Tim240z
Just bought some aluminum welding rods at the Pomoma Swap meet today. It uses a regular propane torch and welds really nice, even brass to ally, and galvanized to ally. The joint is really strong. I was a bit skeptical about the whole thing so I asked the guy if I could try, so I went around to his bunch of al. and proceded to fill a dime sized hole in a piece of 4" pipe (al). Worked so well , that I bought a crap load of it. Tim
blueovalz
Neat stuff. I used something similar a few years back and was indeed surprised by it's strength. What I had though was more of an aluminum "solder", with a flux around it.
Guest Anonymous
I recently picked some up too. I'll be trying to put injector bosses in with it, I had some photo's of one thats finished using the product so I know it'll work. I played a bit with one stick, and got it to stick pretty well on some aluminum scrap I was playing with. Regards, Lone
BLKMGK
Beware galvanized - I wouldn't touch that stuff with a ten foot pole. The fumes will make you sick! Always wondered about those rods - anyplace to get them online? Lone, keep us posted on your progress!
Tim240z
Yeah, Blk, the lead and zinc in the galvanizing is definitely not too good for the human body!, but I've done it before, just use a fresh air supply, I jimmi rigged something with my compressor. If anyone is interested, I can post the specs on the product and the guys name and phone number who distributes it here in CA (Riverside...30miles east of LA). So if U like I will........ Guest Anonymous
I thought zinc was supposed to be good for you Oysters anyone?
Guest Anonymous
The gas given off by welding galv. steel is poisoness but it is not a huge problem unless you are in a closed area. I worked construction and built 100's of stalls and areas out of galv piping for horse property without any problem. Just have to make sure it is not too concentrated...ie: closed in garage with no vents...that would be bad
Guest Anonymous
Yeah, I welded on galvanized for years when I was welding in a fab shop. Its nasty stuff, smokes like crazy, best tip as mentioned, ventilation and keep your head out of the smoke haha (sounds funny but striving to see you sometimes forget). If your not sure if its been galvanized (hard not to see it in sheetmetal though), look at your tack welds, if you see a white ash like around the edge of the tacks or welds, its probably galvanized. It'll make you nausious as all get out, so definitely maximize ventilation when welding it. So in a word, yes zinc is good for you, but stick to the Flintstone or ScoobyDoo vitamins cause galvanized metal isn't a great source of it... Tim240z
Remember, galvanized metal contails lead, which volatalizes when heated (aka welded). Lead accumulates in the fatty tissues of the body and can never be flushed by the body. Causes all kinds of reproductive and nervous system problems with prolonged exposure....hence ....unleaded gasoline. Good idea whenever working with chemicals...thinners, paints, bondo, welding, to be upwind of the vapors. There is probably stuff that we breath that will be found to be carcinogenic 5 years from now!!!!!, or make valuable parts of your anatomy fall off or sumsuch!! DavyZ
Just to echo some of the comments (because I like to hear myself talk), Galvanize poisoning occurs when your system becomes loaded with the stuff due to improper ventillation. If possible, weld the stuff outdoors, and if the air is stale, use a small fan to blow the smoke past you. FWIW, I like the way the smoke smells, but I never get too close to it!!! pparaska
Tim, where can I buy these rods and what are they called? Thanks,
Tim240z
Pete, It is a guy in Riverside CA. I will scan an order/spec form and e-mail to you (prob only Wed). I made a gear shifter mounting bracket (for the Z28 stock auto shifter) out of Al this weekend using the rods and a bottle of MAPP gas (from Home Depot). Works really well!!! At this point I'm just looking for things to make out of Al just so I can weld it!! Tim
