17's w/ coil overs

Recommended Posts

Sorry - No pics - Not at home right now. My 240 runs 01 maxima 17x7 with 225/45/17 tires. No clearance problems with GC coilovers. Spring rate 200F/225R - a little stiff for my liking but good on the track. Struts sectioned 1.5". Front hub is Z31 five lug with .20' spacer. Rear is re-drilled stubs to 5 on 4.5 and bolt-on 1.7" custom spacer. I run a 245/50/16 Nitto DR on Z32 16x7.5 rims which also fit. ;) The springs on my coilovers are 10' free length and have good clearance on these rims.

Ed,

Go to the folloewing site www.hdfphotography.photoreflect.com, then down at the bottom you will see listing of several autocross events. Start from the top & click on the event, then open up number 02 & you will see my 280Z w. coilovers & 17 Boyd Codington's in action. I beleive the July Stead event has a number of photos, including one's of the car in the parking lot.

Sorry, not literate enouph to post the photos on the site?

I've got 17s on my car. Honestly, I think 16s would be a smarter choice. Herrassy? Well, 17s with a decent series rubber on them RAISE the car up even if you lower it with the tires up in the wheelwell. IMO the car looks a little odd. I can shoot some shots of my car and give you the height if that would help. If your brakes will fit inside 16s consider them. I had 15s on my car previously and it looked REAL low now it just sits a bit higher - I suppose I could've used 35 series rubber but....

My 240 runs 17x7 and 225/45/17 front and rear. That is the widest that you can put on a 7" rim if you go by the tire co's specs for rim width. I think you could squeeze 235/45/17 on a 7" by the looks of my tires. I would echo what BLKMGK says though - It does raise the car twak.gif not my intended effect - I am going to go to 16" rims for track tires next year. 2thumbs.gif

Note, this is my OPINION.

I wouldn't run 17s unless I was trying to fit 275s (N/A for 16s 15s 14s). I mean, what good is it doing you to run 225 17s? Higher c.g., greater unsprung mass, greater polar moment of inertia, taller overall gearing, reduced braking gs/pedal effort relative to 225/50-15s. I run 225/50ZR14 Hoosiers at the track, and 225/50ZR15 B'stone S03s on the street. Only reason I'd go taller would be to fit wider tires.

I know 225/45-16s require bending the fender lip back on a '72 lowered a bit more than mine (~2.5-3"). 225/50-15s fit with minor rubbing at the stock fender lip on my 1971 car, lowered ~1-1.5". 225/50-16s *might* fit on a moderately lowered car with the fender lip rolled back.

I'm running 225X50X16 Bridgestone -03s on my 16X8 wheels (front and rear)I had to roll the back lip on my 72, to stop them from hitting in a dip in the road. I have GC coil-overs and a ride height of 5" front and 5 1/4 rear (measured at the rocker lip)Springs are 200 front/225 rear. On a real hard compression (transition from NHIS NASCAR oval to road course) the rears hit with the 16X8s. Either I go to 7", flares, or bigger springs.

This is all offset dependent. I have 225/50/16's on 7 inch rims and the car is a little lower then standard. About 1 inch. It looks to me that I can fit 245/45/16's easy. I would need to go wider on the rims to do so but there is room. Mine is a 76 260 2+2. Mabye they have a little more room in the guards, allthough i have never heard this.

What's a much much better tire than a Bridgestone S03, BFG KD, Pirelli PZero, or Dunlop SP9000? Several max performance tires available in 225/50-15 these days. Michelin Pilot Sport is the only tire of note available in 16 and 17" sizes but not 15". It was outperformed by the S03 in wet and dry conditions in a Tire Rack test. Also, how do you figure it's cheaper to go 17"? 16" tires will save you about $50 vs. 17s, and 15s are $70 to $100 cheaper than 16s. 4x225/45ZR17 S03s = $620, 16"ers $564, and 15"ers would be $492. For KDs, that'd be $780 for 17s, $752 for 16s, and $648 for 15s (yes, I *should* be working right now).

Oh yeah, in my previous post I mentioned 225/45-16s on a '72, they were really 225/50-16s. Nice to have ye aboard, 3L240!
