  1. I do! But its a hell of a long trip. Not worth shipping it IMHO. You should take the time to find yourself a BW T-5 out of an 83 turbo... They are supposed to be stronger than the nissan trannies. You could likely also find a shop anywhere that will be able to do mods on it to handle more power. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  2. I found some flexible bumper paint on my shelf. I am going to paint the springs with that. I'm not sure just how much this paint will flex, but I think it will move enough. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  3. Well its going pretty good. I just have a couple of questions for anyone... - Removal of old control arm bushings: Torch/hacksaw/drill? or is there an easier way? - Steering Knuckles... can't for the life of me turn any of the 4 bolts on the 2 knuckles to get them off. Sat there with the impact on them for 5 minutes each, tried a breaker bar. Any tips? (I guess heat is next) - Also wondering if lower ball joints are usually supposed to be replaced every time their apart? How do you check them for wear? Thanks all... ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  4. Don't know, they aren't back in yet. I cut off 1 coil, off the top of the front springs. I am mainly looking for a bit higher spring rate. From the guys that have done it, the advised method is to go 1/2 coil at a time and see how it feels. I have an extra set of springs, so I decided to go a full coil for the first one. (the actual length of the spring probably changed about 3/4" or less) Unfortunately the car won't be running around until spring. I doubt I'll recognise it with the changes being made... it'll be hard to pinpoint exactly how much difference the cut springs made by themselves. Lots of people say this is extremely dangerous practice, etc. I think if you know what you are doing and what problems to look for you can make sure that you do it safely. Serious problems are not going to happen unless you are radically cutting coils off IMHO. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  5. Just rebuilding a front clip for my car. I'm wondering if anyone knows if POR-15 will be flexible enough to paint my springs with? Otherwise, what (if any) paint is recommended? I'm not spending the cash on powdercoating... These are a spare set of springs that I have cut a coil off of as a little experiment. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  6. Myron, the "cannonball run" these days is called "one lap of america." It is truly a unique race and challange! I am hoping to run a car in it in the enxt 6 or 7 years, but have nothing more concrete than that planned. You can check out info at: www.onelapofamerica.com www.onelap.com There are lots more pages out there if you do a websearch using google or yahoo... Very very neat cars! Also if you look at sports compact car from about 2 months ago there was an article on Catesby Jones's BMW. A 318ti with a turbo'd E36 M3 engine in it. 400+hp daily driver that weighs around 2500lbs. Jones finished 2nd overall in one lap in 98, against Diablo's, Vettes, WRX's, Vipers, you name it. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  7. Good tip Mike, got my extinguisher mounted too. If any of you don't have one on board, GET ONE. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  8. Wow. I really can't wait to see the webpage you put together! That is one hell of a combination... 9. As far as I know, the big reasons people decide to go with seamless tubing instead of welded is because the seamless stuff can be used in a thinner wall and still meet the same strength requirements. (ie: a place for slight weight savings) I've used lots and lots of welded 1/2" and smaller tubing and NEVER, ever under any circumstances seen the weld split, no matter what was done to it. You have to remember that if a weld is done properly its mechanically stronger than the material it is welding. (definately not chemically stronger though) I can't say for certain, but I'd expect the only regulation differences between the two would be different allowances on wall thickness. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  10. Does that include a change of bolt pattern? I am thinking I'd like to have a 4x100mm pattern to give me a crazy amount of wheel choices. Do you sell them Mike? ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  11. One idea: www.sdsefi.com Its fairly cheap (~$1000US) though you'll have to come up with an intake and throttle body setup. As for the rest, I'm not much help when it comes to chevy engine building. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  12. I figure at best they'll lower it to .43. Yes really. Look at "Aerodynamic data for 240Z needed & cooling idea " in the high tech forum, there is a good discussion there as to why the Z aerodynamics are so poor. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html [This message has been edited by Drax240z (edited November 04, 2000).]

    trim

Thanks Pete! You just solved a problem for me. My whales tail is bonded on to the hatch with windshield epoxy/urethane. (?) It certainly feels like the Gorilla snot stuff to me, I tried for about an hour to seperate the 2 without luck. Lets dissolve that stuff... I was considering getting some etching primer on my stainless trim and then using black POR-15 on it. (with the bumpers and door handles painted the same colour as the body) ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  15. Sorry I can't be more specific, but yes I have heard about these calipers used on an early Z before. I believe it was a car out of australia, but I am not sure. I know whoever was running them did have a webpage. Can anyone help us out? ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  16. Ross, have you found a local sourse that will make custom spacers for you? If so, hook me up. My wheels need about a 1" change. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  17. Hehe, no doubt Ross! I keep pushing Maximum Boost to everyone, but I don't think anyway that I've mentioned it to has actually bought it. Instead they ask me to look up things, or ask me to photocopy things out of it. Heh. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  18. OK, this is a little bit of work. You're going to have to crawl into the hatch area and remove the interior panel on it. Inside if you feel around you can find the bottom of the lock mechanism. There is a metal "U" that slides in to keep the lock in place. Remove this U and then you can pull out the lock from outside. Once you've removed the lock, you can see there is a arm on the bottom that moves in and out with the button. On this arm should be a little bolt! This bolt is used to adjust contact with the plate that opens the hatch. My best guess is that your bolt is missing. Either way once you get the lock out, you will at least be able to open the hatch from the ouside by pushing down on the lever inside the hole. If you need a picture let me know. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  19. Hey Fast Frog. Maximum Boost is actually a book, not a magazine. Its published by Bently Publishers... If you have used Bently books before you'll know how high quality they are. I am sure you could order it from amazon.com or some other large bookstore. It'll run you aroung $30 though. Tough luck on the engine Euro, but you'll find another. Look for a complete car that is running! I too am doing my buildup in stages. I am starting with the SDS, BOV, cold air intake, fuel system upgrade (bigger line and pump), 3" exhaust, and a good rebuilt of the engine... I feel that's a pretty good starting point. From there I will follow the stages I had posted earlier. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  20. I came across a formula in maximum boost that will estimate the amount of power you will produce from a given engine. Of course it is not exact... I will give the formula for high value and low value, so you can get a range at least. Low HP value = 0.052 x CID x (boost psi + 14.7) High HP value = 0.077 x CID x (boost psi + 14.7) The 0.052 and 0.077 constants represent bhp/(CID*psi) and have been arrived at from dyno pulls. (the highest and lowest values achieved are these numbers) So an L28 at 10 psi boost would produce: 217.5hp - 322hp. I know its not very accurate since there are so many other factors, but it can give you something to work with. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  21. MSA's turbo cam's specs: #10-0921, Lift: .460in/.440ex, Dur: 260in/250ex #10-0922, Lift: .460in/.460ex, Dur: 270in/260ex Both kits run $159.00, and I believe include new springs, lash pads and rockers. Seems like a pretty reasonable price actually! I am woefully under-educated when it comes to cams... I know what the numbers mean and the theory and everything, but not exactly how the numbers effect performance... Can anyone shed some insight into these 2 grinds? ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  22. Speaking of the SDS Mike, are you still trying to organize the group purchase? I'm in... ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  23. Funny how the 280zxt comes with a 7.4:1 stock compression ratio. I've had my head shaved .010" and am using a 1mm head gasket, so I am hoping that will sufficently raise things. Mike (Scca) was trying to organize a group SDS purchace, haven't heard much more about it though. I'm in if its going to happen! As for the article, I think I might try to whip something up. I'll do it as a tech article on this site... Though it won't really be complete until my engine is done. I can take the theory and put that into an article, but for actual results I'm going to have to wait. (I suppose I could append later though) Maybe I can find out what I need to know from the other L28 turbo's running around. I'll get the ball rolling on that in the next day, but I usually do things to excess, so it may take me a bit of time. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  24. Hey Ross, sorry if I mislead you a little. I'll post the info about octane/boost out of "maximum Boost" This is the curve for 92 octane gas, not intercooing. You'll likely want to plot it. Boost pressure vs. compression ratio (92 octane) 15psi/Cr:7 (to 1) 12psi/Cr:7.3 9psi/Cr:7.9 6psi/Cr:8.7 3psi/Cr:10 Plot those numbers and you'll have an idea how octane and CR relates. I know its not exactly what you are asking, but there are other variables. (temperature, head design, etc) I have graphs for 100 and 120 octane too if you'd like to see them. If you look at the numbers I gave you, and take a stock 280zx (at 7.4:1CR) you see that ideally you could run about 12psi boost on 92 octane without intercooling. I really can't recommend "maximum boost" enough to anyone. It covers everything turbo related and is written excellently. Most of you guys have your JTR bible for the V8 swaps, (I have that too) I'd have to say maximum boost is the bible for anything turbo. ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
  25. Definately stay with the stock cam, performance camshafts won't work in the same way! I believe it is due to higher valve overlap while the intake charge is compressed... air gets forced into the combustion chamber through the intake, and since the exhaust valve is open at the same time, gets pushed right out! (remember, its flowing in at higher than atmospheric pressures) You can get performance turbo cams, but as scottie says, spend the dough on an intercooler instead. I'll try to run down the parts you'll need: Turbo engine T3/T04 turbo 3/8" fuel line (not sure what zx's had stock) fuel pump fuel pressure regulator intercooler & piping Scotties world famous downpipe 3" mandrel bent exhaust and muffler Larger injectors (check scotties page) Custom fuel rail SDS EM-6F (i wouldn't bother with others) A mechanical boost gauge A mechanical oil pressure gauge I'd recommend an air/fuel gauge 60mm TB Slight porting of intake to accept TB I am sure I am forgetting things, but this is the basic idea... Not a small project. I'd strongly recommend you do some chassis upgrades at the same time. (urethane bushings, bigger brakes, etc) ------------------ "Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire" -Metallica Drax240z 1972 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
