  1. Damn you for putting crazy ideas in my head, DAMN YOU I SAY!

+1... Went to the junkyard today, just browsing, and I couldn't pass a single Mercedes without thinking about it.. and who am I kidding I looked under most of the hoods, too.:wc:

  2. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=135748&highlight=efi+bible+step

as for specific guesses, I would be wondering about the Throttle Position Switch (not a sensor, this switch ahs three positions: idle, cruise, and WOT, and between them they each occupy roughly 1/3 of the throttle travel) or the Thermotime Switch. As for your AFR reading... 32 would be stupid lean, something seems out of whack there, and AFRs aren't the tree to start barking up to solve this problem.

What do your spark plugs look like? Fouled out with too much fuel, or what?

  3. wreck005.jpg

doenst look that strong ;) but given the s130 is stronger than an s30 in case of a collision.

That door sure looks (relatively) fine

Some say the soul was designed out of the car; I say that did not happen until after the S130....

I'm 29, and I was born into riding in my dad's 240Z, and grew up hating on the ZXs... but I can't maintain that conviction.

In my head, there are now simply, five different Z-cars. The S30 is the only one thats "a REAL Z-car" in my head, but I roll my eyes at myself every time I make the distinction. To be brutally honest, an NA Z31 in the fully dressed trim (ie, picture an 86 2-seater) in SOME ways looks more like a modernized 1970 240Z than even a 78 280Z.

The fact is, we were never given a clear cut on what our car even IS. "Do you prefer Firebirds or Camaros?" We don't even get such clear-cut duplicity as THAT. To say "One is Good and the other is so dissimilar It is Bad" is to compare an Alfa-Romeo to an RX-7.

(side note: my dad had an alfa like this before i was born, and then a mazda like this about eight years ago. cool huh?)

  4. Fire extinguisher. Tire repair kit and a ten dollar air pump form wal-mart. If you are super spunky, some wire, an inline fuse, a relay and a switch. (never know when the ol' fuel pump power supply might go out. We all know it happens on these FI cars occasionally.) Rope? (I always at least consider rope when making a list like this, it comes from the books I've read.) a 12 volt spotlight might be helpful as well. These are all suggestions, really, I know you are limited on space and can't bring the whole world.

PB Blaster/WD-40/Sea Foam Deep Creep.. but its your car, you might not NEED that, you know best.

A gallon of gas in a can might not be a bad idea either... but like I said, if something occurs to me I'm not shooting it down, I'm just giving you suggestions.

  5. It goes without saying that there is an undercurrent of tension regarding the entire concept of finding a DOHC/crossflow head for an L6; causes include the extreme rarity of (and accompanying disinformation regarding) the two existing "non-standard" heads for the engine (LY and OS-G), the misinformation regarding the original connection between the L6 and its Mercedes "ancestors;" and the confusion regarding Brian's franKAstein head are three decent causes to point at.

The only animosity/correction that was made, was regarding the statement that was made that (when blown out of proportion for purposes of illustration; I haven't even gone back to re-check who originally made the comment b/c it doesn't matter) implied that the ENTIRE Z-CAR COMMUNITY had determined that NO other existing DOHC I-6 head would fit on the Z motor.

Just a slip of the tongue. (keyboard)

Now, can we go back to playing half-breed Axis Power Plants?!?!?!?! Its SUPER fun!!!

  6. You aren't "causing" any animosity; this is a subject that has been open to a great deal of speculation and BSing, so you have to understand you are treading water in a sensitive area.. Tony was clarifying his statement from earlier, and his last post was directed against the forces of Vagueness and Imprecise Language everywhere. Clear, honest, factual communication is the only method humans have of transferring ideas from one to another, and the members of this forum try to have utmost respect for that. That being the case, TonyD could NOT let such a huge blanket statement as "how did we all let this escape our notice for so long?!?!" slip by him, nor can I blame him. My reaction to reading that was "Speak for yourself!! I haven't ruled out anything I haven't seen on a block, and that ain't anything!"

    Semantics are NOT trivial!! :)

  7. It might not quite be what you had in mind, but here is something to help you picture the car with no windows at all :)

My dad's old '70 car, "The Grey Ghost," backyard drip rail shave and full interior strip including all windows and chrome. this thing was a no-rules-attended, parking lot club racer that had very little wisdom and a whole metric ton of fun :burnout:

  8. Yes the 240 bumpers will fit. I've never done it myself, but it is a very comon mod. I believe it just bolts up, might require drilling a hole or two. There are also aftermarket options, but the 240 bumpers are the best IMO.

Not that simple... but not awfully complex. the bumpers are totally, 100% different from bar to mount through to where they mount into the car Decorative flimsy chrome things versus heavy impact bumpers. (the 75s were BRUTAL guys..)

google xenons30 and you will find a site that will provide you with at least SOME of the 75 FSM in PDF; it is about all I have found yet. I am pretty sure he took my zip file of wiring schematics I have collected from The Internet for a 75 and posted it there as well. FYI, the 75, 76, 77 and 78 280Z all had significant differences in nitty-gritty details, and 75 is the least developed (but also simpler) layout so alot of later literature would not apply to your hardware. I also own a 75 if you hadn't gathered yet.

Props to you for picking up this EFI on your own; its great to see new users pick up the books and ask informed questions. One last piece of advice I will give you is that it NEVER hurts to read through the theory section of the EFI bible fifteen thousand extra times, and alot of the testing procedures are good to re read as well... OUTSIDE of a garage setting, just for mental review's sake. The system is simple enough that anyone is capable of grokking it in fullness, if the dedication, attention, and observation is there. :2thumbs:

  9. The dampening fluid may be gone from them as well, which can definitely make the car die when you give it gas.And all of the vacuum lines will be suspect.

    Ka-ching!!!!

    http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?p=965695

A little bit of reading on how the SU carburetors work and you will be amazed at how well a car can run on a pair of sideways toilet tank carburetors. There is a super-cool feeling involved in getting those two carbs feeding the engine the right gas... it is integral to the Z experience to me. But I'm waxing philosophical, which usually means they've let me stay out too late........:nono:

  10. someone earlier asked if the plastic spray caps on the injectors were intact. If the injector tips aren't right, the fuel will have more of a dribble action than a spray action, difficult ignition, problems across the board.

You need to read the plugs, and I would replace the AFM with a known good one if it is at all possible. Anyone anywhere near you that can help you out?? It would be perfect if you could find someone with a stock electronics L28ET in your region that wanted to help you out. If you can throw in a known good one and it works, you know you need an AFM; if the known good one doesn't work, then you try putting yours onto the other car (if the guy's super nice. Obviously this is an ideal situation)

Could you have a bad fuel pressure regulator or a clogged return line? Maybe even a bad vacuum line to the FPR...

  11. For the record, I used the term RTFM to invoke a little humor, and not to inject anger.

I'm trying to help you, or I would save my effort in posting. Like I said, sorry to sound harsh but I was giving advice I deemed would likely help you. No need for you to apologize, I knew I was rubbing you a little rough.

My point was one I have repeated a thousand times before: none of us here really have very much to add to the contents of the EFI bible; that book is the root of many individual knowledge bases here (mine included.) The only other helpful resource is experience, and time in understanding the principles taught by "the book." I tell people to read through the first section, then immediately read through it again, then read through each little test procedure for each component, and then re read the first section AGAIN, and then go back and look at their car. That is lesson one, and the rest of the class is simply reading the book repetitively, and tinkering with the car repeatedly. Going back and forth, until you know what to expect, is the best way to learn how to use it.

Now, that was more or less my standard "This is how to use the EFI bible" schpiel.. What I am saying to you is, step back, slow down, and re evaluate your problem without assuming anything. Start at square one and begin again, and answers fall out of the sky.

Sometimes it takes an arse-wipe, behaving like an arse-wipe, to kick you in the right direction. I AM trying to help you, not berate you to make myself look all big and smart. (Truth of the matter is, I am good at making mistakes. Because of that, I know how mistakes are made, and I am ALSO good at interrupting people who make my mistakes. And THAT is what these forums are all about, right????)

  12. You haven't read through the EFI bibl,e or if you have, then you weren't paying attention to any of the diagnostic or rpeair procedures laid out.

You are running absurdly rich, and have super low fuel pressure. You are not running very smoothly, and you HAD uneven compression, which has gone away.

On top of all that, you are splattering black sooty fuel nastiness out your exhaust.

You have one fuel injector clogged open, hence the low fuel PSI. your engine is getting too much air, and nowhere near enough fuel (except on the one or two cylinders with clogged injectors.)

Pull your spark plugs and I bet they don't all look the same.

Go RTFM and come back when you can demonstrate an understanding of the concepts involved.

problem is'nt too little fuel..... its too much fuel

Sorry to be harsh about it, but read my sig; (wisdom etc) You keep telling us what the problem is and is not, but you don't what know the problem is or you wouldn't be asking us. If you want the help, it is time to learn how to accept it.

  13. The S130 slicktops have an amazing amount of headroom but the one thing that worried me as a 6'5" guy was my shin (4 inches below knee) being against the stereo console while driving.

I was always worried I would hit something hard enough for my shin to break the plastic and run into the knifelike metal behind it.

Really my only real complaint with the S130 was that they gave you a taste of how awesome speakers reflecting off of the windshield sound but then compromised it by putting the "left" speaker to the right of the driver. (passengers got the good sound)

Anybody who's driven a GM car with a nice set of front speakers knows the awesome stereo separation and "in your face" sound this setup gives you.

If you take a pair of 6x9s and set them up in boxes (or one box) and then lay them down at the extreme rear of the hatch so that they point along the roofline of the car, you can get a similar effect. I had some $300 Infiniti Kappa 3-ways rolling around in individual boxes for a long time, and when I put stuff underneath the boxes to raise and angle them right, the sound quality just shifted minutely in the car, and I could not tell where the speakers were at all. This was with no front speakers whatsoever, and no amplifier, just a pair of 6x9s in small unvented boxes.

  14. what is this Chevy I6 out of? I am not very familiar with American I6 motors..... because it seems like American companies shy away from ever using them, and American car guys ignore the ones that have been used in the past. Other than the modern 5/6 cylinders used in the colorado pickups, the Jeep 4.0 motors, and the 300CI ford motor, I've hardly ever seen one.
