Wilson_WWSC
It is summer again, time to work on my z. I have a sbc in my 73z with a holley 1850 carb and a really loud aftermarket fuel pump. The carb was rebuilt correctly and tuned. The problem is that when I stomp on the gas, the motor bogs up like crazy and sounds like it is about to stall. I'm wondering if I am getting too much fuel pressure, and would a fuel pressure regulator (a 30$ Holley one) fix my problems. Any input would be appreciated. Geking
that depends. Why do you think you are getting too much pressure? Can you verify this before you throw a part at it? If you do have too much pressure and you are flooding the carb, it would get terrible gas mileage (worse that it should, no such thing as great with that set up) it would run like crap at idle and cruising as well as the gas would flood the carb. It could be that your accel jet is too big, or are you sure that it is too rich? My 73's webbers are not tuned properly and it stumbles when I punch it due to being too lean. Pyro
a bog typically means more accelerator pump is required and/or more ignition timing.
John Scott
Bog with black smoke out rear, too much accel pump shot, either too large of squirter(s) or too long of shot duration. Too lean also will bog, really lean will often backfire out top of carb. Also could be secondary spring not well matched to engine, too light causing premature opening. IMHO, i prefer tuning mechanical secondaries. Fewer items to mess with and no question if they're open. Lots of threads on regulators, best being return style. hoov100
The other problem might be the fact it's one of those autozone truck carbs and was never properly tuned when installed. Also an off the shelf mechanical fuel pump is more then enough for a mild sbc. What size is the carb? LLave
I had the same problem... For it turned out to be the POS foam air filter getting sucked into the carb!
Guest krislou80
There isn't too much pressure. You can just remove the line slow if you like and a little fuel will leak out. Another option is to remove the fuel pump fuse/or relay and try to start the car. It may start but soon will stop. There should be no pressure in the line then. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ AC Delco Fuel Pressure Sensor - To much high on earth
