ianz
Hello everyone, has anyone converted their 240 to an R180 with CV half shafts?? if so what was involved?? I have yet to blow up an R180 but the u-joints have got to go!!
Mike C
If you are not breaking the R180, you shouldn't be breaking U-joints, either. All of the CV conversions that I have seen done were done when switching to an R200 diff, then using the 82-83 2+2 or turbo halfshafts. The turbo/2+2 flanges will work with the 280 stubs but if you want the stronger 280 stubs you will need Ross C (modernmotorsports.com) 280 stub CV companion flanges. Guest Anonymous
Welcome Ian Z, Mike is right on... When you get the R200 cv joints, do yourself a favor and pick up the R200 diff and the moustache bar. will not cost much more or get some of those lifetime non grease zert ujoints and run em hard.. zcarnut
I've thought about this as well, Ian. I know that Nissan built some 280ZX's with CV axles and the R180, and I've seen the early Maxima's with the same set up. The Maxima's would have a 3.70 ratio. Maybe all you may have to do is to change the companion flange on the 240Z stub axle.(?)
johnc
CVs on an R180 will probably only add weight - 50% of it is unsprung too.
ianz
Thanks for the replies guys.... The issue is really one of necessity.... I'm looking to build a turbo street car in the future and decided to use a late model 280 zx 5 speed coupled to a 4.11 R180 out of a 200sx since both these items are abundant in the junk yards. The problem is the 200sx diff has CV half shafts and no provision for the ujoint flange stub axles to screw in as they do on my 240 R180 I don't need/want the extra 25 lbs in the back of the car from the R200 and I may want to use a Quafe (sp??) so I want to stick with the R180 PS, hey John, you lookin to sell your extra Quafe? johnc
No, the two I have are built up in rebuilt R180s with 3.70 and 4.11 gears. I'm still looking for a 115mm 3.90 ring and pinion to finish out my gearing choices.
Mike C
If you want to do a turbo motor you don't want 4.11. The 3.54 are a much better choice and depending on how fast you get, the 3.36 may be even better. Even the 3.70 are a stretch for the modified L28t.
