What is the item that you are cooling the "Head Unit"??? Please use the proper terminology such that appropriate advice can be issued. It sounds as though the Alternator is good but the wiring is faulty and not connecting the alternator to the battery properly. Do you have the wiring diagram for the 240Z? What is the "Digital Gauge"??? What does this gauge indicate? The 240Z has the ammeter in series with the alternator and the battery to measure charge/discharge current. What is the ammeter indicating throughout all these exercises? An appropriately charged battery should be slightly greater than +12 volts. When cranking the engine for starting the voltage should not go lower than 8 volts DC. If it goes lower there are bad cells in the battery. When the alternator is initially charging after engine start, the alternator voltage should be +14.x volts. As the battery attains a charge the alternator voltage should taper off somewhat from +14v yet still stay above +12v. The newer alternators need only a small amount of current from the battery to provide excitation for the alternator field to cause it to generate 12 - 14 vdc. There may be an excitation return (2 wire excitation) to ground or battery negative to complete the circuit. Normally the case of the alternator is the return or ground path for both excitation and heavy current to charge the battery. The other heavy post or connection on the alternator connects back to the battery through a heavy current (low or no resistance to current flow) fused wire. Older alternator charging systems had more (complicated) wiring than newer charging systems.
Hope this helps. Will look at the 240Z wiring diagram to see which OLD alternator system wiring IS NOT NEEDED.

This is saved for my own referance.
The 5-lug swap is quite easy, the most difficult part will be getting the
caliper-disk spacing correct. I have done this swap on several 510's and it
works really well.
Get the front hubs and rotors off an 84-89 300ZX Turbo, or an 86-89
non-turbo 300ZX. Remove the hubs and rotors off of your 280ZX struts and
slide the 300ZX hub onto the spindle. You will note that the spacing for the
rotor does not match the caliper. You will need to make or fabricate a
spacer to match the difference between the rotor and where the caliper
mounts to the strut. Another way to do this is to seperate the disk from the
rotor and make a spacer that fits between the hub and rotor.
This is also an excellent opportunity to upgrade to a better front brake
caliper. The 300ZX disks are 11" diameter and vented-- even bigger than your
280ZX disks. One swap that I saw that worked really well was the use of
Toyota four-piston truck calipers on the 300ZX disks. The Toyota calipers
are very common and easy to find. They are however, very heavy as they are
made from iron.
Another brake caliper to use is the one off of the 86+ Mazda Turbo II's.
This is an all-aluminum, four piston caliper, and can be found quite easily.
The RX-7 caliper is very light, and there are plenty of performance pads to
be found for them. This is the setup that I am using on my 510. You will
have to build a spacer to use these calipers (but you have to do that
anyway) and you will need to match the RX-7's caliper bolt pattern (easy to do).
** note from Ross: these pads are ~4x3", a huge pad by any standards!**
The rear disks are easy to convert to five-lug. I am using 280ZX rear
trailing arms so I have direct experience with this part of the project.
First remove the four-lug disk, caliper, and stub axle from the control arm.
You will need a large impact wrench to remove the stub axle, they have a
single, very large nut that requires an impact to remove it. Slide the stub
axle out of the control arm and use a press to remove three of the four
studs. Since the four lug pattern is 4x4.5, and the 5-lug pattern is 5x4.5,
one of the studs is in the correct place. I had a spare 5-lug disk that I
used as my pattern. Slide the disk over the remaining stud and center the
disk onto the stub axle. Once you are sure that the disk is centered, mark
the other four holes. Use a drill press to drill the holes just barely
larger than the new studs that you are going to install. You want the studs
to just fit through the hole. Using the press again, press the other four
studs splined ends into the stub axle. One of the studs will be close to the
edge of the stub axle because of the 5-lug pattern. We determined there is
enough material to support it, but if you are concerned you can easily add

(CNN) -- While cleanup crews and technical teams continue efforts to stop crude gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana lawmakers are proposing a different approach: prayer.
State senators designated Sunday as a day for citizens to ask for God's help dealing with the oil disaster.
"Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail," state Sen. Robert Adley said in a statement released after last week's unanimous vote for the day of prayer. "It is clearly time for a miracle for us."
The resolution names Sunday as a statewide day of prayer in Louisiana and calls on people of all religions throughout the Gulf Coast "to pray for an end to this environmental emergency, sparing us all from the destruction of both culture and livelihood."
Maybe we can sacrifice a few chickens and goats while we are at it? Oh wait, do pelicans and sea turtles count or was that accidental so the gods will not look favorably upon us?
These people are our leaders?
British Petroleum has lost 90 billion dollars or roughly Â½ of itsâ€™ net worth in the last two months since the beginning of the disaster in the Gulf. Planned implimentation of a plug for the leak in the Gulf of Mexico is two months away. Rudimentary mathematics would project the company being out of money by that time. BPâ€™s assets include ; oil wells,
refineries, equipment etc.. Not to mention investments in several nations governments. Too big to fail indeed.
What we are not privy to is the moving around of assets, hiding them if you will from the scrutiny of prying eyes who in this case is the US government and to a lesser degree the peoples of the Gulf Coast. Twenty billion dollars has been set up as a slush fund to begin paying off people whose livelihoods have been interrupted. I think that this initial cash outlay is going to be spent very quickly. I have read stories of grossly inflated claims from would be recipients of this aid and why not? Getting paid is the American way. But who compensates the families of the dead turtles, and pelicans? How does one place value on a shattered ecosystem? Like we say in America, thatâ€™s the cost of doing business. the Gulf of Mexico will be considered "an acceptable loss" as long as the money (and oil)keeps flowing.
These payments are going to buy people off basically or dull the rancor which emanates from their mouths, at least for a little while. See, the most hated and infamous dictator said, "Everyone has a price, itâ€™s just that you would be surprised at how low it is.â€ The money will buy good publicity and that is about all that BP can do because they donâ€™t seem to be very good at plugging oil leaks. As everyone profits from the calamity one would be hardpressed to not realize where this is going to end up. Institutionalized greed and weak moral fiber have quietly usurped any spiritual guidance we might have had in the USA. We are not a christian nation under god. We have five percent of the worldâ€™s population and consume 25 percent of the resources. We are a nation of destroyers and our religion is nihilism.
Well for me this event has faded into the background noise of the rest of the items which come through the TV screen. It's not in my immediate sphere so to walk around in a sense of despairing outrage is not only hypocritical it's not conducive to a healthy mental state.
The interesting part now is the tangled web of consequences. This is gonna be good. First you got BP whose shares have fallen 17 % since this started. BP in Britain is the biggest pension holder and also one of the barometers of that countries economic health. Guess which country is also one of our chief supporters in the "War On Terror" in Afghanistan and elsewhere? That could be a huge trump card should they choose to play it.
Then we have the red staters along the Gulf Coast who even though their states coasts are awash in petroleum are lobbying the federal government to cease and desist with the moratorium on offshore drilling as it will cost jobs. I guess these are the same people who want big government out of their lives (except when they need rescuing). I even saw Louisiana's state representative explaining on the tube that "1/2 the folks down here make their living fishing and the other 1/2 make their living in the oil business". Wow talk about a conflict of interests!
You got Kevin Costner on Capitol Hill lobbying for the usage of his oil/ water separation machines and basically being told they will probably be too expensive to use. That's great, always a friggin' bottom line to watch out for, even when the price for non implementation
could be far too costly to our only home (assuming his machines work of course). Like I guess now a monetary value has been placed on the only hospitable planet that we know of in the cosmos. Gotta love them bean counters. Oh well I guess we get the representation we deserve.
It's not all bad news though, even though hurricane season is being hyped as being one possibly for the record books, oil could actually help to not make that so.
When oil is released in a body of water it spreads in a layer a few molecules thick and diminishes the production of capillary waves which as a consequence prevents the wind from "gripping" the sea. Waves build exponentially and it has been studied and documented that oil in the water of the oceans inhibits production of large scale waves during storms.
As far as chaos goes this is gonna be a helluva show...

We enjoyed a wonderful day at the beach yesterday with a clean sky, clean beach and clean water. Yes there were the omnipresent offshore oil rigs dotting the horizon but as I mused to no one in particular, they are for sure double and triple checking their emergency procedures.
I have friends in the oil business out here, and out here they still remember the Santa Barbara spill of 1969 so they take their procedures very seriously and are forced to by the local regulatory agencies. The reputation that the Gulf Coast oil industry has is that it's populated for the most part by a bunch of "git-r done" renegades and has a history of lax regulation enforcement.
We still have primary destruction going on as the gusher continues. Secondary destruction of the Gulf food chain and wetlands has also arrived. When it's really going to hit home is when tertiary destruction starts. When all those poor nations which ring the Gulf of Mexico
that rely on the ocean for their food source can no longer sustain themselves because the whole food chain is gone. That's when the real fireworks are going to start because people driven by hunger will do and are capable of anything in the course of satiating their hunger.
Don't fool yourself, one of the only reasons we have no violent uprisings in America is because we have good food and plenty of it. And Spencer and Heidi are on the tube now, I'll get back to you later...
It's real easy to see how this disaster happened and not just from a bubble of methane or bad concrete. One wrong turn led to another and it started a long time ago. From oil discovery and utilization to saleable commodity to industry deregulation to unbridled human greed, lust for power and unchecked arrogance.

Remakably prescient. No one seems to react to anything because we are witnessing the most complete (if misguided) authoritarianism of the modern age. We are owned completely; every thought, every impulse, every desire has been programmed from an early age. Freedom is a destructive illusion. All this was alluded to in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World Revisited" written in 1958 when he said that the totalitarianism of the future would rely on a system of rewards to keep people in line as opposed to violence and force. Just the threat of the latter is enough to control most, including me. The only way to escape is to "lose one's mind" (whatever that means)" because again Huxley states that individual insanity is immune to the consequences of collective insanity. One can also see the impulse of a people to act against their own best self interests in the masterwork of Wilhelm Reich "The Mass Psychology of Fascism". Political paradigms don't seem to disappear they just get recontextualized.
So we sit and wait for people who aren't really in control to do something to save this planet from our monumental blunder. Or we pray to some deity who never seems to be there to save us from ourselves.
But it wasn't god who drilled that hole which exploded, it wasn't the devil who could not control the escaping gas bubble , it was just us and we're alone on this one.
Yes, catatastrophe is the right word. I don't even think the psychic shock of what an oil spill on the level of this has even sunk in yet. An Exxon Valdez level spill; every five days.
Ask the residents of coastal Alaska what that was and continues to be like.
That's how much oil has/is been/ being released. I think the Gulf of Mexico is history. I mean there was already a "dead (hypoxic) zone" at the mouth of the Mississippi from agricultural runoff. This will pretty much seal the deal.
The damage will spread outward in waves. First as the oil washes ashore, we will have a visual with all the usual pathos of oil-soaked birds and oil drowned fish. Then the science will confirm what we see; that the Gulf of Mexico life support systems are gone. The human toll (other than the initial killed 11 victims) comes next, tourism and livelihoods eradicated and the byproducts of this; despair rises manifested by increased drug and alcohol use, domestic violence, murder and suicide go up. This is going to last for a very long time, if there is the luxury of time remaining at this point in history.
People don't seem to want to acknowledge what has happened on any level other than the mundane or at least feign outrage, but maybe that's because the usual human mind has a cutoff point for abject horror when it is too much for one soul to take. There are many prices to pay in the slaying of ones illusions in this world and the loss of this reflex is one of them.
The blame game is pointless. The further one follows that thread, one finds the truth. We are all complicit. The irony that I am blogging this on an auto enthusiasts website is not lost on me. I am addicted to petroleum, and I can't quit. Everyday brings a fresh relapse and I will not stop. It's easier to ween a junkie off of heroin than it is to get me off of petroleum. It's everywhere and part of everything. I was born into it. It's got a stranglehold on my psyche.
I don't think we're ever going to stop until all the resources are used up and everything is destroyed. But that's the cyclical nature of things, everything ends, and this is the beginning.
Man this winter has been unreal... Yesterday morning I blew snow for about an hour while I was letting the fire warm the garage... By yesterday afternoon we'd picked up another 10 inches and I had to go back over it again... We're at over 2 feet.
So, I managed to finish up the base for the driver's seat, and get it primed and painted and ready to reinstal the seat. I also managed to finish up the hood Dzeus fastener adjustment so they all work now... Today I might get back down there and finish up the harness mounts for the harnesses for both seats. The original bar location was to low for the mounting of the seats. Unfortunately when I had the cage done, I did not have seats yet and the fabricator was guessing I'd have the seats on the floorpan... So... No big deal, but I need to raise the shoulder strap locations...
I also need to weld a pair of braces in at the fuel cell that will aid in rear impact safety and a couple of small brackets for bolting on the radiator air box... Then the welding is done and I can get back to the final buttoning up of the car.
On the Miata front, I have the car stripped and loaded in the car trailer. It's going out for a SPEC LEGAL specmiata cage instal. The car was supposed to be at their shop on Friday, but the impending weather diverted us... I'm hoping to get there tomorrow, but the region is under a state of emergency and the auxilery drive to the shop has NOT been cleared yet...
On the dreaded black winged car front... got it back from a lengthy stay at the shop. Had the transmission completely gutted and rebuilt with much stronger parts, along with a new billet Guards limited slip, upgraded clutch/pressure plate, and upgraded clutch hydraulics. I've got a pile of new parts to instal on it. New monoball suspension components, new Xflow exhaust system, new front bumper cover and inner fender liners... Lots of bits and pieces.
Has anyone installed an 280ZX Auxillary Cooling Fan in a 240Z. How do you make this work. I have the auxillary cooling fan and the fan timer. Just need to know how to connect this unit so that it runs when the car is switched off.
So today was eventful...
I welded up all four side mount plates for the Dzues fasteners, and then drilled all of the holes in the bumper cover. I then mounted the pop-out aluminum Dzues fasteners inplace on three of the 6 locations... I ran out of pop-rivets, so that part of the project is on hold until I can get more rivets.
I also welded on the extension for the front tow hook. While I was at it, I added gussets for the oil filter relocation mount, and welded gussets to the brackets that hold the Dzues base plates for the MSA type 3 bumper cover.
While working on those issues, I moved to the mounts for the Carbon hood.
Once I get the rivets, I'll relocate one mount for the hood, and finish up the "prime" and "paint" on the areas I welded up. I'll then move to the seat base and the few brackets I need to weld in for the interior safety. Window net brackets and such... Then I'll move to the rear of the car and finish up the welding back there...
We're in final preparation for this coming season for track events, and I'd previously mentioned to the wife that I really expected to use the trailer a lot more this year. The "wants" list for the trailer is fairly large, since the trailer, although having finished ceiling and walls, is pretty basic. I've got a work bench with a grinder and vice, along with a wire wheel, but no power. I need to have a small subpanel installed, better lighting for the interior, an AC system for the roof, a source for heat, and portable power...
She's a good listener, that wife of mine... Along with some nomex and some upgraded suspension alignment tools, she bought be a very small, very quiet 2000watt generator for the car trailer. For $179 shipped, the thing is amazing. So now I need to talk with a guy I know who does a lot of work on car trailers and see what he'll charge for installing a small sub-panel, and outlets inside the trailer, along with some flouresent lighting. I've already sourced and will instal the AC unit later this spring.
On the car front, we've entered final discussions with the cage builder for the Spec Miata. Piper Motorsports did the cage in the Zcar for me in 2005 and that ran me $2400. I expected a race certified spec legal cage to run me well over $3000... But because I'm a repeat customer, they're charging me $2500. Can't pass it up.
The Zcar, which is the point of having a blog (so I'm told) on a Zcar site, is getting some new bracing welded in today. I'll weld in the final impact supports for the sides, and also finish up the DZEUS fasteners for the MSA type3 airdam/bumper. I wanted to be able to pull it off quickly and easily to load the car into the trailer... And that's what we're going to be able to do... I'll have a total of 6 fasteners holding the bumper cover on. PIcs will follow in the project thread. I'll also add a few braces here and there for other stuff, and some tabs for bolting the bottom of the airbox on to the radiator mount, along with the bolt tabs for the front tow hook. We're going to get rid of the Moroso switch box and use some of that KYDEX I ordered (I have a bunch of this stuff we're going to form for fender liners and other panels...) to make a console panel to house a flat switch plate. We're also going to bolt on an eyelet for the right side net to hook to off the mounts for the dash tube from the cage. I've also got a bit of welding to do on the driver's seat mount that will take about an hour... Once this list of items is done, I need to get a windshield mounted, and I need to DRIVE the car to debug it. That's pretty much it.
Got the JM lexus technician job and I couldn't be happier.
I dropped off that resume cold about 5 months ago.
Then I whine here on this blog and get a phone call to come in for an interview a couple days later.
Three straight days of interviews and a piss test later, I am employed.
I'll keep developing the L28et Infiniti M30 but it will be hard to not be seduced by the dark side to the point of putting together a toyota/lexus project.
Many things begin tentatively and tritely, so why not this?
For over 10 years I have been tinkering with my Datsun, first as a newbie owner of a dilapidated stocker, then as a customer of a semi-pro building who did a fantastic job on a roll cage and V8 swap â€“ only to find myself unable to deal with what really amounts to car maintenance, rather than car building. Over the years moved from California to the Midwest, bought a house in the countryside with a long driveway for burnouts and plenty of garage space, but my skills have not improved, and my motivation has atrophied. And no, I canâ€™t blame family tensions or job loss or dementia (at least not yet); some of the greatest obstacles are emotional, ineffable, divorced from practical constraints or logic.
So hereâ€™s hoping for a less whiny and more productive 2010. And hereâ€™s hoping that EVERYONE has a better year and even better years ahead!

Reality is there are 24 hours in the day, and they, along with the customer contract, the company, the family, and the life that gets in the way, take a lot out of me. I'm but a man...Shocker, I know.
This weekend I invited and asked Tom Harris, Joe G., Pete Paraska, Doug Carrow, and Glenn McCoy to come out and lend a hand... Now were getting the largest snow storm that has ever hit the east coast.
So I'll push on and hope to reschedule for January. Here's the reality: I have two months to get the Zcar done, the Miata sorted with a new cage, and the porsche fitted with a new seat and other new hardware. Reality is I'll focus on the cars I can IMMEDIATELY drive and IMMEDIATELY have my kids drive. Beyond that, everything else is noise.
We'll get it done, but it might not be in Feb.

11 years ago I started in on a V8 Zcar and made a little bit of a name... And then life happened. First, I made a great car, and enjoyed it. Then I met others, thru this board, who had greater talent and made greater cars... Bad move.. I started wanting my car to be like theirs...
Years passed, and that car went south to North Carolina...I got distracted making control arms and selling them. That was a rude awakening... Vendors hated me because I was cheaper than them... Some members hated me because I wasn't cheap enough. I began to hate Zcars because, well all I did was trip around mine while I made parts for other peoples cars... And then I bought another "type" of car...
December 2003 I bought a Corvette. 1999 model with way to many miles on it for way to little... It still surved a great purpose. I started tracking again... A fair amount.
As time passes, we started a company that has become very successful. We sold our other house, along with that Corvette, and moved to a great home in the country on 5 acres in the woods, with no pesky neighbors. We also bought a cool BMW that wasn't cool enough for trackng, and sold it 6 months later, replacing it with one of my dream cars, a highly modified Porsche 911 turbo.
This car was and still is simply amazing to me, and everyone who has sat a butt in it. In the process of owning and enjoying this car, and posting about it here, I have created so many enemies that I've pretty much alienated myself here on HybridZ, [pretty much forcing me to resign as administrator of this board last fall. My friends know the truth. My foes? they can rott in hell, and I'll gladly tell them my feelings if we ever meet face to face, bank on it.
In the process of the last four years I've learned a lot about myself. I've learned a lot more about cars, and even more still about running a business. While others have come and gone, we've kept on keeping on. We are still managing to grow, even in these tough economic times. Then again, we're not selling doggie doors on the internet or driving semi trucks for companies for pennies on the dollar. We've managed to keep our overhead reasonable, our goals within reach, and our professional partnerships ahead of the mark.
On the car front we're sooo fortunate. I've managed to buy another car to continue learning, and more importantly, teaching others in (yes I'm now an instructor, meeting another of my personal life goals) and I've managed to convince my two sons into buying Miatas as well. We're so wrapped up in this Miata thing that we're most likely going to race a Spec miata in an endurance series...
Driving this little car has given me cause for concern with my Zcar. I haven't driven one in a long time, and with 400+WHP on tap, and no driving aids, it will be a handful. The miata has proven to be the most difficult car I've tracked in the last 10 years. It is soooo hard to manage your momentum while modulating braking at 10/10ths.
So we're getting close to unwrapping the Zcar for the masses... I'm looking forward to the day when I can run many fast laps around VIR. I'm sure this journey is far from over...
