    m30 diff

I have a 1990 m30 diff, i have read up on it a little, i know it is a 3.9:1 ratio, and is beefy. I also read that it has an abs sensor on the snout. the infiniti site (f31club) says it is in the yoke. could i swap the yoke off of a 79 r200 onto the infiniti diff? my diff is whining pretty bad, and recently developed a clunk, i think my rear is toast. it would be nice to just swap the rear out from under the infiniti, I had planned on swapping the rear ends this winter, but I dont really want to have to get a new drive shaft. so the question i suppose is can I swap just the yoke on the differential, or am I going to have to get a new drive shaft? I know the rears are different, I was liking the idea of cvs instead of u-joints. a lot less maintenance. also, I know the infiniti is a lot more rare than datsuns, but i will post my progress and pics of rear end swap come winter. snow starts flying, datsun takes a nap.
  2. the exhaust is solid, as I stated in my first post. the po had drove the car for a while with a leaking exhaust manifold gasket, caused by a broken stud. I replaced the gasket and had to have the manifold milled because the gasses had eaten the manifold at that port. i replaced both the front and rear stud with a larger one to hopefully prevent the same thing from happening again. I also replaced the manifold to downpipe gasket. my exhaust is sound, runs allt he way out the back, no leaks. and i dont have a cat. I believe my backfire is caused by excessive intake vacuum when i go from full throttle to no throttle. I also could possibly have a burnt valve from the previous exhaust leak, I havent done a compression test yet, but i believe i will find evidence that would support my theory.
  3. Boost controlled deceleration device. it is a throttle bypass valve that reduces intake vacuum when you let off the throttle. its what makes your idle stick at around 1500 when you are coming to a stop, it also helps keep your rpms up when you let off the throttle quickly, like when you come off a corner. I have actually kinda got used to driving it, and it doesnt backfire very often anymore. I just have to shift it quicker when i rag on it. my car is a 79 n/a with a very open exhaust, so i think that might contribute to the backfires too, almost no backpressure.
  4. mine were rusted in nice and tight, took off the clips, and sprayed them with pb for a week, still couldnt beat them out. went through the log book i got with the car, and couldnt find any replacement of the u-joints. im assuming they were the originals from 1979. the car also sat for almost ten years before i could work on it. after struggling with the drivers side for so long, i just cut them out of the pass side. took about 15 mins. then hit them with a 3 lb mini sledge, came right out, didnt even have to pb them, i think the heat helped. i also heated up the yokes first on the drivers side, to no avail. next time they should come out a lot easier i imagine.
  5. I took off the bcdd valve a couple of days ago, the car runs much better now, no more bouncing idle, much better driveability, feels like it has more power(could be just me) but when i open it up, it has backfired a couple of times on shifting. usually going from 2nd to third from full throttle to no throttle, coming off of corners and such. i was wondering if my timing might be a little thrown off by a difference in timing. i also has a bad exhaust manifold gasket when i bought the car, and the po had been driving it like that for a while. maybe my backfire is caused by a burnt valve??? i could find that out by doing a compression test right?? what kind of reading would a burnt valve cause?? other than the backfire on shifting, the car runs awsome, lots of power, and no other issues at low speeds, part throttle, or other driving. ive replaced all my vacuum lines, all my fuel lines, and run 93 octane, with booster/cleaner most of the time. p.s. i replaced the exhaust gasket too, and the car has a cold air intake, and a open/one glasspack 2.25 exhaust, no cat.
  6. what about just cutting the crosses out? worked good for me, a lot better than trying to cut one of the caps out, i dont think the heat would affect the yokes any more than straight up heating the yokes with the torch. i havent seen any difference in mine, no shakes or anything, no looseing after several full throttle burnouts, rearend is a lot nicer with new u-joints too.
  7. here are a couple pics from a test fitment, the engine mounts from the vg30 are still in place, and the ones on the sbc are still there, it will sit much lower with custom mounts, i just wanted to see if it would fit side to side and front to back, also one of the engine bay, you can kinda see how far the steering shaft sticks into the engine bay, does this look like the 300z engine bay?
  8. Has anyone ever bought anything from racespages.com? I just stumbled across their site and the have lots of parts for my 280zx, didnt look around a whole lot for older z's(I dont have one) but the prices were very reasonable and they had all kinds of crap, I was just wondering if anyone had shopped from there, and how the customer service was.
  9. I checked all 6 plugs in my 280zx, ive run them for maybe 50 miles, they are barely starting to brown. how long will they run? they are platinum 2's, and were free, so i dont want to run out and buy a brand new set of plugs, as of now the car runs great, havent looked into tuning the car beyond making sure the timing was set to factory standards, this is a stock daily driver other than a cheap fab cold air intake and making the exhaust come out the drivers side instead of the passenger side
  10. bump and update on two year old post. test fit the 350 in the m30, it fits pretty tight, with van acc. on the front of the motor I have about 3 inches between the waterpump pulley and the rad. support. I have lots of room on the sides between the strut towers, but the drivers side exhaust manifold and the steering shaft share the same space. does anyone know of a factory exhaust manifold or a set of headers that will fit? I looked at the jags that run headers for the 280zx, do you think those will work? I will post pics later. gonna have to use an electric fan and put it on the outside in front of the radiator.
  11. I bought a piece of plastic flex tubing, and a big ass filter, dropped the filter in front of radiator, and put a piece of plastic on one side, the flex tubing makes it s i can tuck the filter behind the plastic if it starts raining, so idont have to worry about sucking in water, looks ghetto, but works great, and cost me a total of $30, 10 for the pipe and 20 for the filter.
  12. when i bought my zx it had an obvious exhaust leak, it was loudest right under the hood, turns out a stud had broke off the exhaust manifold and the gasket had been eaten away by the exhaust gasses. I bought the car from a guy that didnt really know anything about cars, and had been driving the car like that for a couple of years, ended up having to get the manifold milled down because the front port had been corroded/eroded by the exhausr gasses. big pain in the ass. got the car back together now, and it doesnt seem to have a burnt valve, but it think i got lucky there. if the sound i louder out from under the hood than anywhere else, make sure you check the underhood gaskets too, save you some headwork.
  13. gap is the same too, ive always had good luck with the bosch plugs, i run them in all of my vehicles, 82 delta 88, 92 s10, 89f250, 2000 impala, and of course the 79 280zx now.
  14. been here a few years, didnt post much spent all my time working, this last year i finally got to start to really work on my 79zx, love the car, love the way it drives, comfy, just went through the rear end got the front end parts in the garage, 118000 miles on the car bought it 5 years ago for $600. put a little work into it, got a lot more planned, isnt that always the way. some rust on it, rocker panels, some on the front of the framerails, got my work cut out for me, gonna keep my datsun datsun. no domestic v8 swap for this car. I like the design a little more than the big open mouth designs of the older models, and a lot more than the square later models, and cant afford a new 350 so this is what i got, looking to get about 250 hp out of it someday, but not right now, got a line on a couple of other z's, an 82 and a 77, and acouple of 300's, gonna see what i can do with mine.
  15. I recently aquired a 1990 infiniti m30, it came with new plugs and wires in it. the plugs were bosch platinums, had one of my guys who works at a parts store spend a while looking them up and the platinums out of the infiniti are the same heat and size as the ones out of the infiniti. the infiniti had the vg30e v6 in it, i scrapped the motor in favor of a v8 swap in the works, but put the plugs in my 79 datsun, worked like a charm, starts on the first crank every time. I just thought this would be helpful since there isnt a listing for the bosch plugs for my zx at autozone, dont know about other places. btw the nut size is different on the two plugs, but not the threads and seat.
  16. I just went through the rear end of my 79 zx, used all suspension techniques parts, all from autozone, i dont know how much i spent, but i cant imagine it was that much, summit has them too, not as a kit, all individual bushings, from what ive felt in my car the difference is phenominal compared to the stock rubber. make sure you lube the bushings real good the difference between a bushing set and a camber kit is offset bushings with a washer to change the camber of your wheels slightly, never used them, i'm going with the 80's big wheel in back thing, 225/60/16's in the back, 205/50 16's in the front
  17. bought my new pads at autozone, duralst gold, lifetime warranty, dont remember how much they were, but it wasnt much, the hard part was getting them in, even with the pistons all the way in its a tight fit, make sure you have the pistons all the way in.
  18. I just did the rear brakes on my 280zx, in the process I broke one of the caliper retainer clips/springs, I looked for hours all over the net and couldnt find a replacement. how important is that clip? the caliper sits in the bracket pretty tight with new pads and I dont think it willl be a problem, but it would be nice to have the clips in there again.
  19. a lot of rear disk brake calipers retract this way, autozone carries a rear disk brake compressing kit that turns the piston as well as pushes it in, makes the job much easier, it is in thier loan a tool selection, $50 deposit. I just went through the same thing with my 79 zx, waiting for a caliper seal kit to redo my rear calipers while they are off the car, these are by far the most involved disks I have dealt with so far.
  20. going to start tearing the rear end out from under the infiniti tomorrow, I like the bigger brakes, and the cv shafts. overrall width of the two cars is similar, just over 60 inches, but the rear suspension crossbember on the infiniti is about 4 inches wider, control arm mounting points are very close to the same width, and the control arms are set up almost identical, hoping the infiniti struts will lower my car 1-2", and be stiffer, given the weight difference of the two cars, maybe control rear end dive a little.
  21. thanks, I also found a beck arnley kit at napa 17.99
  22. If f/r proportioning valve is used, and rear brakes have been upgraded as well as the fronts, then the only other thing I could think of would be slotted and/or drilled rotors. But those would eat up pads pretty quick. And that's a pricey option for that setup, but if you can afford the kit to begin with I suppose that 's not really an issue
  23. I looked all over and I cant find a seal kit for a 79 280zx rear brake caliper, I took apart the calipers and the pistons are still in good shape, but I cant find new seals anywhere, I really hope someone can help me I have rebuilt the whole rear end of the car and the calipers are the last thing, I dont have the $100 apiece for new calipers, and dont have time to swap my m30 rear end yet, I just want to drive the car, I also busted one of the retaining clips that hold the caliper in the bracket, I cant find those either, please help me I miss my car.
