adjusting TPS

Recommended Posts

So i think i found my problem on my 1983 280zx turbo. I've gotten multiple people telling me its the TPS and im starting to think it is also. My question is how do i adjust it? the online book says to take off the black cover and check to make sure left and right metal is touching the center at the right time, but it seems like the black cover can't be taken off or can it?

also, do i have to take it off or is there a way to adjust it by hand?

Yeah its a mini potentiometer (rheostat) type deal just a bunch or contacts that the sliders cruises across and gives a resistance reading...

My question: I have been off and on running super rich then not mostly from stoplight to getting going.. is this a TPS deadspot? or should I look at my MAF?

I did the 300zxt ECU swap so I have MAF now but its so weird. Started happening couple days back made all sorts of adjustements to try and compensate.. seems liek sometimes its there sometimes its not.. but when it is I can ust go through gas liek no tomorrow and blow some good mini clouds of black smoke.

Ive tried testing everything soooooooo anyone else have this problem... might just do a Wrecker run find another MAF and tps see it it clears the condition.

There really isn't any adjusting you can do other than to bend the arms inside to make sure they are making contact.

I don't agree with that statement. There are 2 fasteners that attach the TPS to the throttle body and the TPS can be rotated for adjustment.

Your right. But it doesn't really do much. At least not in my experience. I've played with the adjustment on 4 different TPS, 2 on an NA and 2 on a Turbo, and I never noticed any difference in either idle or WOT. Maybe It was just me. I don't know. It made a noticeable difference in my friends 240sx, so maybe its just the type of TPS. I'm definitely no expert. lol.

as I understand it the ZX TPS is (basically) an on/off switch, were as the SX TPS can do the on/off function but also provides information inbetween "on" and "off".

so the SX TPS on my ZXt reads only on/off because thats all the ECU knows to read, but will read more on an SX ECU

Which 240sx does the 60mm throttle body come off of? (S13 with single cam or dual cam or S14) And does it just bolt on or do I need an adapter? Does it work with the throttle linkage or do I need to use a cable? Sorry for all the questions, but I've been trying to find someone with the 240 TB setup.

Its been pretty well covered in archives. It will bolt right up but if you want to retain the stock throttle linkage youll need to mod the linkage on the TB and use a 1in spacer. Idk about the s14 but I know the s13 single cam KA has it. other than that just port your intake mani out to 60mm.

Yeah see Im using a VG30 TPS with a Stanza 60MM TB but I flipping mine upsidedown so the linkage is on the drivers side and the TPS is facing the Pass Side of the TB. This way I did not need a Spacer, But I also used the Stock Linkage from the firewall and just looped a Cable around it and used Cable ties to secure the Loop then ran just enough length to the TB to which I took the VG30 Cable (grabber thingy umm the thing the cable loops around) and mounted it as normal.. SO I have about a 2.5' cable straight from firewall stock linkage to TB and Added an Extra Spring so it returns immidiately.. hehe... Only issue I have now is suddenly I developed a Rich burning deal... Was perfect for weeks so I suspect.. a Temp Sensor.. Old stock injectors or something wacky going on

Oh also if you Test the TPS with a Ohm meter you can see it reads more and more resistance up to about 30% throttle then it hits WOT (switch closed) and if you rock it back and forth to change the first stage resistance you do get a different Throttle Responce....... just so you know.........
