  1. Hmm, I know BMW used to use Getrag transmissions in the earlier cars, as well I've noticed that GM started advertising the Getrags in the sunfires a year or two ago. Does anyone know if BMW actually owns Getrag? I have a feeling they don't. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo

    sds orders

Just for clarification, can someone verify for me that the stock turbo injectors are high impedence? Order is sent, just wanted to make sure I had that correct. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo

    SDS is a Go!

I'll give SDS a call tomorrow to get the final outlines on the package I want, then contact Mike. Scottie, if you are out there could you post all the info on the package you bought? I am pretty sure I know what I want, but I might miss something. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  4. I think the factory differences are listed in some other threads here, probably in the chassis forum. Basically the 280Z's have more meat to their frames than the 260Z's do, which in turn have a bit more meat than the 240Z's. However: If you start with a 240Z and add chassis stiffening to it, you should be able to exceed the overall stiffness of the 280Z with a lighter car. (roll cage is a good start!) I think the 280z's can be made to be around 2700lbs without extreme lightening. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  5. Wow, startling discoveries pete. I'm really interested in hearing about that ford fuel level sender swap thingy! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  6. So that all said, when and how do we get all this done and payed for? ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  7. Hey Scottie, I love that logo that you have in your signature over there. Nice stuff! I may just have to make something like that for myself. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  8. Perfect timing. My engine will be ready for me to pick up on Sunday. That leaves me about 2 months to reach my goal of having the car on the road. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  9. Sorry to hear you lost $200 Evan. You know, if its any concillation at all, you and a few others saved me thousands. I was trying to decide between the NA 6 and other options, and basically what it came down to was people telling me that for what I wanted out of the car, I should plan big from the start so I have a base to work with. Sounds advice. (thanks Evan among others!) I defiantely thing that if the buicks had a 5 spd option more people would be interested. I know I would! For me, the whole concept for my Z is a drivers car, and for ME that can't have an automatic. (others will vary!) My reasons for the Turbo are almost the same as Evans. The V8 was considered, and in the end I decided on something else for numorous reasons. I love inline 6's. That said, if I had been trying to get XX performance for the least amount of money, its hard to beat the GN/V8 swaps. 1 wrecked car and you can basically have everything. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! 10. Wow, a nice collection of parts you have there. I can just imagine how pleased you'll be comparing before/after. Car looks great too! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  11. Hey Mike (scca) you say that these are big for the street... Do you remember what Mikelly is doing with his car? Personally at speeds 190mph+ I don't think you can have too much brake! Whether on the track or on the street. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  12. If I were you and looking for brakes, take a look in the buy & sell forum and look at what Mike Kelly is selling. Those should be enough brakes for you, unless you plan on some really serious track time. (and likely still good enough then) Sounds like a great project! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  13. Hey Terry, thanks a lot for that info! Thats great stuff. I can't wait to work these ones out for my car. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  14. Bmw's 6's didn't have DOHC from 85. I don't know what years they started the DOHC on the 3 series, but my guess is that it was 92. I know for sure that the E30's didn't have them. (except for the M3) ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  15. Cams: Stick with the stock cam. You can spend the money on a fancy custom grind turbo cam, but unless you are really pushing the edge for performance, your money is likely better spend elsewhere. The stock cam will easily support an engine over 400hp. Depending what you want out of your engine, I would reconsider wanting a turbo that starts producting boost at 2000rpm. As Morgan states, you are going to be wheezing at high rpm with a turbo like that. I am not sure how most people have their T3/T4's set up. Depending on your A/R you can end up with low end or high end boost as you wish. Probably best to talk to the place selling you the turbo about this. One thing you sortof touched on. The P90 head is probably best for the turbo application, but the 7.4:1 CR isn't! I'd look into trying to get an 8.0:1 CR or so, but honestly I don't really know a good method to hit that number. Custom pistons would be nice! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  16. Well I did a little research into it. I had planned to put either the 3.3L or 3.5L six into my 240z. First off, they are wonderful engines. Superior to the L series due to the crossflow heads, as well as having a lower center of gravity because of the greater "slant" on the engine. The problems with the 3-3.5L (the big 6) are that the sump is in the wrong place. I did all the measurements for the swap, and the tranny lines up well with the stock shifter hole, engines are about the same dimentions, etc. But the sump would be right over top of the front crossmember in the datsun. Which forces you to either mount the engine high, or figure out some way to move the sump. I am not sure about the little 6's (2.0-2.8l) I don't know where their sumps are. But you really aren't gaining much over the L series 2.8 here. If you are planning on the swap, try to get that 3.5L in there! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! 17. Just a few comments on your setup. First: 8.5:1 is pretty high for the L series head design. It can be done, so don't worry too much! But you may be limiting your final HP a bit on pump gas. Second: 259cc injectors sound pretty small to me with a T3/T4. I'd look into that before you take the plunge. Third: I know nothing about the starion intercoolers, but it should be entirely possible to run them together. The question is what is the pressure drop across them? Running in parallel... sounds like your in for some really tricky plumbing! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  18. Hehe, Pam Anderson is from my town! Yup, she's a canuck... (haha, can't believe I admit that on behalf of canada) ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  19. I'm thinking about doing just that Simon. I have a set of sway bars off a 280zx turbo, which are considerably thicker than the 240z ones. The problem is, they are a slightly different shape. I plan on either a) heating and bending, being very careful with my temperatures. Or Figuring out some way of sectioning the bar and reattaching it. makes me shiver a little, but I figure if you were to remove a couple inches out of the dead center, weld it together, then put a ~4-6" piece of pipe over that section it would not fail catastophically. Of course I'd be pretty paranoid about it and check it often. All things considered, I like a) better. I guess another option would be to chop off the ends and use an adjustable clamp connection to the sway bar itself allowing me to effectively shorten it the small amount I need to. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! 20. Hey Bud. I'm doing the same conversion right now. Check out the link in my signature at the bottom, and read the turbo buildup artcile I posted. Its a decent start. There are also a dozen links at the end of it that will help you out. Plan on lots of reading if you know nothing about turbos. (I was in the same boat about 8 months ago!!) ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  21. Wow that sounds really promising! ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! Drax's 72 240Z Turbo
  22. Get a dremel or die grinder set up, grind out the crack a bit, rough it up. Then apply new mat/resin over the crack, (probably want it on the backside too) and sand it out. Probably the most important part is to make sure your surface is good and rough before you apply new glass, as it will stick a bunch better. I've had good sucess with this method. If you needed to do some fine filling there is no reason you couldn't use a plastic or fibreglass body filler as well. (again, surface prep is important) ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
  23. Wow Danno, that sounds promising! Do us all a favor and put your pictures up on a site and post them here when you get them! I'm interested. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
  24. The downpipe is a weakpoint, more so than the exhaust manifold. Check out my website for a budget turbo buildup article... it lists some other weak points too. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
  25. It might be early january, but we had been saying all along that the point in waiting until january was to miss the big hit at the same time as christmas. I doubt anyone has been payed between christmas and now... I believe the end of january has been thrown around for the most part. ------------------ Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.home.net/drax77/newpage.html
