  1. i actually saw one of the test mules in Las Vegas last year in the Luxor parking lot. At the time, all I knew is that it looked german, but thought it was a kit car. Had no clue it was audi's new supercar until it came out in the magazines a few months later. I even got a would-be carjacker caught trying to make a move on it when I told security there was a guy out there scoping it out

    i've had a set of 30 made, trying to sell them now actually. Didn't use your CAD file, but if I ever sell all of these I'll shoot you a few bucks for pioneering the idea!
  4. nice to see you on here Andy! You, me, and Clifton should have a little HybridZ meet up at the pavilions sometime after I finish mine, we can even drag some of the supra crew with us since I'm rooming up with Clint now.
  5. did you try grounding the plug outside the cylinder to see if it has spark? If it's got spark, and compression is good, go down to autozone and see if they have an injector pulser and fuel pressure tester. You should be able to rent the tools for a small amount if not free (at least with the one here, anyway).
  6. i'm right in the middle of doing a small block swap to my z31. the biggest thing off the top of my head is the steering box, I'm not sure the exact dimensions of the LS2, but I'm forced to run block hugger headers because of the steering box/shaft. also, axle stubs. Be prepared to shear them off like no tomorrow if your going to do hard launching, even with cryo treating. Someone on z31performance.com had a set custom made, and he's now breaking the half shafts apart. beefing up the clutching in the LSD is another thing on my list. I'm doing what the guys who took part in phyxius' group buy did and replacing the spacers for clutch discs. Hopefully i'll have enough left over from my material, so I can sell a few off.
  7. hello, I'm looking for someone who would be willing to make some clutches for my R200 CLSD, I will need a total of 4. I've asked phyxius if he still has them available and had no response back. I have a sheet of .062" 1095 spring steel, so you won't have to source the material, I just need someone to cut them out for me. I live in a po-dunk town with no CNC machinists anywhere within 3 hours of here...let alone anything close to waterjet. Sadly, I do not have access to any sort of CAD or CAM program, so the best I can do is see if anybody happens to have a dimensional drawing of the clutches (hint, hint) to go by. Also, if any of you are located in SLC, or know someone who can make them for me in SLC, I will be going down there on Friday the 18th and can drop the material off. Any help is appreciated! I hope to have my car done in a month or so, and this is the only thing really holding me up fabrication wise!
  8. the 1GZ-FE is the engine swap every supra owner talks about, but never does. I do think there's a guy in australia doing another one though. The FE designation means it's valve design is for economy. If it were a GE designation, things would be different. It IS a 5 liter though, basically 2 1JZ's slapped together. It would have really been awesome if it kept the same bore/stroke as the 1UZ-FE V8, only 4 more cylinders (making it a 7.5 liter) I'd love to do the swap to anything, but when a Century costs almost $13000 for a clip before importing it, as well as the total lack of readily available parts, the V12 from the BMW 7 and 8 series seems like a MUCH better, and cheaper, route to take. Chances are that motor is a bit more performance oriented then the GZ was ever meant to be.

  10. wahoo progess! and quite a bit at that. the old engine is out of the car and will soon be on the market (W series VG-30 ET, not that any of you want a Z motor) tranny is out and will be on the market (FS5R30A!) as well. quite an adventure too...it started out like this: and looked like this about lunchtime: so this is what happens when you don't take your exhaust off in 19 years... an undercar view without the front section of the exhaust: and once the driveline and middle exhaust section are removed: and just like I did last time I pulled a motor, I forgot the shifter.... problem solved: ...this isn't good. I didn't know the Z31 was an electronic speedo, you can see the connection for it here....guess I have to get a GPS speedo and hardwire it in. anyway, now were in business....here she is coming out: and the fruit of 8 hours of work hit the floor: and a shot of the bay...I need to practice my drain pan positioning skills....or just remember to drain the coolant from the engine next time: I'll be trying to get some of the suspension bushings put in tomorrow and over the weekend...fun little bastards those are going to be.
  11. anybody know of a place to source an LSD unit with a 3.9 final drive ratio for a Z31 R200 assembly? Would it be possible to, say, take an aftermarket LSD such as the cusco unit and put the 3.9 ring gear and pinion from a z31 open diff unit? if not, can anyone help me figure out what my options are?
  12. coming from a guy who's owned two MA70's, one turbo and one N/A, I can say I prefer the supra over my 88T. handling isn't really something you can compare between them. They both handle pretty well, but I preferred the feel of the double wishbone setup of the MA70. Brakes were also MUCH better, I can fade the Z's brakes after one hard stop compared to several in the MA70. The MA70 is also a bit more tame at high speeds and in oversteer situations, the difference in wheelbase really shows itself when your getting sideways (whether you wanted to or not). as far as engines, I'm pretty impressed with the VG30, but it's bone stock on mine. A stock 7M with a properly torqued head would probably be just as reliable. The reason you hear about so many 7M failures is due to ignorance on the owners part. MA70 owners are the cheapest, most ghetto people I've ever seen when it comes to upgrades, the question with them is never "what's the best for my situation" it's always "what's the cheapest thing that will barely get me by?". As far as stock for stock, I'd trust a 7M up to about 525hp before you start running into major stress issues with the rotating assembly. when it comes down to it, if I were to build an all out performance car, I'd probably go with the MA70. For a street car though, it's all preferance. Just keep up on maintenence and both the 7M and VG30 will last a long time.
  13. here's what I've accomplished so far: the brakes are the second most expensive part of the build, next to the cost of the engine. with Z32 30mm front calipers, fully rebuilt and re-powdercoated, 350Z track edition rotors, and brembo rear rotors on top of a full rear caliper rebuild, they're costing me a LOT of money compared to the suspension. here's what the calipers looked like when I got them: pretty icky huh? Well here's what they looked like with a few afternoons of tedious paint stipping, oh and there's some wheel studs there too: now throw $200 of parts, $90 of pads, and $100 of powdercoating at them: nice and shiny...just gotta hope they hold fluid. but where would those nice calipers be without a 12.75" brake rotor to hold onto? The center of the 350Z rotor is the same ID as the Z31, so I figured with some brackets I'd be in business. Here's a few comparisons: front to rear: 350Z front vs. Z31 front: mounted on hub, no caliper: I'll probably buy the Z32 bracket kit from conceptzperformance, since it should be bolt on...maybe .17" off on the lateral side, but I can shim it. the stereo was the one thing I really cheaped out on for the build, but only to get me through until the car was finished. I've got a cheap amp under the passenger seat for the rear speakers and another cheap amp and sub in the hatch. expect more updates soon. I'm ordering parts as fast as I can get the money for it!
  14. hey, new face around here. I've been lurking for a while gathering info on swapping a 350 chevy into my Z31. I'm doing a near full car build, with the engine coming last, but I'm about halfway there as-is so there shouldn't be too much more of a wait, I want to have it all finished by summer. I've hyperlinked everything I could to a picture of what I've got or getting. Some are just links to the merchant. If you want to see the actual progress on parts and comparisons of new vs. old, they will be in my next post. Anyway, here's what the plans are: 1988 Maroon z31 Turbo Engine/Exhaust: Engine Budget - $5000 Paid - $2750 Chevy 350 revving to 6500 Al heads (brand undecided) Eagle forged crank Eagle H-beam rods SRP lightweight pistons Hydraulic cam (brand undecided) roller rockers (brand undecided) lightweight flywheel (brand undecided) NOS cheater system (100 shot, most likely) dual mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust dual flowmaster hushpower II mullers dual Pacesetter Monza exhaust tips 100 Amp alternator exhaust will go into an X pipe immediately after the headers, I don't believe the hushpowers are true glasspacks, but hopefully the X will still do it's magic behind them. I've got to hammer out the frame on the passenger side, chop the spare tire well, and center the gas tank to fit everything in, but I'll make it happen. the engine itself is still being built, I'm still deciding on ignition and a carb, I'm almost set on the MSD 6AL box with a timing retard module for the nitrous. haven't thought much about the carb though, I'm much more familiar with fuel injection so it's a step into the unknown for me. Target horsepower and torque is 425-450 before the nitrous, and from there I have no clue as to what to expect. I have access to a paint booth an all the necessary equipment, so labor costs won't be an issue. Anybody have the paint code for it by chance?
  15. alf, nothing is on the car as of yet, I'm still in the parts gathering phase. I'm doing a full car build however, so it's taking quite a bit longer than just an engine build. I am going to do a bit of chopping though, I plan on running a dual exhaust setup so the spare tire well will be hacked and re-welded and an area of the body above the subframe on the passenger side will be hammered in to clear the exhaust. I'll be using block hugger headers at very minimum, I may go so far as to have some custom fabricated if I'm not happy with them, however. I'm not 100% as to how the tachometer will function, but would it be possible to use an MSD tach adapter in place of the ECU? or even keep the ECU only for tach, temp, and air conditioner purposes (that is, if the computer has an A/C idle up). Just disconnect the warning lights in the dash since they won't matter anyway. I'll also be cramming a larger radiator in the front than the stock '88 turbo. We have quite a few cores sitting around at the shop where I work so it's prettymuch as simple as finding one that fits and making some brackets.
