Guest kcambron
I have found a donor car, 1978 280Z, I called the owner and he doesn't know if the car has a 4 or 5 speed! I probably won't buy the car if it's a four speed so I was wondering what you guys think? This car has been sitting about four years , what are the odds of this tranny being any good? I know the rebuilds can get pretty costly. Thanks, Kevin
280Zone
They can be either 4 or 5 speeds in 78. And of course there was the automatic too.
fl327
i thought 78 only had five speed and r200, or auto
marcus70ZT
wow, the guy wont even go out there and row through the gears once to let you know? have you tried saying "pretty please?"
Mudge
Well, the 5 speed started in 77, so there is a good chance it is a 5 speed but dont know if that was an option versus the 4 speed, or if it was the sole option other than the Autoshmatic. I'd ask him to row for you
Guest Anonymous
From my experience , if the owner does not know if it is a 4 or 5 speed, you had better go look yourself since it may not even have a transmisssion setting that long . The owner may not have all his fingers which would surely complicate the count to
Pop N Wood
You said this is a donor car. Donor for what? If you are putting in a V8 than the stock transmission is an ebay item anyway. Or do you want this car for the engine and transmission? The Datsun 5 speeds are relatively cheap and not expensive to rebuild. I had mine done years ago and I don't remember it costing more than a clutch job.
johnc
What's wrong with a 4 speed? Dirt cheap to rebuild (under $250), strong, and light. They also work well with a 3.54 gear.
