torsion bars?

has anybody or does anybody have torsion bars connection their trans to the rear end? I am putting my car together on paper right now, and this is very important to me.

I believe you're looking for someone using a torque tube, not a torsion bar. A torsion bar is a spring used in a lot of suspensions, from Porsches to pickup trucks, but it does not connect a trans to a rear end.

 

There was quite a bit of talk about torque tubes when I first showed up here, you might want to search the archives and see if you can dig up any of those old threads.

Could you be talking about an arm coming off the rear end and mounting to maybe a bushing on the trans crossmember? The 80's camaros had a setup like that i believe.

The LSx F body cars have torque arms also.

 

Great idea on a car with a solid rear axle. Can really work to dial in the suspension.

 

But I don't see the point of them on a car with an IRS.

 

Maybe somebody could educate me.

A torque arm would simply be a different way to skin the cat. If you use a more solid (AKA Ron Tyler Mount) diff mount setup, you'd be accomplishing the same thing as using a stock diff mount setup and torque arm. I don't think there is a whole lot of extra room under there, especially with dual exhaust to run a torque arm large enough to be effective.

3rd gen rx7 also has a setup like that. They had to have a reason to do it that way, because the arm weighed a lot.
