Distortion
Hey guys so iwas driving my 260z with an l26 carbed motor and when i stopped the engine made a strange noise (sounded like a blow off valve) and now it is idleing very rough. And wont stay on without holding the choke open. I dont know if maybe a vacuum line could have popped off or what because they all seem to be intact. I also have a strong gasoline smell to my oil. Im not sure what is causing these issues. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

jasper
A choke is CLOSED when it is ON. A choke is OPEN when it is OFF. The console lever is rearward when it is ON. The console lever is forward when it is OFF. The 260Z as built does not require the "holding" of the CHOKE in any postion. What exactly are you holding ON??? Note;refers to standard terminology...NOT necessarily enrichment circuits.
Distortion
I have to hold the choke lever back for it to run semi properly
jasper
Pulling the choke lever back "closes" the choke, adding fuel to the mixture. At the same time, it increase curb idle speed.(like stepping on the gas pedal) This will compensate for a lean condition, GENERALY caused by a vacuum leak. While the engine is running with the choke on, go under the hood and listen for hissing/whistling/sucking noises. Most probably a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak can also can also be found by spraying carb cleaner strategicaly. Listen for an immediate increase/change in engine speed/noise. Good luck. Tony D
So you heard a lean backfire... That jibes with engaging a starter circuit/choke to keep it running. One other thing, you said "L26 with Carbs" and that doesn't tell us which ones---the Flat Tops you should have on there DO have a 'choke' with a traditional plate and all. Earlier carbs (Round Tops) while it says 'choke' really it is a starter circuit which positions the jet down further in the well allowing more fuel to be added while incrementally bumping open the throttle plate to help perform this function. jagster
I have made the swap to early carbs so many times I have lost count on 260Z's. The flat tops are junk, period. OK, if originality is important, then play with them ad nauseum, but to be able to reliably drive the car, then the early carbs are the way to go. The original knockoffs of the famous SU carb are bone simple and really make a difference.
