I know sounds wrong but I got it out of "Datsun/Nissan sports car buyers guide" by John Matras. On pg. 49 On pg 58 it says 79 280zx curb weight 2825 lbs.

    wheelbase 91.3

    BPH @RPM 135 @ 5,200

    Torque @rpm 144 @ 4,400rpm

    0-60 mph 9.2 sec

    1/4 mile 17.2 sec.

    top speed 121 mph

    fuel enconomy 22mpg

so according to road and track magizine (what he got the information from the zx is 50lbs lighter than the 280z.

But also it says on pg. 60. The 1981 280zx Turbo weight was 2,995

    BPH 180 @ 5,600rpm

    0-60 mph 7.4 sec.

    1/4 mile 15.6 sec.

    top speed 129

    fuel enconomy 20 mpg

  2. You tell'em Tomahawk! :D

I can confirm the accuracy of that statement. As long as you remember to include the "WOW" factor. For example HP increases after a car wash or wax job! 2thumbs.gif

    On a serious note;

    BPH@RPM 149@5,600

    Torque @ RPM 163 @ 4,400

    6/75 Road and Track:

    0-60 MPH 9.4 sec.

    1/4 mile 17.3 sec.

    top speed 119

    fuel economy 19.5

    curb weight 2,875

    wheelbase 90.7

Thanks for the info. I read Max Boost awhile back. Just don't know what all the t-3 or 4 mean. I do remember Corky talking about larger turbo running alot cooler. Just didn't put it together at the time since I wasn't thinking about an upgrade.

I will call up a few places and see what they reccomend if and when my turbo does truly die. Heck she is running alot better since I redialed in my AFM. Hope more improvement with the AFPR I am ordering (should come in next week).

Question; What did you pay for your new turbo from Majestic?

  4. Boy Tony! I just get excited reading your post and all those goodies you reccomended to Scotty! burnout.gif

    Hi Scotty!

I agree with Tony. If it works don't fix it. Heck you just rebuilt that baby last winter. I remember you really had alot of self control breaking her in right. The rest of the engine is all seated nice and cosey ready for whatever further abuse you will dish out with that future SDS 2thumbs.gif . Did you do a compression test on the other cylinders, before you tore her down?

I second that "get a better I/C" also. I'm still trying to shadetree mine. She runs better and has more power than I ever thought she would! I really missed not driving her for so long!

I should have a Aeromotive AFPR next week to see if I can lean her out during normal operations(with my stock computer cry2.gif ). We'll see.

Oh yea; Tony! last May I drove thru your neck of the woods. To visit my Mother in Northern CA.(via San Simeon; had to show my family a good time visiting Hearst Castle :D ) Traveling West on Hwy 58 from Bakersfield I must of counted about five Z cars parked outside and around Bakersfield!

Scotty, if you don't make out on your day job I bet you could get on with a pit crew at a racetrack. You got this engine repair down!!! cheers.gif

If my turbo does go out. I would like to try to go with a water cooled which I figure would mean a total replacement of my old one. If that is the case then hey go for an upgrade! (HA! more power b_hand.gif ).

Now I don't know what you have for upgrades to your car. I've got

    370cc injectors

    240SX TB

    1st gen DSM BOV

    2 1/4" piping going to a approx. 14 x 28 x 3" isuzu NPR I/c

    the 2 1/2" DP (we talked about :D )

    3" exaust

I really don't want to upgrade to much on the turbo to cause me to have to for example increase fuel to support said upgrade. Like the need to go with larger injectors or have to change to stand along engine computer to remove stock AFM to allow more air (SDS or Holly commander etc.)

For example what you said "T04b with stage 2 turbine wheel" Is all Greek to me. I gather from reading posts my stock turbo is a t-3 (don't know the brand). I read where people have installed larger wheels like a t-4 wheel to increase output and keep the same housing. Just don't want to do an overkill and don't have a clue what to look for or to ask for or where to buy such an upgrade. Oh yea Cody I sent you snailmail (two letters)

  6. Thanks for reply Doug. I guess once turbo starts to "whine" or "grind" better fix it or else expect alot more serious damage to rest of car.

Was also wondering cost wise as compared with future benefit.

What would be the best next step to take?

    1. rebuilding it myself (never have but willing to try).

    2. sending it out to be rebuild. If so where to send?

    3. Wondering if for the future benefit would it be cost effective to get an oil and watercooled turbo. I've heard that's the way to go for longevety? As compared to my stock turbo?

    4. Hey if changing to water/oil cooled would be a good idea. Then maybe the time to go with a minor upgrade that wouldn't cause major modifications to engine/exaust etc. Would be in order?

  7. If I remember right. The "voice box" is located behind rear shock pillar passenger side. You might get one out of an old zx and wire it. I believe the speaker and everything is in it. Its just a black plastic box.

I got a kick out of mine. Before the girl in the box "passed away" totally. She was sick for a long time. She sounded like she was in s l o w m o t i o n!!!!! People would get in the car; hear her and we couldn't stop laughing!

  8. I remember the chevy had a sleeve that you could put on the harmonic balancer. When the front seal wore a groove in it. Which caused an oileak.

Does anyone know if there is such a sleeve that can be used for the L28. That would slide over the worn spot on the harmonic balancer/pulley?

If so where I can buy one?

  9. See how long I've been thinking about it :D . I wanted to see how my car ran after I did all the modifications. Finally finished the mods last week (been a long time w/o my Z). Runs great but rich! So now is the time to buy!!!!!!Chargeeeeeee it!!!!!!!

  10. I just installed the 4 wire O2 sensor. It was originally for a 1992 Dodge Shadow. Works great! Seems more sensitive than my single wire. It had one black wire which was signal. one grey wire-ground tied directly to battery. two white wires for the heater. I tied one of the white to my keyed positive side. and I connected the black to my cars 02 sensor (also to my A/F gauge signal)that goes to computer. Then I connected the other white wire and the grey wire to my ground to battery along with my A/F gauge ground. I'm sure my readings may still not be as good as a wide band 02. But for me I know it was $40 well spent! :D

  11. Nathan

I'm going to order one tomarrow. My Z is running pig rich and heck I've thought about it long enough!

In fact I've been planning to buy an fpr ever since I installed those 370 injectors. I waited to see if better exaust, larger TB,I/C would help. It did but I really want to see if I can lean her out a bit at normal operation and still keep the increase fuel at wot.

  12. Mudge

After you mentioned that! dam! I guess "..I'm proud to be an okie from...Oklahoma" (thank you Meral Haggard; sure hope you didn't hear me sing that, that can cause loss of hearing malebitchslap.gif . Now I understand your desire for autocross. Your near my old stomping grounds. I used to drive old La Honda, Skyline Blvd. All over those mountains! (Nearly killed myself more than once during the late sixties!). Agreed; If your "Camaro was an early model those earlier higher compression engines really suffer with crappy gas!

  13. Thanks for the input Nathan!

You are verifying what I was thinking concerning octane and how to; and what to do to benefit from it. :D I wish I could remember what amount of octane pump gas contained back in 1981/83? To maybe guesstimate what ignition curve z was dialed in at factory to benefit from the highest amount of octane available. So I can figure what would be overkill by using to much octane. I know, I know SDS or what you have (upgraded with a 300zx computer) would be easier but I'm still trying to go farthest with cheapest investment (you know I'm a follower of ScottyMiz coollook.gif ).

Ya, I figured my $35 Dawes booster was creepin! (you get what you pay for). One more reason for keeping POV.

Concerning POV. Thanks for suggestion. I do remember in the 240z site I obtained info. on modding POV in the first place. He talked about a larger spring. Further I didn't think about the possibility of restricting POV flow by using to many washers (which makes alot of sense; I'm currently at three thin ones).

  14. I hear you Mudge. I was born in San Jose and raised in Palo Alto. My mother still lives around Watsonville. Right currently in Oklahoma. gas 93 octane is around $1.25 per gallon. I guess that's another benefit of "Homebrew 2thumbs.gif (although I'm still searching for more information with regards to that). I can only guess what it is in the Bay area (what $1.60?). I was lucky thanks to Shane I bought his NPR I/C for I think around $150 (don't remember I'd slept since then smile.gif ).

If you read my signature you see I too would also like to install my Lt1 in my 240Z. But first I'm really having a blast working on this 280zxt (while gaining experience and courage!) 2thumbs.gif .

BTW saw a turbo on E-bay last night for around $500 (don't know what it is now). I think it is in Southern CA.
