JMortensen
Yeah, it's like the guys said, it's not just a box stock 700, it's about the different grade of barrel, being floated, a jeweled trigger, and a match grade firing pin spring/sear. I shot on the national rifle team for a couple years. I have a couple SKS (vietnam AR) and an M4 and an LAR Grizzly AR15. The Bushmaster m4 is right out of the box but the grizzly has a match grade fluted stainless barrel and custom upper. I shot a coyote at 375 yards last week no problem. I wouldn't try that shot with my m4. Still, how hard is it REALLY to get this stuff. I could pull out my wallet at a gun shop and have a floated, pillar mounted, glass bedded, match barrel, full on trigger job, R700 in whatever caliber I want for how much do you think? $2500. $3000 maybe. There are plenty of hyper accurate rifles in the hands of civilians in this country. I just don't think that machining tolerances in Iran are so far behind the times that they can't do similar work on a quality bolt action there and essentially come up with something similar. Even it it's not "as good" they should still be able to take out a target at 600 yards. Just to prove my point, I did a quick search and found this: http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/cust_remington_700.php If I can write a check for this, I just don't think that the Iranian government can't get a hold of similar technology on that side of the world. johnc
And most everyone here keeps forgetting about the single most important component of a sniper team - the two big chunks of meat operating the weapon system. Carlos Hathcock is more dangerous with a Ruger 10/22 then any one of us with M107.

I need a job. I did just sell one of my motorcycles yesterday and I could pay for two very nice guns or one with a lot of ammo and some addons. Outside of the US and maybe one or two other countries, there isn't the tradition of marksmanship in civilians that leads to great snipers. Guys that have to hunt to put food on the table are going to be better shots than those that don't touch a gun till they join the military.
