  1. Don't rule out KOA camping cabins they are clean, quiet, cheap. Just bring sheets and blankets. When I travel to SF from Watsonville I would make it a day trip. If you need to overnite it I would reccomend stay in surrounding area; cheaper as compaired to Downtown SF.

Traveling up Hwy 1 if she hasen't seen Hearst castle its worth it. Although sounds like you will be taking off from Monterey (don't backtrack). Remember Hwy 1 is winding and after about 90 miles (San Simeon to Carmel) she may be real tired or carsick like my wife when I take her. Take it from experience don't try to see everything! Heck North or Monterey (Santa Cruz, Eureka Canyon rd. into the mountains, Half Moon Bay, etc.).

Yea I know TX traveling. Since I live in OK just remember choose your times entering and exiting places like SF don't travel 7am-9am or 3:30 to 7Pm (weekends preferrable). Or you will experience another Houston or Dallas/Ft. Worth at rush hour!!!

  2. Thanks for the post Racer

You listed one of the posts I was looking for!

I talked a bit with a guy at Sherwin Williams, he mentioned as a first time painter use Acrilic Enamel its more forgiving. You don't need to go bare metal just lightly sand the original paint and that's the best primer. If need to go bare metal on dents etc. Spray bare metal with acid etch (if smaller than a coffee lid can use spray can type acid etch) then go with a primer sealer like E2A28 jet seal.

For the nose of my son's 70 firebird use a V6V299 flex agent (since those noses are plastic).

Racer what are some of the names of the "cheap import" HVLP gravity feed sprayguns with the 1.3 or 1.5 nozzel you use? Also what is a decent all around HVLP gun you would reccomend?

Oh yea its been a long weekend! Finally decided on a good compressor. I bought a Max Air 60 gallon 5 hp. 3 cylinder 18.5 CFM @ 100psi. 230 volt single stage. Price $629.

I knew that if I didn't do it right the first time it would always haunt me. You know like putting a 4 cylinder in a Z car  It will get you to point B from point A but may have to wait awhile! Same with the Compressor!

So I went all out. The max air I bought at Steve's wholesale looked like the best bang for the buck.

  3. Guys

    Its a two day sale; today is last day;

    "central pneumatic"

    oil lubricated for long life

4 1/2 peak hp etc. etc. as I mentioned above...

Its Lot # 47065 originally $199.99 on sale $169.99 Now $129.99 (talk about a come on  ) But if it doesn't do what I need not worth it!

Believe me it won't sit and collect dust!

I've bought the cheap harbor freight tools 17 1/2 body sander looks like 5 cfm @ 90psi (so may have to wait a little for tank to recharge) looks like my max usage will be the 6" dual action sander rated at 16cfm 0.45m/min.(don't know what that means figure 16 cfm @ 90psi which is really high usage!).

I could possibly even tie my old compressor together with this new one when operating the 6" sander.

I really want to make sure it will take care of a HVLP spraygun. Talking to a guy he says you need a consistent 50psi (don't know the cfm of a spraygun but I think at that low press. it will do the job.

Oh yea I called the guy today he said he will extend sale till monday before noon. As I said before if it won't do job no need to buy it just wait. Except I really don't want to pay $750 for a compressor. Currently my son and I are trying our luck at bodywork on his 70 firebird. Then spray acid etch on bare metal then primer then paint. In future I'll be painting my other cars along with bodywork over the years.

  4. At Harbor freight they are selling a no-name brand (their in-house brand) air compressor for $129.99 specks as follows:

    120volt 60Hz. 4.5 Hp 21 gallon 2 capacitor motor operates ;

    at 115psi 4.0scfm delivered 3.2 cfm

    at 90psi 4.4scfm delivered 3.5 cfm

    at 40psi 11.1scfm delivered 8.8 cfm

I know "you get what you pay for". Also I haven't checked around very much to get educated on prices of a good air compressor that would run body and paint tools without having to wait for the tank to recharge!

I have an old campbell hausfield 1 1/2 hp looks about a 10 or 15 gallon that really doesn't cut it when it comes to running my tools.

So thought at $129.99 this could do the job.

What do you guys think? Any other reccomendations or input would help!

  5. I bought the GSL 392 with the install kit from "importpower" a few weeks back. Cost total of $135 delivered. So $100 with fittings delivered sounds like a good deal if you can get it for that.

It mounted up fine except on the intake side I needed to buy a 90 degree bend brass fitting and on the outlet needed a 45 degree bend brass fitting (nether was included). I don't have fuel pump fade using my 370's at 12 psi so upped the boost to around 15psi runs good with 93 octane. Could possibly go higher.

  6. Randy sad to hear on your ECM's . Talk to your salvage yard and see if you can get a discount by buying ECM's in volume (you know cheaper by the dozen). Yea! That's a bad joke at a time like this  .

I remember when I washed my engine and my TPS got wet engine cut out around 1800. Then on my N/A 78 280Z I had a problem where she would cut out completely at 4000 rpm. Which I'm still trying to figure out.

Lockjaw, it could be that my tack is off. It really doesn't matter either way. I know exactly the location on MY tack that she would cut me off! Then I'd have to go home and take a COLD shower! :) Just a little above 6000 that I don't venture beyond!!! Real easy in 1 and 2nd gear to "hit the wall!"

  7. If you don't remember when you last replaced your fuel filter. Might be time to replace it. At 18 dollars cheap insurance :D . You can do alot of upgrades but restricted fuel filter can nullify them!

From my experience after you install your I/C and DP (don't forget 3" exaust. I was running around 11 to 12 psi. (at 93 octane) Don't think fuel pump upgrade will be needed YET!!!!! Now when you install larger injectors or use a RRFPR on stock injectors you may need to upgrade the pump.

An adjustable fuel press. reg. Is always good to fine tune but as Len says you will get 11 to 12 psi without it the direction your going After I/C, DP and exaust.

  8. Walbro ext. 255 L/Hr. High press. GSL-392

Sure looks like the best bang for the buck! That's the way I'll go! Will buy fittings at time of purchase.

Although I don't have a clue on what my Hp is. I do know driving down the road with my radio on. My car has gotta be the fastest coolest car around!!! :D

Due to that fact before I buy I plan to rewire fuel pump with at least 12 gauge and see what happens. In that way I could possibly increase boost a bit more without starving engine of fuel using my old pump. I guess I would like to push the most boost using my 370's. If fuel pump can't support the 370's then GSL-392 here we come. I would want to rewire anyway to push the amps and max. the volts to the new GSL-392 when I do buy it.

Hey thanks alot for all the input guys! You pointed me in the right direction.

  9. Hmmmmm

I'm running stock z FPR psi of 38psi. If I say go max of 16 to 18psi boost. That's 56psi. Or if I decided moderatly push my injectors and increase base pressure to 40 or 43psi then that would mean I would need fuel pressure support of around 61psi. I need to really do some checking also. Can't afford to do this twice!

I may never need 61psi fuel pressure but hey as we all know times change.

By the way how do you plan on obtaining your Porsche pump? Salvage yard? Approx. price?

    Thanks

  10. Hi

    I've got a 83 280 zxt stock engine, NPR I/C, 240TB,370 injectors, 2 1/2 into 3" DP, Aeromotive FPR, stock EMS.

I ran my fuel press. gauge in the cab to ck press at boost. At 12 to 13 PSI boost Press ran about 50lbs. then slowly lowered to about say 46psi. So may try running larger guage wire to fuel pump. But really I am just posponing the enevitable. A higher volume fuel pump. SO

I'm about to buy a MSD-2225 fuel pump (best place I found was summit for $76.99 runs up to 500 hp. thanks for the idea Sleeper!) and was wondering if its best to remove the old existing fuel pump altogether? Or hopefully just tie into fuel line after old fuel pump and I guess mount on frame rail? Also would it work OK with my FPR?

Any other ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks Guys

  11. Hi Guys

I have the same "lope" like a hot cam. I have a NPR I/C. I've tried nearly everything. It even ran crappy when cold. I wired a switch to dissconnect my engine temp sensor (so it will run rich until warm) until it warmed up(then clicked it back in line after it warmed up). You might play with your timing a bit. Datsun book says to start with 24 degrees BTDC. When I turned it to around 30 degrees it ran better. Now I'm replacing my injector connectors to see how that may help. But I've got a lope too currently!

Your car looks real good Scotty!

  12. Just returned from salvage yard. Bought the two speedTaurus fan. Three wires black (figure ground), brown with yellow stripe (maybe high speed)and brown with orange stripe (maybe low speed). It came off an 89 Taurus station wagon. Looks like the two speeds came off the 3.8 engines as compaired to the 3 liter (possibly uses one speed).

When I called they wanted $75, so wasen't planning to buy. Just look. When I found one I asked the guy in the field he said $35. So hey went for it. The guy in the office was real busy so volinteered to remove it for him.

When I returned with the fan he priced it to me for $54.19 since I removed it? Guy in the field and guy in office needs to get their ducks in a row!!!!!

Bought it anyway because after measuring it was 20 1/2" wide 16" tall and 4" thick!

I think I can make it work. I've got about 1/4" to play with.

    Thanks guys
