  1. You say the word "profiling" like it is somehow illegal or unethical.

As long as the driver's race is not involved I see nothing wrong with what the cops did. It sucks, but not wrong.

Go to court and see if you can beat it when the cop doesn't show up or on the outside chance the judge got laid the night before. Or better yet, have your buddy get rid of the fart can and tape the plate to the front bumper. Then bring in pictures to show the judge he got it fixed. Might get off with just court costs.

  2. That was always a worry of mine too. But I have seen pictures where you just need to get the car at a nose up angle something like 45° to be able o slide the engine, tranny and cross member out the front. Go to Harbor Freight and get a $20 funiture dolly (good to 1000#), lower the engine/crossmember unit down on that then tilt the body up.

The other option is to get the eingine resting on the furniture dolly then sawsall the front clip off the vehicle.

  3. Took the whole family to see it. My boy has been talking about it for the last 2 weeks. I think I enjoyed it more than the kids. They got a little bored at first. Guess they didn't recognize a lot of the characters. But about the time Mater showed up they were into it.

  4. Are you swapping VINS or just replacing a whole bunch of parts?

Today the current bid is down to $1000 with buy it now price of $8000. then in the comments is says the reserve is $30K.

    WTF?

  5. 240z m/c was too small(not enough volume of fluid to operate the calipers) as the pedal was dangerously close to the floor with new pads...would run out of travel when pads wore....

The stock MC may have been too small, I don't know. But you do realize having worn brake pads should have no impact on pedal travel. As the pads wear more fluid should fill the calipers resulting in the same pedal movement for the same brake movement.

There is an adjustable push rod between the back of the MC and the booster that needs to be lengthened when swapping the MC. Or you could have the reaction disk problem Jon talks about. Or maybe there is air in the lines.

  6. Poly steering rack bushings and getting rid of the rubber steering coupler are two must have swaps IMO. Other than that, the Z front ends are pretty bulletproof.

I had my 5 speed rebuilt and they did replace the shifter bushings. Made a big difference in the shifter feel.

  7. That was my question excactly. I already have a reliable engine, trans, welder, cutting torch, vices, ect, ect... What I want to know is, beyond all the parts, what can I look to be spending to have it all installed. Im not looking to build a 100% brand new, ls1 t5 wannabe corvette. Do I have to buy new mounts or can they be made? Also can I use the stock Z rear end? Can I use the stock gas tank? What would have to be done with the computer going from a F.I. inline 6 to a carbureted V-8? Would the stock fuel-pump work. I just want to know how many things I HAVE[/u'] to buy brand new. And what i can just temporarily reuse so its driveable.

You really need to buy the JTR manual, read it, then see how many of your questions were answered.

Yes, ylou can make the mounts (the JTR manual gives templates). Yes you can reuse the gas tank and all the stock guages. Yes, the stock Z rear will work. Some will last longer than others depending upon how much HP you have, whether you are auto or manual and how you drive.

Documented JTR swaps have been done for $1500. I can no longer find the link but a guy named Ron Tyler posted how he did it. I thnk the JTR manual says they did one for that. Figure maybe another $500 for inflation.

The #2 most important thing to a low buck swap is your ability to source parts, but the #1 most important thing is having the attitude you seem to have: don't go crazy trying to do too much. Where most guys get killed is trying to buy a specific type of part or the dreaded "while I'm at it" syndrome. A rebuilt World Class T5 is probably a smart way to do, but if you get a killer deal on a 350 with an auto, go with that.

Get the JTR manual and follow their advice.

  8. I have had that happen 2 or 3 times in the past. Told the credit card companies the charges were not mine and that was it. The credit card companies took care of it with no other issues.

Getting a single card compromised is really not a big deal. You get the bills within a month and can get the bad charges deleted without much effort.

It is when they start making up new cards in your name that you have a serious problem. The bogus cards don't know your true address so you may not find out about them until a collection agency calls you months later. You can usually get all the bogus charges dropped without having to pay them, it just takes a lot of time monitoring your credit report and dealing with all the bureaucracy involved.

  9. Why am I doing this? First of all to stick it to OPEC and Big Oil. Also, E85 costs $1.99/gallon as opposed to $3.00 for the premium 91 octane unleaded I'm supposed to run.

There is a lot of spirited debate whether ethanol doesn't actually use more energy to make than it produces. So it is not really much of a solution. And you do realize the only reason E85 is cheaper is because it is subsidized. So by paying a quarter million a year in income taxes, you are in effect subsidizing your own E85 consumption.

IMO, E85 makes a lot of sense if it can be produced on a small scale using fuel sources that would otherwise be wasted. But not many of us live on a pig farm or near an apple orchard.

  10. I like it. Have lived and worked just south of Baltimore for 12 years now. Before that I lived in LA and Nebraska.

Real estate has gotten pretty obscene out this way. But other than that Maryland is a nice state to live in. Good people, good schools (in most areas) and the weather is not too bad. Not as nice as LA but no where as extreme as the midwest. A lot of work in this area too. Not much open space, but boating on the Chesapeake bay is good.

For cars less than 25 years old, Maryland has binannual smog checks. Older cars get a treadmill test (worse than LA), but they just check the computer error codes on post 1996 cars. The newer cars have to pass a safety inspection when they are first licensed in the state, but only when they are first licensed. Sort or a revenue generating tactic for the local shops to sell wiper blades and head light alignments to all the newcomers.

DC has speeding cameras and red light cameras. The speeding cameras are pretty easy to spot by all the calibration marks they paint on the street. The roads through the district are purposely laid out poorly, I have heard in an effort to encourage mass transit. Overall DC is a pretty miserable place to drive. I worked on the other side of the district for a few years otherwise I would have avoided it as much as possible.

The Virginia area surrounding DC is more expensive and has worse traffic problems than Maryland. But they have even more high tech, defense and government related jobs. Overall I think taxes in the two states is about the same. Maryland might be a little higher.

I have no idea what the smog laws are like in Virginia.

  11. Not sure about DC or Virginia, but in Maryland cars over 25 years old can get either Hot Rod or Historic plates (only $55 every 2 years) and are not subject to emissions or safety testing.

In fact, I tried calling the state smog office and the state police to see what the rules were with old cars and how I could get it certified. They had no idea what I was talking about.

DC is virtually a communist state, so I would think they might be more strict. On the upside, they are pretty poorly run so they probably never allocated money for a smog office.
