srbigbutt
I've had my 280z for about a year and a half and I have Daily Driven it with little to no issues. Its extremely fun to drive, but I think its about time to get a new Daily Driver and pump more HP into the Z! Plus a little piece of me dies whenever my Z gets rained on! 8-( Here is my new Daily Driver! Its a 1988 Toyota Supra Turbo. I bought it from my brothers neighbor for $1500. It had been parked in his Garage since 2001 and did not run. I may have overpaid at first thought, but I think its definately worth it now. Here we are getting it out of the Garage for the first time since 2001. The owner had the HG replaced and got frustrated with the mechanic taking to long. So he demanded to get it back. The mechanic rushed to get it back together and did a piss poor job. Vac lines all screwed up and a few things not plugged in and missing. The owner drove it home and didn't like the way it was running, so he parked it and bought a new car. And it just sat ever since!! Towed her home! Poor baby got rained on the first day out of the Garage. Somewhat Decent interior. Leather is a little rough, but not bad. Its an Auto, but thats fine for now. Completely stock and unmolested. Just needed some love and attention. Didn't take much to get her back up and running and I'm still fixing some of the minor issues. So far I've replaced Fuel Pump and Filter, Injector Seals, Valve Cover gaskets, Cam Seals, Tranny Solenoid, Master Cylinder, belts, bunch of hoses and vac lines. And a bunch of other crap! But i'm now driving her to work!! Woohoo! Plus I got the AC Fixed!! Now I may be crazy for having two "Project" cars now. But the Supra will probably stay pretty stock for now. Plus getting parts for it is not to difficult, since I work for Toyota. I just call and get whatever part sent to my office. Now I can focus on upgrading the Z. I plan on installing a Urathane bushing kit, upgrading the brakes all around and then looking for a donor car for my swap. Now that I got a boosted car, it only wants me to get the L28ET in the Z now!! I had missed the feeling!! Been a while since I had my Z31T and Z32TT. datsun723
I had an '88 turbo too! Great great cars! The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the struts for the stupid TEMS are flippin' expensive! Never had a problem with it except for minor things. Have fun with it! srbigbutt
I almost feel like I went over to the "Dark Side" buying a Supra! I've always been a Z guy. lol. But I'm definately enjoying it so far. Struts and Shocks are difinately on my list of upgrades. I will probably go with something that will allow me to keep my TEMS. But right now i'm just fixing the things that need to be fixed. One thing is for sure, I enjoy the Z community much better then the Supra community!! Damn Supra forums are full of jack asses! srbigbutt
Thanks, I don't mind it being an Auto anymore. Knowing the previous owner, I know that he didn't dog it. And I'm now getting spoiled by the auto tranny, power windows, power locks, AC, Power Steering!
Michael
I had a 1987 MK III turbo (5-speed) in the late 1990's. It was comfy, quiet and a great highway cruiser, but felt bloated, and decidedly lacked low-end torque. Head gasket blew twice. This was the car that perpetually gave a sour taste in my mouth regarding turbos. In fact for a while I was very interested in doing a Chevy V8 swap in the Supra! Stock boost is around 6 psi. Over 40K-50K miles of relatively gentle driving, max boost decayed to around 2 psi. But other than the head gasket the car was quite reliable. 3600 lbs!!! srbigbutt
Its definately a pig. Feels like a boat at times. Especially with the blown shocks and worn springs. It feels a little underpowered, but i'm pretty sure with fixing all the minor issues, new intake, a turbo downpipe, 3" free flowing exhaust, it will be plenty for a daily driver. I wouldn't be suprised if the cats were melted and cloging the exhuast system.
