Wheelie Bars need opinion....

Recommended Posts

Alright fellow Hybrid Z’ers,

This is probably a stupid question. I have searched the forum ( I searched for wheelie bars .) and can only find write ups on stock IRS Suspension can not lift the front wheels off the ground / Drag racing. Well I think we have proven that is false. We have all stock suspension, we did weld the unit to be Posi, and have recently upgraded to CV joints and are using Modern Motor Sports CV adapters other than that Yes it is stock Z suspension.

My question is this, I was contemplating the idea of installing a single or double wheelie bar on the Z car, and I am just not sure where to mount it? On a solid axle rear end, or course you mount the wheelie bar mounts on the axle tubes and go from there. Where would you mount them on a IRS suspension?

I was thinking since we do not run a rear bumper, I could fashion something to the rear where the bumper used to mount. Watching our last video www.jnjdragracing.com/videos/01202007-2.mpg from the track last Saturday, if we would have stayed on the throttle, I think it would have flipped over, maybe not. Maybe it would have rode out and sit back down, I am not sure.

Give me your ideas please…………..

If we do not mount some type of wheelie bar, I guess I will connect back up the retard button switch and just leave the line retarding the timing than as we roll out release it for full power, this is what we did when we were running stock u-joints.

The main reason I am asking is that I would like to give our hardest fullest run at SEZ#8, not having to hold back.

Thanks,

John

hope this helps...don't know the details on it though...

That looks like a solid rear axle. The problem is installing them on a car with IRS. I searched around and haven't found a good solution for IRS cars other than some VW specific stuff. I found a few posts with someone looking for wheelie bars for his Corvette, but it doesn't look like he ever found anything.

My first instinct would say to reinforce the mustache bar and brackets then mount a wheelie bar bracket to that and run a bar forward to the front diff crossmember.

Basically cradle the whole underside of the diff front to back with a stout frame bolted to the inner control arms bolts (upgrade the bolts) and the mustache bar mounts. Then attach the wheelie bar(s) to that frame.

From the bounce on landing, it looks like you could use heavier fron damping as well....although I am no pro to drag racing suspensions.
