too...

Basicaly, it works out like this; I still have to wait TWO more weeks now (I've already been in school for 2 weeks) until I see any $$$. I don't have any savings left, and am close to maxing my credit card. X-mass hurt a bit, and I never really recovered, cause I started school. I can't pay the gas or hydro, and if I miss 2 morgage payments, I'm in danger of loosing my house. Actually, I don't know how I'm going to put gas in my truck this week..

It boils down to this; I'm trying to better myself. I am a law abiding guy, I'm doing everything by the book and the way you're suposed to, and I could end up going bankrupt, loosing my house, and destroying my credit... because I went to school. :x

Sorry, just had to rant...

Thanks.. but really, there's not much I can do except borrow money to survive the next 1.5 months. I have a job to go back too (and in reality, I could probly get better $$$ after I finish school) but I can't even work legaly right now, because I'm in the system as 'unemployed'. I really hate going to the 'bank of my mother' cause even though it's 0% intrest, I DO have to pay it back somehow... I guess I'm gona start trying too sell off some stuff.. I was hoping to get something newer, but it looks like I might sell the truck just to pay bills ,and buy an old beater ($500 junker or something) for now.. I'm FINALY getting a motor for my RX7 (been waiting for over 6 months for this guy..) but don't have the $$$ flow to put it in and finish the stupid car, so that's not even worth trying to sell right now.. I've toy'd with the thought of selling the Z, but it's in a bad state of repair too, and really, I'd loose my shirt on it..

Heck, I need someone to machine parts on it anyways, so I guess I'd just go seek out your help when I need that done.

PM me if you want to work something out, I have some money I can give up in hopes of getting another "un damaged" chassis.

Nah, you can do some jobs for cash and just declare the extra income on your taxes at the end of the year. I HAD to do work on the side when my wife & I had our first kid, in escrow on our first house, and I get laid off. I know what it's like and I wish you well. You gotta do what you gotta do to provide for your family. Having a fire sale may or may not help you much....and you'll be out of the cars...

Just my $02.

Well, I can tell you this (and I don't mean anything personal by it). The Unemployment Insurance here in New Mexico, USA, is just as bad if not worse. When I was laid off a few years ago, I received a MAXIMUM of $276/week, minus taxes. There is also a waiting period here, and the application process is nearly useless (horrible website that is down most of the time). That is not even close to 55% of a small salary. It is a complete crock of crap!

My GF was forced (coersced) to resign from her job in Nov, a few days before her 1 year probationary period was up. This was a state job, at a state run hospital. She never had a negative comment from any co-workers or her boss, great reviews, etc. Well, she was told that she would be fired (not laid off mind you) if she did not resign, and that it would go into her file and look bad for future employers. So she hand wrote a resignation letter on the spot, definitely not something would have done normally. Guess what, she was now NOT eligible and has not been able to collect UI. She has two kids (previous relationship) to take care of, plus all the normal bills. Absolutely rediculous!

The system really is worthless! The honest person needing assistance between jobs gets completely screwed, even if they are doing everything they can to work. I feel for you! Good luck, and hang in there, you will be done with school in no time, and it will be worth it.

that's definately something we have a lot of here too.

I'm sure like any part of america, certain people who want to make a cheap living and are fine with it decide to take crappy jobs of people who hand out licenses to friends to help them out, and thats where bad work gets done by other people who are not nearly as well trained as you are, but dont mind working for half what you did.

that's one thing that pisses me off, but I chose to stick it out and just decide to do everything on my own, and try my hand at as many other things I can do, while working a slow daily grind at some other place to keep me runnin.

My brother went on UI and he had to go to this stupid monthly meeting, and he didn't get his first cheque for 5 weeks, and it was miniscule at best.

So he trudged for the summer, playing world of warcraft, and rationing off gas money to take himself and his girlfriend out.

Look on the bright side of things, DL.

If i can add anything that will make you feel better, it's that I didn't have a job for 16 months. I quit it to finish school, and ended up taking a loan out of OCAD for a small amount. I had no credit cards, or no credit for that matter, and I still don't. I had bills to pay, and I had absolutely nothing to my name, after spending all of the money on print outs for school projects. They became more and more intense, and better than most of what everyone else was churning out, so they cost me ALOT of money to pull of. I am still paying that loan back.

I had got into a scuffle with the parents, and I left on an impulse (literally 3 minute decision), and I'm now living with a friend. I stayed here for 2 weeks without talking to any of my immediate family. even my OTHER relatives knew i was out and about, but my parents had only begun to feel the reaction of the hearsay from random people who know me or call at the house for me, "wondering if he's around" to see what they would say.

fast forward form october to january, I've now been working a job since november, making enough money to buy tools and have fun on the side, with debts still creepin. I get two paycheques a month, and the first one goes to my debts and my monthly fees, and the second goes to bank.

I would have never thought it would happen this way, and now my parents are talking to me, and we're actually closer than we were before. THIS, IN JUST LESS than 5 months. My family was miserable for as long as I can remember. I guess removing me from the equation made them happy that I wasn't around.

So one final thing I'll say that has always inspired me, and the words I live by ever since this whole thing happened:

"When oppurtunity knocks, answer the damn door"

I added the "damn", because it reminds me of how long I HAVE waited on things that could have been done at a better time, and would have saved me a lot of anguish and slacking. Hopefully you get the same use out of this saying as I do. Like I said, we're not too far from eachother, so just gimme a holler if theres something you need, man!

Heh heh heh... never rains, it pours.. well, here it snows now.. :x Speaking of snow and ice.. I'm franticaly trying to put something together to cover the front of my garage.. Used (free) 2x4 lumber and scraps of plywood.. like a small extention into the driveway. In the back, I have a portable (metal frame, tarp cover) garage, right on the back of the house garage. (I put barn style doors in the back for access) It's frozen solid to the ground, and slowly geting crushed by the weight of snow/ice. ANYway, I have my old RX7 back there, waiting for a motor I SHOULD have had (and have paid for!) 5 months ago. The guy FINALY gets ahold of me last week, and sayid it will be ready this week. I went to see it, and it looks like it's about ready. (BTW, the motor may be for sale soon.. older 350 4 bolt main, .040 over, heavy duty internals and oil pump shaft, relieved flat tops, short water pump, all new gaskets/bearings/chain+gears, freshened heads, and a comp cam.. can't remember the specs.) I havn't done anythig else with the car, cause I couldn't justify spending $$$ on it.. not really a priority right now, just something I'd get to whenever right?

Well, at this point (I discovered this last night) the roof at the right rear (the tarp) is saging down in between the metal rafters, full of snow and ice. Huge. I'm talking probly 300 lbs of SOLID ice and some snow, and the tarp is at the breaking point. Did I mention this ball of ice is DIRECTLY over the rear glass and quarter panel/tail light area?!?!?!?!? I put some plywood and a few tires on the car to hopefully deflect the impending doom, but I'm not hopefull... So unless I can wip something up really quick (and free, cause I'm broke remember), I get to sit back and watch my car get crushed. Welcom to the winter of my discontent..

Use lots of pillows, blankets... anything soft... layered several inches thick evenly over the area you expect it to hit... then a place a full sheet of 4x8 1/2 inch plywood over that. Then melt the ice draining it through a small hole. Nail the plywood to the roof over the hole and put the tarp over that. You can probably find a sheet of damaged 4x8 plywood for cheap.

Well, it got worse.. but it's a little better now.. We had more snow, a slight melt and then more cold.. So the 'mass of ice' is now probly 4-500 lbs and the metal frame work is actually starting to buckle. :x

I ditched school this afternoon and went to town on the garage/re-organizing project, and have 3 walls standing (real framing, 2x4's and plywood) in front of the garage door (at the front, in the driveway) so as soon as this guy brings the rx7's motor over, I'll wall it up, shove the Z into the 'alcove' I built, and roll the RX7 into the real garage nose to nose with the Z. I managed to move it forward about 1.5 feet today by prying it with a 1" square tube I had kicking around. Jamed it into the dirt on a 45* and pulled like a fool on the X-member... I think I bugered my back a little, but I'm in better shape than the piece of steel.. little bugger is bent on quite an angle now! :icon10: Hopefully I will get the damn motor tonite, cause I currently have the back barn doors open a bit (wont close cause of the RX7 being there now..) and it's suposed to get really friggin cold for the next few days...

I know it's debt, but do you qualify for a Canada Student Loan? Interest free until youre out of school.

Welfare and UI are a scam. Best if you just consider it a donation.

- Greg -

In fact, UI is a "donation" from your employers. In Texas at least, employers must not only fund the UI fund but my pay back the fund for any money's that ex-workers receive. Thank your ex-employer.

Malcom X said " Welfare was just another form of slavery." Thank LBJ and the "Great Society" for that.

Enough!
