stony
in an earlier post i said my car weighed 2850 lbs that was wrong... i forgot i had an extra diff (80lbs) and a big bag of parts (40lbs), plus i removed the entire heater/blower (under the dash) assy (40-50lbs) so im actually looking like 2700 + or - a few pounds. how much would a similar 240z weight??? bascially gutted with seats dash and cage and say a turbo L motor? Ive been seeing some weighing in in the 23-2400 lb range. with the same drivetrain would this be a substaintial increase in performance? would it be worth the time and effort to swap a low 11 sec rb26dett drivetrain to a 240z to get it into the tens??? stony
Guest jens
Why not put your car on a diet. Terrys page has the information. http://www.zhome.com/rnt/FordPower/Weights.html
CruxGNZ
If I remember right, every 100 lbs. you loose is a tenth of a second quicker in the quarter mile. Don't quote me on this though. !M!
blueovalz
Acceleration is just a small part of the picture in weight loss. The lighter car also handles better and stops better. Obviously a max-lean Z may not be practical for a daily driver, but it makes the car feel so much more nimble.
stony
wow using some of the calculators on the net if i lost 300-400 lbs i could shave over a 1/2 sec of my 1/4 time does this sound right? currently weighs 2700 with driver..... 1/4 in 11.138 @ 121mph = 380 rwhp drop weight down to 2400 and the calculator says my 1/4 mile time should improve to a 10.8 @ 125 mph!!!!! that is almost worth swapping to a 240 shell drop it down to 2200 and its at 10.5 129 mph!!!! and this is still on the stock rb26dett motor HP!!!! boy i wish i was somewhere that 240s were a little more available
Scottie-GNZ
According to my formula, 2400# will get you down to the low-1.70s at about 125.5. The lighter weight will give a quicker 60' and your drivetrain will live longer and love you for it. I can only dream of a 2400# weight. Guest Zpeed
damn, makes me wanna get a 240z.. instead of my heavy 76 260z
stony
well the car allready has a custom paint job that i dont want to mess with other wise fiberglass fenders headlights, hatch, doors would be an option. that right now is the only thing else i can see to remove weight. and i dont have the cage in yet. the interior consist of 2 stock seats. (could be changes) and a gutted dash so not much weight to be saved there. when ever i get to leave alaska i may try and pickup a 240 shell and swap everything over then convert to v-8 or stock L engine and sell the red 260z but thats a ways off. stony
looked at terry's page and that a perfect example of what im talking about. 2200 lbs!!!! if i could wack 500lbs of my z im thinking that would make a considerable difference. just think about how the family truckster performs when you add 3-4 extra people in the back... im thinking maybe a .5 sec gain in 1/4 mile times. Allthough for a .5 sec gain in my car i could dump some money into a new turbo setup and cams a get it i just like the sound of getting into the 10s on a stock engine with stock booste
stony
scottie is that resonable wieght for a 240? or am i getting bad info? i would hate to go out and get a 240 and find it not that much lighter then a
260DET
One thing to consider is that the 260 incorporates quite a few improvements that make it heavier. Eg, I think, stronger frame rails, front struts, rear axles. So the 260 IMHO is a better car if you are thinking of improving its performance, except perhaps for drag racing where the chassis improvements may not be important. One way to significantly reduce weight without reducing structural integrity is to use fibreglass panels eg bonnet (hood) and rear hatch, the latter incorporating a perspex (plexiglass) 'glass'. All the side glass can be replaced with perspex too.
Guest Anonymous
sorry i know im kinda late on this one but for anybody who needs the info... i weighed my 73 240 that had everything in it minus heater box and blower but add in a 400 watt amp - 10 lbs speaker box 15 lbs?./> and i believe my single 8" sub was in there about 15 lbs and the total on the scale came to 2380lbs! lighter than i thought it would be.. hope this helps someone! by the way this was on a scale that the Navy uses to measure weights of vehicals for people who are changing duty stations, so id say its fairly accurate due to the fact they pay you for the weight you move!!
