ktm
A brand spanking new Garrett T03/04E 50 trim I bought from James Thagard back in April 2007. Will the problems never f***ing end?!? Sigh....
nick.mitchell69
Whats up?
ktm
Was out doing some tuning runs and purging my meth injection lines of water. I was simply doing a third gear pull when all of a sudden I start POURING smoke out of my exhaust. I stop the car and hear something like a ball bearing bouncing around inside the exhaust housing as the turbo is spooling down. It develops NO boost whatsoever now and just pours smoke. Calgary280ZT
Good timing, just before MSA...that sucks. What happened?
80LS1T
There's not like a year warrenty on it is there? I doubt you have that many miles on it... Did you contact James and see what he can do for you? Guy
ktm
Just dissected the turbo. The nut holding the compressor wheel came OFF and went into the wheel. The turbo is TOAST. I just hope the engine internals are ok..... Does anyone have Thagard's contact information? I know he moved to South Carolina in Mayish. Bernardd
Well that sucks. PM James. He might be a few days to reply but he still checks in every now and then. I contacted him about buying a turbo recently and he told me he wasn't selling them anymore but perhaps he can still do something for you. ktm
Update, the cartridge is SHOT. The shaft connecting the compressor wheel and exhaust turbine SNAPPED.
nick.mitchell69
Did it cause more damage or can you get away with a minor overhaul, shaft, seals etc?
Sparks280zt
Thats the third time for his turbos I beleive. Yours, austins, and warrens?
ktm
I am not implying that James is selling crap and do not want others to construe that from this post. This is just a vent about my recent string of bad luck, capped off with this right before MSA. I guess the good news is that I am getting the turbine housing ceramic coated as well as the outside of the wastegate, and the downpipe will be ceramic coated as well. slownrusty
Bo - Were you able to contact James? I have the exact same turbo as yours, bought from him. I wonder what my fate is? I also know Garrett has the same turbo, but I have not heard of him having issues. Sorry to hear all the woes, when it rains it thunders! My 2year project is having its own set of similar issues...so I feel for you. Hang in there buddy. Yasin
Sparks280zt
Pretty sure Garret lost his turbo too.
ktm
James and I have been in contact and he is talking to his builder. There was no warning signs at all. I was doing a third gear pull when all of a sudden I heard a muffled poomph! and smelled smoke. I immediately pulled over and noticed that the car was puffing smoke. I revved the engine once and heard the sickly sound of the compressor wheel rubbing on the housing as well as a huge smoke plume bellowing out from the exhaust. Yasin, hope all goes well on your end. Been a rough few months here and so far I've been relatively "lucky" in that nothing has taken out the pistons, bearings or rings.....yet! hughdogz
Wow. I had no idea there were so many failures Doesn't Chris (Big Phil's friend) have an SST turbo too? Bo, I know the feeling of not knowing if you'll be ready in time for MSA. I cringed when I read this post a couple days ago. Unbelievable the number of trials you've had to overcome. It doesn't seem fair. You'll get 'er done!
Sparks280zt
Maybe go with a Holset if you are in a crunch for money.
