denny411
The cheapest and easiest would be to replace the entire diff. might as well go lsd while your at it Diff replacement is a fairly easy job that can be accomplished with basic hand tools. I see no reason why you couldn`t do it yourself. Most garages will charge about 50.00 hrand spend at least 4 hrs + parts to repair your existing diff. Or... you could pick one up at a junk yard for less than a hundred and either put it in yourself of have a shop do it. It shouldn`t take a shop with a lift more than two hrs(even if they pad it a little) to simply swap out the diff itself.
Mike C
Backlash is adjusted by shifting the ring gear closer to the pinion to tighten it up or away to loosen it up. It can be done with one piece shims from Nissan or a universal R&P installation kit available from most mail order places. 7.5/7 5/8 GM kit should work nicely. Backlash should never have to be adjusted. Most likely it is not your R&P backlash that needs to be adjusted, but you cooked the spider and/or side gears. (This is most common in high powered/aggressively driven open diff cars. Wheel spin on one side tears up the differential gears but not the ring & pinion.) If the ring and pinion have shifted relative to one another it is most likely because of a bearing failure. New bearings should fix that. As Denny noted, it's usually cheaper to replace yours than repair it, depending on its woes.
jt1
All the slack in a rear isn't necessarily backlash. Backlash is the amount of free play between the ring and pinion. Wear in the spider gears, carrier and stub shaft splines, and bearings contribute to the total slack. If it's just the backlash and all the other stuff is OK, the carrier can be shimmed over to correct the backlash, and it's not a huge job. SOMETIMES this causes a whine in the rearend no matter how well it's done. The gears are already worn and changing their contact areas make them noisy. You can pull the rear and take off the back cover to inspect it. If nothing looks like it has much wear, it might be a good candidate to reshim, especially if it's a LSD or hard to find ratio. If it looks a little rough and it's a 3:54 open diff, I'd do like Denny says and find another, they are fairly plentiful. John
Miles
Thanks for the input. I think I'll just buy a diff from the local Nissan recycle yard. They go for about $100-$125 here in Sacramento. Thanks Miles
Miles
My R200 diff has developed a lot of backlash. With the car on jack stands and in gear there is a lot of slack in the diff when I turn the right wheel back and forth. The diff clunks in first and reverse if I don't ease the clutch out. How is backlash fixed and is it an expensive job for a shop to correct? Thanks Miles
