Miles
We used a W.c. Camaro T5 five speed trans for our V8 conversion. There seems to be a lot of trans fluid coming out of the tail stock of the trans when the car is parked on a slope. Do I need to replace a seal or did I just put too much fluid in the trans? Thanks Miles
Mike C
Does the yoke you used have a vent hole? It did for automatics but I don't think it is need in manual trans. Otherwise I'd think maybe the rear seal is bad. It's awful hard to overfill the manual if you use the fill plug and fill it to the bottom of the threads. Guest Anonymous
I agree, probably the tailshaft seal. They get scarred sometimes when they remove them at the wrecking yard. Then again, how much angle are we talking about on this driveway? Either way, the seal should keep the fluid back even if its standing on its bumper ( wouldn't that be cool? ). pparaska
Other than the seal and the hole vent in the yoke, check to see that there's not too much play side-to-side in the tail shaft. There's generally a bushing in the tail housing that keeps the yoke from moving side to side too much. If that's worn (from previous use behind an imbalanced driveshaft for instance), you'd have to replace that.
Miles
Do I have to pull the trans to replace the rear seal? Thanks Miles
pparaska
No, but you might want to either lift the rear of the car higher than the front, or drain a pint or so of fluid before you remove the driveshaft. After you pull the driveshaft, the seal is staring at you from the back of the tranny.
