  1. actually the stock manifold fits but its very close. the stock alternator ont he other hand doesnt fit. it will hit the hood. if you look at the first pictures youll see i modified the bracket so it swings the alternator further out and down. it fits now with no problem. funny thing is, i took all this time and effort into getting the stock 5.3 intake to fit but now i think im gunna go with the ls1 intake.
  2. yeap, thats what i ment. im not sure what you mean by ems. if you mean engine managemtn, the computer is out of a 2002 trans am and the harness is cut down harness out of a silverado. i plan on using a t56 even though the harness i have is for an auto.
  3. i would goto: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/tech_center/turbo_tech101.html they have a ton of basic to advanced info thats easy to understand.
  4. my goal is 500 reliable hp because i want to get decent gas milage (like 20-25 mpg hwy) which with 44 injectors should be possible. im sure ill get bit by the hp bug and want more latter though (that damn hp bug!) i base this on the fact that there are people over on the performance truck forums who are getting 18mpg with 9000 lbs trucks and auto transmissions. oh btw its a Garrett GT4082 turbo.
  5. i already thought of that, here are some picture of the bracket i made to support the turbo. it can hold the turbo on its own with no problem. i am considering adding a stainless steel flex joint to deal with heat expantion. as for the intercooler piping, i think im gunna clock the turbo so the outlet is facing forward and slightly down so i can run the tubing under the front cross member. its gunna be trick but im not worried. i have already gone ahead and tapped the oil cap above the oil filter and will be using that to supply oil to the turbo. i may also put a t on that for a oil pressure sender if i dont run it off the factory location. thanks for the comments!
  6. iv test fit eveything, theres gunna be like 1/2 to 1 inch between the radiator and the turbo but it fits, heres a picture from the test fit. nope, but thats a really good idea. i do have some vbands on the way which will alot me to take apart the system pretty easly.
  7. well got some more work done today but still waiting for a some v band flanges so i tacked the downpipe on. i already pressure tested the left side and it looks good. once i finish the right side ill presure test that, then heat black heat wrap iwill cover the entire system.
  8. here some work i got done today, still no ls1 flanges though...
  9. and about the radiator, its gunna be tight, but it should all work out. that bar you see in the picture will be removed so the radiator can drop in.
  10. i was considering a plate type mount but im really not shooting for that much hp (only around 475-600 ). also im not a huge fan of solid mount engines. i can see why you'd think thats a corvette bracket. it does look very similar. its acutally a truck bracked with the bottom hacked off and modified to put the alternator further out. today the pipes i needed to move ahead came but still no ls1 flanges . i had some progress on the main pipes but not much. ill make sure to post pictures as soon as its finished or some showing the progress later.
  11. I tried a number of configuration before I came to the conclusion that there was really no easy was out. Either way I set it up there will be some compromises. The problem with mounting it the other way is the steering shaft. Keep in mind the down pipe is 3.5 inches. Threes just no way to dodge both the motor mount and the steering shaft. But even on the other side there are some issues, mainly the starter. Luckily it wont be too difficult to run the pipe around that. So really it came down to running it the other way and using just a dump or running the pipe all the way to the tail which is what I preferred. The turbo is a garret gt40 with the 82 mm wheel. I got it from a friend for about 300 because it was in bad need of a rebuild.
  12. $1200 is a little pricey for a 130k lq4, imo
  13. well i got the t4 flange that i had been waiting for today so i went ahead and fabbed up a bracket to hold the turbo. im looking good on space although it will be tight. tomarrow the tubing i ordered will be here and hopefully so will the ls1 flanges so i can start on the exhaust system.
  14. thanks! that is exactly what i was looking for.
  15. yeah i just want to powdercoat my intake pipes.
  16. i know i heard it here somewhere but i cant find it anymore. anyone doing thier own powdercoating with an old oven? a friend of mine has a uncle who owns an appliance shop and throws away old ovens by the dozens, not cause they dont work, just cause they have an outdated look. anyone know if it possible to make your own powdercoating oven? or did i just imagine seeing a thread somewhere?
  17. what does the plug on the back of the alternator do(not the battery cable) ? i have a simplfied wiring harness for my car but i want to use a smaller alternator, not the one thats used on the ls1. can i just not use this plug? my guess is its just for the battery light in the dash.
  18. i didnt read the entire thread but heres my input. name brand wastegates are just to expensive imo. i plan on getting a cheap knock off. as for the bov, either way i think youll be fine. as for turbo....NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER buy a cheap knock off. Unless its so cheap and you dont care about splitting the cold side in a week.
  19. although in the pictures it looks like they alternator might hit the turbo, i asure you it wont. the way i plan on running the belt there should be a good amount of clearence so the belt doesnt get fried. with the power steering pump out of the way and the bracket cut i should have plenty of space for the drives side header. the passengers side will be a little trickier but its looking good. the cold side and center section will have to be reclocked because right now the center section is up side down. i havent gotten the turbo flange yet (of corse ups says it will be here the day after i have to be back at school) but these picturs should help you understand how im gunna set everything up.
  20. i noticed that yesterday. its likely that ill have to hack off the pass. side wing to route the exhuast. the down pipe is 3.5 inches so im gunna have a hell of a time getting it all to fit. VinhZXT: anytime you wana come check it out just drop me a line, i actaully go to school at shippensburg university which is about 2 hours west of you.
  21. i pretty sure you can but i was talking to a friend who has a donzi with a 350 small block. he told me boats use a diffrent cam. also the cooling system is alittle bit diffrent. instead of a radiator, theres a box the sea water is pumped into and it cools the engine coolant which is sealed from the sea water. hope that helps
