CArFAn
Today it happened. The one thing i thought would never happened. I (multiple swear words) smacked a curb with brute force. My swats are bent to hell and i almost cried when i looked at them. Also my, well idk what it is called but here is a pic its on the frame rail. That tore off from the frame and is now bent to hell as well. along with other things i have not seen yet. "Frame is not bent thank god" Dont know if im allowed to use the pic but it the best i can find to point it out. Also is this a simple fix or am i going to have to hand over a few fingers and leg to a chassis repair shop. I have not the knowledge or know how to fix this. Actual pics once it stops raining, and the story.
FlatBlack
The Tension/Compression Rod box tore off?? Do you do your own welding? Sorry to hear your Swaztikas are gone :/
CArFAn
Yes that. It not off all the way but its torn from its welds im uploading pics now.
CArFAn
Further investigation with the wheel off and really looking the frame is bent but still is straight. Went to pick n pull to get a trans for my 7mgte swap also got headers and a oil pan. All was going good until i was coming off the freeway making a right hand turn. Lights was green, so trusting my half bald tires and welded diff. I try and swiftly make the turn but NO. The 7m trans im carrying in the back along with my passenger and misc of parts and things everything shifted to my side and kicked the rear end out i tried to fight it but it was to far gone came back around went straight to the curb correct and smacked the front passenger side into it then the back said i want some too and it took a hit. So now im F'd in stockton with no way to work. And no Z! Pics: Bad Quality Iphone likes it bright
at-jefft
Is the top of the strut tower bent backwards?
Dan Juday
Is the top of the strut tower bent backwards? Ditto. I'd get out a tape measure if I were you and check some diagonals. If you hit hard enough to tear off the TC rod box my bet is that there's other damage as well. The entire forward sub-frame could be racked and you wouldn't see anything just looking at it. CArFAn
No bending at the strut tower. Just that box torn at the weld and the frame has a little warpage. Im towing it back to oakland and going to call a few shops in the bay area and check out the shops. I want it done right so i dont have any problems later down the road. Before i take it to the shop i think it would be a good time to completely strip the car and pre it for paint and other suspension + brake work. eec564
Before you spend any money on anything, including towing, take Dan's advice and do some serious measuring under the car. Check the FSM for what measurements should be, and make EXTRA sure the diagonal measurements are the same. There can be a lot of chassis warping before it becomes visible. It doesn't take much damage to make it impossible to ever get the wheels back in alignment.

eec564
I dunno. I'm here in bed with a pretty bad cold. Did you get it towed already? When did you weld your diff?
CArFAn
Still in stockton at manteca chilis. Hopefully i can get it towed tomorrow sometime or in a few days so i can tear it down. I welded the diff like 3 months or so ago.
eec564
Trust me, give the car a GOOD check out BEFORE you put another dime in to it. Bent/warped frames are not easily fixed. If you're going to fix it, it MUST be fixed right, or you'll just have issue upon issue. Welded rear ends really are no good on the street, especially in the rain. CArFAn
If it comes down to it i can just the portion off and get a straight part and have it welde back on. Like i said though its pretty straight no bending at the towers only near that box.
CArFAn
Kind of looks like this: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm160/CWE2008/DSC_0215.jpg I found a shop near my job im going to take a look at hopefully i do not have to buy another z there is this strong attachment i have with this car. CArFAn
Got a qutoe at the first frame shop and they were 75$ an hour. Hour and half setting the car up then an approx 6 hours cutting out the box make everything straight re weld the box and do the alignment. So im looking at 7.5hrs * 75$ = 562.50. Seem reasonable? They also said if i have the motor out it can cut the price down a bit as it would give better acces to it and what mot.
Dan Juday
Sounds very reasonable. I'd jump on it before they change their mind. My experiance is that frame work is twice the hourly rate they quoted you. Don't be surprised if the final bill is a few hours more. Always seems to work out that way with body shops. At that rate I wouldn't complain though.
