Tony240ZT
I need to get a rear quarter pannel cut off of a car in the junk yard (no outlets), what kind of tools are there to make this job do able? Mostly interested in battery powered tools, but if someone has had good luck with any hand tool let me know. Thanks much!
Tim240z
Tony, I once used a Black & Decker battery powered SawZall to cut out a spare wheel well out of a '73Z. Just a word of warning, have extra batteries (charged of course) and some (lots) of extra blades for the sawzall. I had to make 3 trips to complete the cut, once for blades (lack thereof) and once for no juice. Tim
Guest Zachb55
also a battery powered dremel tool might work, i have a normal one, and that things spins so fast that it doesnt burn too much electricity, i dont know how long lasting a battery pwrd one would be. sounds like one of these or a sawzall would be your best bet... -Zach
boatbum
Tony, I've been cutting a lot of metal in the past few weeks (chopped the top off) Since a battery powered sawzall is expensive if you don't have one - you might try one of those Ultimate Disc setups on the cordless drill. I bought one for like $10 when I got my $19 grinder and the grinder works better (more RPM)but that cutoff wheel for the drill also works and chances are you have a cordless drill already and it has a 7" wheel so it should last long enough to complete the job. Just my $.02 Teo
Big Kahuna
Just a thought. But maybe you can go to home depot or a tool rental place and rent a honda generator. Wala!!!! a power source for your array of power tools. wish I had thought of that when I found a awsome Scott Brunning Conv conversion in a junk yard once. It killed me to see all those man hours going to the crusher.
Tony240ZT
Good idea about the generator. Wonder if one could power my 6hp air compressor. Even if it did, I don't think the compressor will fit in the back of the Z.. HAHA.. I'll have to ask the yard about if they have a problem with a generator. I can pick up a running 240z for $250, interior is bad, rubber is bad, but body is good enough. I may just bite on it, if anyone else knows of any cars in the so cal area that may not run or have front end damage let me know about it. Is there anything on an old beat up 240z that is worth anything? Maybe the SU's, and bumpers? Anything else? Would be nice if I could part it out to get some money back. I'm sure my neighbores wouldn't be happy. Thanks.
Mike C
Just about anything, Tony! Wiring harness, instruments, tail lights, turn signals, switch gear, dash, control cables, bezels, door panels, half shafts, hubs, brake drums, and on and on! Hard to go wrong with a running car for $250.
TomoHawk
I was going to suggest a pneumatic nibbler too and a portable air tank. You can fill the tank from a 12V compressor you keep in the car. I wouldn't know how long the air would last. I wouldn't suggest the battery-powered mooto-tool. I got one only for emergencies and small modeling jobs where the power coord would get in the way.
