Stupid Race tire Q's

Recommended Posts

Generally used racing slicks have lost a lot of their stick. Racing slicks are generally good for about 5 heat cycles - 5 short track sessions, one long track session, 3 autocrosses, etc. After that, the rubber starts to harden up and they are no better than a regular set of street tires.

Sometimes you can bring them back to life for a another heat cycle using tire treatments like Formula 1. But be aware that some race tracks ban the stuff.

Using that logic Drag tires are only good for 5 weeks? or does this only apply to road racing tires I know several semipro drag guys who use a set of tires for 2 seasons with no real drop offs in 60' times please keep in mind I'm not dicounting your knowledge I'm just trying to understand this Keith

I had a good friend who used to run front Goodyear Eagles from a Winston cup car on his car. 26 10.5 I believe they were. They hooked up great ~ 11.0's on a 3500# Trans Am. I ran some too for awhile. They hooked up fine on my low powered car (13.40's) and they have NONE of the "wiggle" that drag race tires do.

My dad used to use old dirt track tires that he would soak insome chemical similar to what they spray on the track at the strip. They hooked up really well on his 56 ford p'up running 10.40's.

This talk of rejuvinating tires is interesting. The Micheln Pilot MXX3s on my Z are probably 5-6 years old, but have little wear. I need to get a durometer, but a road racing buddy stuck his fingernail in them and said "they're ROCKS". Mike Kelly said the same thing.

What's the deal with this "Formula 1" stuff? Will it ruin the tires (make them wear out quicker, or something)? Does it work?

Anybody with experience with this stuff, I'd like some opinions.

Thanks,

I have a buddy using used asphault circle track slicks on his 70's ford pickup. He says they hook up well if he gets them hot enough. His burnout is about twice as long as it was with the drag slicks.
