jeff81
Hey My car is being stripped down and soda blasted. The guy doing the work wants to add the custom rollbar and supports (like engine bay support and frame rails) before the car is blasted. Is this the correct order of things? Please let me know. I thought you strip it down then weld the stuff on? Thanks Jeff
Namor
I don't think there is a set way to do anything when it comes to restoring cars. But I would think that as long as he cleans the areas where he welds, he should be ok to do the welding. Just remember, some people don't even get their cars blasted professionally. Evan Purple240zt
Will be interesting to see what is underneath. I wonder if he wants to blast 2nd so he has the same "tooth" to work with when it comes to paint. Evan
Xnke
Do the body first, find out just how much rust there is before you start dumping money into it...

neotech84
Personally Id do the cage then soda blast. +1 I agree, if you are not too keen on the idea just fab it up but don't install it permanently. Then blast it and weld away!
jeff81
Hey Thank you for the feedback. I am going to have an extended conversation with my mechanic to better understand the situation. I appreciate all the help that I have gotton on this forum. Its amazing how much help that I have received directly and indirectly. I would feel better if he blasted it then did the rollbar and the supports, but this is definitely not the first car he has done. He blasts every car that he works with so that he knows it will last. He works on it like it is his car. That is probably why he is taking so long. Thanks again Jeff
bjhines
I chose to do mine in several stages. I stripped only the paint that was required to repair rust and install the cage. Then I blasted the entire car and followed up with primer and paint the same day. Keep in mind that removing the paint means that it will flash rust. It really needs to be painted within a few days of blasting. I have also noticed that the various rust proofing compounds do not like welding heat. They can emit corrosive gases that will cause instant flash rust.

I want the rust gone first and foremost, at least the worst places. I can't stand the sight of it. I will feel much better when it is gone and then I can focus on other important things. jeff81
Well, it looks like it will be soda blasted within the next few weeks. After that I am going to go through have a roll bar and some body supports welded in. Hopefully it will turn out well. Is Zero Rust paint better than Por for rust prevention? Planning on doing something after all the welding is done. Jeff
