JustinOlson
I purchased a set of bad dog frame rails for my 280z. The set I recieved are made from 10GA steel (0.131" thick). Is this overkill? Should I get the thinner gauge units that are 12GA (0.1046" thick)? The difference in weight between the two is about 4lbs. Should I just not worry about it and use what I received? Challenger
4 lbs? Who cares about 4 lbs. Think on the bright side it will take longer to rust. Im amazed that they made it from 10 guage.
JustinOlson
Yeah, they are freakin beefy. I guess it really doesn't matter. I'll just use what I have got.. My only concern was welding the thick metal to the factory floor pan. I should be ok, but it will be a little tricker. Justin
EMWHYR0HEN
I wouldn't worry about it considering the thicker ones are a bit more ridged and the weight is down really low. Just keep most of the heat on the thicker SFC and youl be fine. Good luck!
jerryb
Go for it....do you think you will notice 4 pounds?
jnjdragracing
I bought a set from BADDOG, installed them about a month ago and I was surprized with quality of them, They were a little thick but I consider that is where you needed some strength. Driver side went on with out a hitch, just when I miged them do more on the heavy stuff and it wil melt in with the light metal. Passenger side, well when I installed them it did not go all the way up to the floor pan like the driver side. Maybe the rails are slightly diffirent on the 280Z? One is taller then the other? auxilary
either use sheet metal screws to force the floor pan to the rail, put a jackstand where the floorpan bows under the baddog rail. lower car onto the baddog rail and jackstand, stitch weld it to the Z, and then let it settle. the baddog rail will pull the floor pan rail out for the most part
proxlamus©
unless you compete VERY competitively.. 4 pounds wont make a difference.. Your body weight will vary weight up to 5 pounds depending on hydration and food and waste levels. Also 1 gallon of gas = 6 pounds... so fill up 1 gallon less in fuel to compensate =)
JustinOlson
Its not really the weight but the welding that I'm worried about. I'll just take my time and work with it. Justin
JMortensen
Use a setting on the welder that is really on the high end for the sheet metal. Start your weld on the SFC's and drag the puddle onto the floor.
