Personally, I have never liked that song, but that rendition was absolutely spectacular! Classic Jim Henson Muppets! Being 42, growing up with the Muppets on TV when we only got three channels and had to get off the couch to change channels, of course I love the Muppets. Muppet Treasure Island is one of my families all time favorite movies. (Our VHS copy of that movie is pert-neer wore out!) For Muppet fans, this video is EPIC! Thank you for sharing..

Do you have a service manual of any sort? i.e. Haynes manual? Have you looked through the online Z car EFI bible? If not, search this forum for "EFI bible". These 3 links cover the rest.. http://forums.hybridz.org/misc.php?do=cfrules http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=131518 http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=139501

1) New maf on a '78 Z?!? Which '78 maf are you talking about? Was this a new retrofit recently? 2) When did the EFI become known as maf, or vice versa? I must have missed that memo... Did it come out recently? Last week?

maf? What maf? Show me an '81 zx with a factory installed MAF!

The topic of why the 24 hour edit policy was originally put in place vs allowing members in that one section to edit their posts is still in discussion. Please bear with us and we will have an answer for you, just not sure how it long will take. -
Major bummer. Gorge winds right? Are the winds strongest during only certain season or is it all year round? (Thread moved)

Here is one example of the Datsun 4 lugs, (and stock Datsun R-200 diff and half shafts), having adequate strength for 750+ ft/lbs of dual quad, blown V-8 torque. Courtesy of JnJ drag racing

Interesting… do you mind if we input, discuss, etc? I love these sort of discussions.. I like the concept as seen from the piston for the swirl concept. Keep the valves angled to keep the flow “into†the chamber at an angle forcing the vortex. Manufacturing/casting would be quite complex with those ports above the chamber with coolant passages surrounding as much of the chamber as possible. Having twice the induction plumbing and exhaust plumbing could definitely offer some very intricate and aesthetically pleasing bundle of snakes on either side of the valve cover/s.

A 250 HP diesel makes more sense in my mind. Like you said, enough torque to tow a battle ship, would be a great work truck. I can't stop thinking about that second truck in the video with the Vortech style supercharger... That was the 4 cylinder right? I thought he said it got like 10 or so less MPG the 3 cylinder truck he drove off in?... Curious as to how much power?... The one he drove off in did sound cool in a farmer sorta way.

Struggling with which V-8 to go with?...
BRAAP replied to circinus's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Throwing this out in case you hadn't thought of it yet. How about finding a running donor vehicle for the initial conversion, which ever brand you would prefer in the long term, Chevy or Ford, as a test bed poewrtain to get the bugs ironed out of the V-8 of the conversion itself, (Ford-Mustang, Thunderbird/Cougar, or Chevy-Caprice, pickup, etc), while that is up and running and you are getting comfortable with and enjoying the mild V-8 conversion, be building the custom engine you really want. When that engine is done, most of the bugs should be ironed out of the conversion so you can then focus your efforts on tuning and dialing in the new plant. -
Thanks for the info.

Dave, Yes they are hardened. How, to what degree of hardness and to what depth, I do not know? (You actually filed one?!?! You are very patient. I tried once...) You should be able to remove that rocker and visually inspect the lash pad for abnormal wear, if it looks ok, you should be fine.
-
You are correct. For whatever distance you shim the cam, you should make up for it in lash pad thickness. As you found out, you have .005" discrepancy between tower shims and available Nissan lash pads, (Nissan is out of a few sizes as well, no indication of when or if they will be replenished). Here is another source for lash pads in .5mm, (.020" increments), vendor is a member here. http://www.zccjdm.com/catalog.php/azcarbum/dt43033/pd944870/KAMEARI__CHROMOLY_LASH_PADS. With stock cams, there is sooo much room for error on wipe pattern, .015 will be safe. After-market cams are generally more aggressive, as such will take up more of the available wiping surface area so it become more critical. The more radical the cam, the more critical it is. Verify where your wiping pattern is on your rockers before you added the shim. Make sure there is no abnormal wear. If wiping surface has any divots or heavy wear, any change to the wiping surface area, (shimming cam, changing lash pads, valve job, swapping rockers to different lobes), will quickly wear out the rocker and the cam lobe. If the wiping pad is in good overall condition, and if the wiping pattern is perfectly in the middle, you can go +.010" or +.020" lash pad and should be fine. If the wiping pattern is biased towards the "valve" side of the wiping pad, use the .010" lash pad. If the wiping pattern is biased towards the "adjuster/pivot" side of the wiping pad, use the .020" lash pad. Disclaimer Those guidelines will only work if the wiping pattern was properly set up for the cam in the first place, rocker wiping surface and cam lobes are in good serviceable condition, there is enough room to safely “shift†the wiping pattern across the pad either way .050†or so either way, and is not a replacement for verifying your cams wiping pattern is still "ok" after the shim and lash pad change. Hope that helps, Paul

Shade tree Hybrid conversion… Wife sent this video link to me today… http://blip.tv/file/1203702 I give the idea an A for effort, but a D- in execution. With 30-50 HP tractor engines, you are only getting 30-50 HP worth of performance and in a full size truck, that is almost scary! (one looked like it had a Vortech style super charger!) I do not doubt the MPG claims. I believe an efficient 30-50 HP gas engine in that same rig could deliver 30-40 MPG. 30-50 HP can only consume so much fuel in the first place, diesels are more efficient. Tractor Diesels aren't as efficient as auto diesels of comparable power, why not try one of those lower powered versions? Isuzu or Nissan four cylinder Diesel! Compromise comes in performance. Full size truck needs to be able to get out it’s own way, especially if you are using it as a full size truck to haul things, (that's why most people buy a full size truck, right?), out on the road where speeds above 50 MPH are required! 30-50, even 75-100 HP really isn't enough for a full size truck, especially if you want to use it as such! A good friend years back and Diesel Nissan 720 2wd pickup. He loved it, claimed 40+ MPG, but it wouldn't get out of its own way! I own a 3000 lb 32 HP John Deere diesel tractor, top speed is 35 MPH and it works to get to that speed. The last place I’d put that engine is under the hood of my wifes Suburban or my full size pickup.

Sean, You are welcome. For what its worth, you can use the '75-83 N/A AFM's. I am not 100% sure there wasn't a slight tune difference in the later 80+ AFM's, but for sure the '75-'78 will be direct replacement in functionality, '79 and '80 should also be the same. The earlier 280-Z cars had an extra switch that yours doesn't have or need, (in your AFM connector, there will be two empty connectors pins), but that wont affect your car/application. Hope that helps, Paul

Little update. Did a little 4th century style massaging in the tunnel of 20th century German engineering. Turned out Ok, not pretty but ok. "Massaging" was performed in an area not seen and it will get painted for protection. Overall the LSx powertrain is a nice fit and as most have found out, if you are not modifying the oil pan, cross member, or cutting sections out of the firewall, with the F-body oil pan there really is only a very small window this power train package will fit within. My latest mock up, I have established adequate clearances, trans output shaft is aimed directly at the diff input and is within .2 degrees, (2 tenths of a dregree) angularity up and down. Here are some shot of the latest mock up;
