1badeagle
Hey guys my 83 zxt's motor seems to have jumped time, so i plan on pulling the motor and rebuilding it when i fix it. So what im getting at is what are the things that should be addressed when i pull the motor apart? It has around 230,000 miles on it. Im shooting for around 300 rwhp with this motor which shouldnt be a big issue. So what do you guys think i should do?
neotech84
I think you should search and figure out what YOU want to do....... we have no way of knowing exactly what you want done and can only help if you ask better questions. But if you rebuild the motor and refresh the head and turbo you should be good for another 200K+ miles.
1badeagle
Ok, now that i read that i guess i need to be more clear like said. I want to rebuild it without boring it any. I dont really have the money now to build a stroker so thats out to. I think a rering kit should do the job with all new bearings. Where can i get a good kit at? I need rings, gaskets. bearings, timing stuff. I plan to run a 3in turbo back with a custom down pipe of some sort. Should i upgrade the turbo while i have the motor out? Should i have the head milled some? New valve seals? Throw out some more ideas on stuff that needs done.
junglist
If you are just looking for replacement non performance rebuild stuff, I ordered pistons and a timing kit from here: http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/page278.html It got to me very timely and the guy was awesome to order from. The piston brand was "Safety Pistons" and there wasn't anything wrong with them as far as I could tell and the machine shop didn't mention any issues when I had them pressed onto and balanced with my stock rods. I got my Clevite bearings from www.rockauto.com and I ordered my Clevite/Perfect Circle rings on ebay. The only real performance stuff I bought for my rebuild was ARP head studs and rod bolts which I bought from Summit. I went with LD28 Maxima Diesel main cap bolts instead of the ARP due to cost and got those from courtesy parts. The diesel bolts are stronger and take about 20 lb/ft more torque than the regular L28 main bolts. You should definitely have your head at least milled to a gasket surface and have it checked for any problems, that cost me about $80 at my local machine shop. My cylinders were in good shape and within spec so instead of reboring them I bought myself a Flexhone tool for about $50 and just honed them myself. I highly recommend downloading the Nissan Factory Service Manual for the 280ZX Turbo and also get the books How to rebuild your L-series engine, looks like it might be out of print but if you search around I'm sure you can find a place that has it in stock: http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Your-Nissan-Datsun-Engine/dp/1931128030/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253291889&sr=8-1 There is also the How to Modify your Nissan/Datsun engine book which is good: http://www.amazon.com/Modify-Your-Nissan-Datsun-Engine/dp/1931128049/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253291953&sr=8-
thetremendoustim
So what do you think about this set? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2753CC-280ZX-TURBO-L28ET-PISTON-RINGS-SET-6140_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116QQhashZitem3349b38de8QQitemZ220279836136QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2443wt_933 The only things that worry me are: It says its cast aluminum 2753 cc (is the '83 L28et a 2793cc?) Rings are "quality cast steel" what ring combinations are best for a rebuild on a 150K block? Im going to hone/hot tank/shave the stuff but would chrome be a better option?
