chrismiller5157 Posted September 19, 2009 Share Posted September 19, 2009 So, what is the best and fastest way to get the trany off the drive shaft? seems that the cat will need to come off or the the control arms...i have the car in the air and need to get it done and i can't seem to get the drive shaft off..... any pointers? stravi757 Posted September 19, 2009 Share Posted September 19, 2009 Well if you didn't already drain the tranny fluid, do that. If i remember correctly i believe you do have to drop the exhaust as much you can(just unbolt the hangers). Then disconnect the drive shaft from the diff and slid it off. From there, just unbolt the crossmember. Oh and remove the botls from the bell housing first. hope this helps Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
zeeboost Posted September 19, 2009 Share Posted September 19, 2009 How are you not able to get the driveshaft out? If you haven't already, drop the exhaust. It's a lot easier to access and remove everything, and I'm not sure if you can remove the transmission without dropping it. The driveshaft just has 4 bolts/nuts holding it on to the companion flange of the rear diff. Once you remove those bolts, tap the driveshaft with, preferrably a mallet, but a hammer should work fine, to break it free from the companion flange. Then the driveshaft should simply slide off the output shaft of the tranny. Like stravi757 said, don't forget to drain the fluid out first. heavy85 Posted September 19, 2009 Share Posted September 19, 2009 Back when I ran an L6 the driveshaft bolted to the flange on the trans. I never needed to drop the exhaust just lay the front of the driveshaft on the exhaust. After doing it several times I got to where I could have the car on jack stands and the tranny on the floor in under an hour. 14 mm wrench & socket (deep). 10 mm wrench and 17 mm for the slave and it was out. Edz280zx Posted September 20, 2009 Share Posted September 20, 2009 I've always had to drop the exhaust, and then drop the shield that's attached across the tunnel...of course I always toss the shield after dropping it the first time.
