eightytwoturbo
Well about a month ago I got my headgasket replaced at a shop, now its blown again and I was wondering if there is any helpful websites or links to getting this done... Im not what you would call "experienced" at motor work so I need all the help I can get. Its a 1982 280zx turbo, and I think the gasket the guy used is a fellpro... should I goto nissan for my next? My car is stock and I plan on it being stock for a long time.
Twoeightnine
I recently had a head gasket replaced on my 240SX. When I went to pick up the head I looked the block over for any cracks. Looked OK to me. Sent the head to the shop where it was skimmed to ensure that it was true. Had it pressure tested and valves checked. Had the engine reassembled with all new gaskets top and bottom. Ran like a top. Nice twin black stripes on the pavement when I test drove it. Made it about 50 miles and plow!! Out went the gasket again!! The shop says it's probably the block! WTF! She's parked now. Im thinking of getting a JDM motor and calling it good. Sound about right?
eightytwoturbo
Ouch that sucks, I feel the same way.. just want to sell it but I like the car too much so here I am trying to get some advice on how to do this heh
naviathan
Have the block and head checked to make sure they're true.
TimZ
Have the block and head checked to make sure they're true. Did you re-torque the head after a couple of heat cycles? The proper procedure for this has been gone over several times.

z-ya
There are a bunch of books on rebuilding an L6. Try searching Amazon, its easy.... http://www.amazon.com/Rebuilt-Your-Nissan-Datsun-Engine/dp/1931128030/sr=8-1/qid=1170729277/ref=sr_1_1/105-3636651-3391602?ie=UTF8&s=books BTW, Nissan L6 heads do not need to be retorqued after installation. Use a Nissan OEM gasket.
naviathan
If you don't mind spending a bit of money up front the HKS steel 1mm head gasket would be a good investment IMO.
eightytwoturbo
thanks I was able to find the rebuild book at walmart, also does the steel gasket change anything due to thickness, like timing etc?
atx_s130
just wondering did you push you engine like a race car driver in the first 100 miles ( this goes to the 240sx guy too) jsut like any other car part you gotta let the gasket set it and break in for at least 500 miles(thats my opinion ive been told 200 is enough but i play safe on head gaskets)
eightytwoturbo
I drove it for about a week to work like a grandma, I do not think that was the problem, I put well over 200 miles before WOT.
datsunlover
BTW, Nissan L6 heads do not need to be retorqued after installation. Use a Nissan OEM gasket. Uh... really? I re-torqued mine... Seamed that it needed it too..

Well about a month ago I got my headgasket replaced at a shop Was this the only thing replaced?
