Can anyone recommend a QUALITY jackstand?

My dad just picked up some Sears Craftsman 2 ton jackstands and...wow...they are pieces of crap. The welds are rough, there's burn-through, and the less said about the paint, the better! Made in China, of course. Didn't Craftsman used to mean quality?

Anybody know where I can get some decent 2-3 ton jackstands? I know some of you were raving about 24,000 lb jackstands a while back, but my jack probably doesn't go up that high and not even my 2+2 weighs that much. :P

the 12 ton are the way to go , they are far sturdier, and less likely to tip, on the lowest notch they are about the correct height to work under the car and the base measurements are significantly wider and harder to tip over

you may not need the weight rateing but it won,t hurt a thing to have an extra margin of safety

all the 2,3,5,6 ton jack stands Ive seen in the last 35 years are shodily made or significantly smaller and easy to tip, and you don,t want to be bench pressing a car suddenly when one of those P.O.S. tips or fails while your under it

BTW,the 12 ton jacks give the clearance for an extra mechanics pad and a mechanics creeper

they do make a 6 ton version, and its far better than your average auto parts store crappy 3 ton stands

a 3 ton next to a couple 12 ton

these are made to YOUR specs if you want them custom

keep in mind if youve got a spare weekend and some scrap steel, and a welder, ........or a few hundred dollars worth of alluminum or steel and a decent welder , you can build a fantastic set of heavy duty ramps

welders may seem expensive, but they rapidly pay for themselfs, yeah! I know, you don,t have the cash, well I didn,t either, but I sold some engine parts and did odd repairs and put a part of the cost on plastic, Ive easily saved far more than the welders cost over the years in repairs and building custom parts ETC.

at times you can sit down, design something and price out the steel or aluminum and find you can easily save 50%-70% on projects

I love how someone asks for "quality" and harbor freight pops up... hehe. I personally have some "cheap" Gm Goodwrench ones that have held my 47 dually for about a year now with NO problems. Clean welds, NICE black and red powdercoat (or super thick paint, not sure)... but they were only like 30 bucks or so. I can't complain.

iF youve ever checked OUT those 12 ton jack stands closely youll soon see that those are a HUGE EXCEPTION to the normal CRAPPY HF stuff, probably because STEEL, and HEAVY CASTINGS are fairly cheap to produce and the TECHNOLOGY is VERY OLD and EASY TO PRODUCE in CHINA at a VERY reasonable cost

which do you think is a better deal, (4) 8 ton jack stands for $800 with only 3 heights

or (4) 12 ton jack stands for under $140 68LBS FOR TWO (thats a good bit of steel) with about 8 height choices and a far stronger locking mechanisum

I think you got me wrong... I love harbor freight... I buy stuff there ALL THE TIME (my engine stand, engine hoist, chains, misc welding accessories, gloves, stuff like that)... I lvoe the store as a whole. It's cheap! However, Harbor Freight doesn't come to mind when I hear "quality". I EXPECT the stuff to work once or twice and break. When it costs so less, it's worth it at times. Sockets, drill bits, etc are all crap (few exceptions) but when you need it on the spot, paying a buck for a socket is sweet... even if you only get to use it once. (Rather than pay 8 bucks for a craftsman (or the like))

Edit: For the note, all I use is Craftsman hand tools, haha. They're VERY nice and lifetime warranty just "does it for me". Stanley, Snap-On, etc... all nice too, haha

Same ones everyone is raving about in the 12 ton but in what you are asking for.

I've got this same set and have had them for a long time. My dad originally got them from Harbor Freight back when they did mail order out of a catalog back in the early 80s. Very good quality and and have held up to a lot of use over the years. I should probably go and get another set or two just to have them handy.

Cheap yes but to tell the truth great stuff. My garage is full of their carp and I am totaly happy with it....and I feel much safer using their stands than the old 3 ton units I use to use....I now only use them to hold my exhaust up.

And P.A. has a great warranty program!....recommended!!
