Pete84
If all the smog equipment from a 280ZX is pulled out, a full exhaust put in - high flow cat to keep legal -, how much of a performance gain is there? Might be moving to a smog free state, so I'm now looking post-75.
woldson
Hard to say. When the car sounds meaner, butt dyno is interfered with by the ear dyno. I did 2 1/2 exhaust with headers no cat and a sebring muffler. Added to that an aggesive bullfrog cam, electric fan and cold air intake. Just that alone was extreamly impressive for driving!!! N/A of course. The car "felt" 2x more powerfull even though it was not, just to give you an idea. Man that car was fun!! 82ZX Hardest part of the build was the headers, 6 into 1, have to remove intake and exhuast because of gasket, had the rest of it done by a shop.(for the exhaust)
so_icey84
removing smog equipment like EGR and such does not increase hp, exhaust would add about 4-8 whp for full exhaust, I put 2-1/2" exhaust w/ no cat, magnaflow muffler and headers, with intake, felt a little bit of difference, car ran smoother but thats about it. Loud exhaust sometimes gives you the impression that you're going fast but you really aren't lol.
MJLamberson
you would get more impressive gains for about the same amount of dough with other mods, such as a cam
woldson
^^Yea but once you put a cam in you have to start scewing with running rich at idle due to low manifold pressure. Also Intake and exughst really help the cam do its job.
cockerstar
A cam and intake/exhaust really go hand in hand. You can be fine with an intake/exhaust, but if you are going to do a cam you really should do the others.
Gollum
There's no way to get around it, CATs rob power. Not much, and not nearly as much as some people say, but they do. On the flip side, good quality high flow cats will still rob power, but it will be unoticable in most cases compared to just no cat. Performance oriented cats are very well built and do their job well without much of any exhaust restriction. But even the worst cat will only be robbing 3-5hp at most in my experience. The one car that I think has the MOST potentail for HP via cat removal is the 95' mustang cobra... which had 6 catalytic converers. Most of the aftermarket cat systems for those cars only have 2 cats, mostly because they're made that much better than the OEM ones. As you can imagine it improves flow on those cars quite a bit. But on the nissan... I don't think any of the emission stuff is really taking up that much power. It might help to unclutter the engine bay and clean it up to remove all the smog stuff, but I don't think it's really necessary for performance. woldson
If you do the exhaust w/headers it will be done for all other upgrades. I always do the harder stuff frist. Ether way it will sound cooler and inspire you to continue. You are right Gollum. The sound though is sooooo satisfieng.
bakerzxt
yea i have a 280zx turbo and it is straight piped. it sounds pretty sweet. outside of the car it is really loud but it isnt't loud at all inside i was suprised at that. when i went to straight pipe from stock exhaust i felt a good increase in power. i have a clip of the exhaust in my signature
