  1. Good point. The hole near the distributor is loose fit so the spindle shaft may wobble if the distributor removed. The spindle end should be supported by more complicated structure of blanking plug than I thought. If not, the spindle shaft might fail suddenly at high rpm then no oil pressure. Also, cutting the spindle shaft just above the tight hole is good insurance. I will be with distributor just as shaft support for a while and waiting further suggestions Regards, Kazu
  2. I'll take pics if someone needs for reference. Regards, Kazu
  3. I got them today. I supposed Viper caliper is brembo by its shape. Actually, they have casted brembo logo. But as you stated, they are low performance I guess 2000 Cobra R has similar calipers. The dimentions: width 6.1 length 10 mounting point width 3.9, holes have no threads pistons 1.45/1.35 rotor thicknes 1.2, may be I asked the seller the rotor dimentions, but rotors were sold before measuring by micrometer. Diameter is roughly 13. I am surprized the pistons are so small. The dimentions may not be sufficient for such heavy cars, but enough for my 240z Regards, Kazu
  4. To be honest, all I have are drill press with some endmill bits and Dremel. It took almost all day to make these brackets because I cut them out by drilling hundreds of small holes Regards, Kazu
  5. Distributorless system requires the sensor which detects the crank angle. DTA (and most of OEM EFI) use teethed wheel with missing tooth (or teeth) and magnet sensor. I made a sensor bracket which is bolted on the front cover. Then the wheel was placed on the front side of the crank pulley. 240z pulley was better because it is a bit smaller than the wheel (about 130mm O.D. ) and it has two tapped holes which can be used for the wheel mounting. pics of bracket cut by my own CNC machine I am tired programming my CNC machine , so the freeze plug idea came out. The soft is easily understood, better than time confusing EP-ROM programing or SDS, however, I don't have other EFI systems, so I don't know. I have not installed fuel injection system yet, so the complete impression of the soft will be placed later. Regards, Kazu -- 71z DTA P8 Pro, ignition only right now
  6. I replaced entire ignition system of L28. Now the car is running with Ford V6 coil pack. So I don't need the distributor. How can I plug the hole the distributor fitted? I think a freeze plug may work. Did anyone do this? Regards, Kazu -- 71z DTA P8Pro but ignition only right now
  7. OK, I'll ask seller the dimention of the rotor. Thanks, Kazu
  8. was $225 buy it now for calipers and rotors, taken from 2000 Viper, replaced by racing Brembo combo. I've been watching the big brakes at the reasonable price... Kazu
  9. I found Viper brakes at ebay today, said buy it now then clicked on it. I'll do some measurement, may be next week. Later, Kazu
  10. As you can see, the intake is located on the head of this tall engine and the oil pan cannot be clear the rack and pinion of the early z. Kazu
  11. Sorry, I put my post twice. And you have a custom clutch to match the input shaft spline of the Quaife box, right? I bought my P8Pro 6 months ago and it is still in my room. There were many things to put it but I don't have my own garage. I've already put crank angle sensor and teeth wheel. So the ignition test can be done and it worked. Now I am planing to put an idle control valve. Regards, Kazu
  12. Does it need a bellhousing modified? BTW I also have a P8Pro. Regards, Kazu
  13. Does it need a bellhousing modified? BTW I also have a P8Pro. Regards, Kazu
  14. I've heard that it has a lot of torque at low range. It wasn't WOT until 3,500 rpm, IMO. Kazu
  15. This might be off topic, pparaska, this is the typical power curve of MILD L3.1 (non turbo) in Japan: 260 RWP @ 6,500rpm. The cam has 300 duration but low .34 lift so they call it a mild cam and the car is very streetable with 100 RON gas. Even though its low lift, the valve springs of this engine were too stiff so the valve seats were eaten... There are more radical L3.1s on street cars in that country. LD28 crank is believed to be broken just above 8,500 rpm. Dragrace guys do no preparation of the crank and just replace it as a pair of socks when it is broken. 16. I'm looking for cleaner for aluminium cylinder head. There would be a kind of powder to be dissolved into warm water and then the head is soaked into the solution for a while. Where to buy? Regards, Kazu
  17. The race-prepared normal crank would help a little but I rather go the ATI Super Damper with normal crank. Race crank with normal damper does'nt make sense but I don't know it is legal at the competition of SCCA or others. With the ATI damper, the mass will be located more close to the front cover and the polley will be located on the front side of the damper. This design would be better than that of the Nissan Motorsports which has the pulley on the backside of the damper. Kazu
  18. Drysump, slant-mounted L28 (as Electramotive's 280zx turbo), intercooler, T5 Garrett, stainless steel exhaust manifold, HKS 6-speed, 2-stage injection (2 injectors per cylinder), 6 IR TBs, good brakes, suspension, tires/wheels onto sleeper, stone stock 240z exterior Kazu
  19. I bought my 240z about a year ago. I bought many performance parts until now, but most of them still stay in my room. The car was good running condition, however, it is more than 30 years old. If you drive the car as transportation I recommend a 280zx alternator and H4 halogen headlights with relay at first. Second, adding some Dynamat is great improovement for comfort. Now It's the time to put aluminium radiator with twin electric fans, TWM throttle bodies and EFI system Kazu
  20. I'm not sure but it seems that L20A engine (of Fairlady Z) had E30 head in early production.
  21. I did a long research about aftermarket ECUs, then I picked up a DTA P8PRO. Now I'm going to set a crank position sensor and a teeth wheel on my L28.

  23. I took some pictures at NY motor show because Vortec is the base engine of the hillclimb race car which ran fastest at last year's Pikes Peak. I read an article on GRM, it reaches around 600hp. http://home.earthlink.net/~kazuhix/images/vortec1.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~kazuhix/images/vortec2.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~kazuhix/images/vortec3.jpg http://home.earthlink.net/~kazuhix/images/vortec4.jpg

    BMW

Hi, All. I am new on this forum. I recently bought a 240z here in NYC, and have a '87 BMW 325iX race car, with euro high compression pistons, in JAPAN. I also be thinking about the swap. BMW inline 6s are great at high RPM and my iX is faster than my 240z with L28 dual Weber, inspite of the additional 400lb. Among the BMW small-six (M20), only iX (AWD) and Z1 engine whould suit on the 240z front member, because they have rear-sump oilpan. Newer twincam engines also have rear-sump oilpan. So you can put an expensive E46-M3's S54 engine (around 320ps?) on your z. I think S54 is the second best normal aspiration inline 6 in the world. (Best engine would be TVR's steel-block engine.) Good news for DATSUN guys is that the modified L3.1s in Japan make more HP than stock S54.
