What is the loudest BOV on the market?
1FASTKINGCAB replied to 1FASTKINGCAB's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
In 1500 miles it's only staled twice, only while shifting from one gear to another, never at idle. I can live with it. I'll see how it does with a good clutch and perhaps a I/C so I can turn up the boost and if it still stalls from time to time then I'll worry about it. That is unless it doesn't affect proformance. If it only happens when I drive like a little old lady then I sill won't worry about it. If I put a stifer spring in it it won't vent at idle either, I just have is set soft so it's louder when shifting. Someone put it to me like this, every time I shift and the BOV vents it's like giving my MAF a swift kick in the gut. sometimes I just knock the wind out of it. right or wrong it makes sense to me. -

Well, I had to rush it together near the end because I lost my job. Because of that I didn't get to do some things the way I would have liked to. 1) I had to use both the stock exhaust manifolds W/ the turbo mounted east-west on the X-over pipe on the front of the motor. I wanted to only reuse the pass. side manifold and use a custom peice on the driver side with the turbo mounted north-south where the A/C compressor was, alot more like it is in a 300ZX. I also wanted to put a real clutch in before I put the truck on the road but I ran out of time & money. The clutch that's in there now is a stock nissan clutch (poor thing) which severely limits the trucks proformance, I can feel it start to slip a soon as the boost gauge passes 3-4psi, it slips VERY bad when trying to pass on the highway in 5th. must smell prety bad behind me . I've got about 1500 miles on the truck with the turbo. The only problem I have had is sometimes, rarely but it does happen, when I shift the check engine light will come on and the truck will stall. I think it's the BOV venting and screwing with the MAF & stock ECM. The Turbo XS BOV is loud, I don't know about 100ft though. Higher boost must make it louder. You can hear my truck a good 20-30feet. I've got is set soft so it even vents a little at idle I have seen some BOV's HKS & Blitz I think, that have some sort of megaphone on them. I guess I was wondering if they where louder than the Turbo XS BOV. I guess not. What I'm gona do is put the Fiero on the road while I put a clutch in the truck and get a new manifold & X-over pipe fabricated. Then put the truck back on the road and take the Fiero off the road and throw a T3 on it I'll also get some pics up of the truck once I get the turbo on there nice. It's far too ratty right now to share with the world I Guess I should change the last line of my sig to "And running " -

Thats what thought, I guess there is a reason they call it the RFL (Realy F-ing Loud) BOV -
I am curently geting the parts together to put a super cheapo backyard turbo kit on my 4-banger Pontiac Fiero. one thing that I don't mind spending money on is the BOV. I want everyone to know I got boost. I want to sound like a Suzuki Escudo on grand turismo 2 I've got a RFL BOV on my truck and it's very loud, is there one thats louder? I assume the amount of boost I run will also affect how loud the BOV is. Right? I run 5-8psi in my truck, but will rarely if ever go past 5psi in the Fiero.

Perhaps not best for your car here, but there is my idea; While you are looking under the hood for the leak, ave someone plug the exhaust for a couple seconds at a time. maybe the hiss will get louder. PS. did you remeber all the gaskets whn you put it back together?

I am going to start tearing into my Nissan Hardbody (VG30E) this weekend. and hope to have it running by mid January. I already have whats listed below is there anything else major that I will realy need to get it running? I've got; Stock 300ZX T3 turbo (watercooled) 255lph Fuel pump HKS "AFR" Turbo XS Blow off valve I only plan on around 220-240HP with 5-7psi of boost. I haven't picked out a intercooler yet but I think I'm going to use a Isuzu NPR FMIC. A 3" stainless down pipe & exhaust will be used, the same will be used for te intake side. The turbo will be mounted at the front of the engine bay where the A/C used to be, and fed by upside down stock manifolds & a custom X-over/ Y pipe.

I think I'm going to need a muffler on my truck B4 I put it on the road and I was wondering what a borla XR1 race muffler would sound like? any one have or heard one on a ZX?

To Anyone with a spare VG30 in thier shop/back yard

I don't know how awesome it will be since I don't plan on more than 7psi (210-220HP). I just got a new webtv plus so I can upload digital cam pics but I haven't had the time to figure it out yet. I'll put pic on my site as soon as I can. -

Thanks for the link, I already have the turbo mounted on the truck though. I mounted the stock truck manifolds upside down and then fabricated a custom Y pipe and bracket that puts the turbo just in front of the water pump. The down pipe runs down the front and under the crossmember. I still need to run the coolant lines, oil lines and install the FMIC to see how well the Y pipe will flow. -

Uh... I just want to turbo charge the VG30E in my truck. I've got MPFI from the factory. I just want to know if the manifold can bolt on up side down. -
My factory Knock sensor is dead center on the manifold. although I have a V6 there may be a better place for it on a L6

On my old fiero I hot wired the TC so that when I hit a button on the shifter the TC would lock it puts the crank & input shaft at a 1:1 ratio. The I'm sure the supras can do the same. the later supras could probably lock the TC up W/ the traction control or ECM programing.

sory I'm wondering about the VG30E/VG30ET in 84-89 Z31 300zx & 90-97 D21 Pickup. and the z31com board dosen't work well W/ my webtv (WebTV = ) -
If anyone with a VG30 that they are building up could help me out on this. I would like to know if your exhaust manifolds will bolt on upside down, so that your turbo would be up on the top right side of the engine and the crossover pipe would run across the front of the engine. Or if anyone knows that both the Left & Right exhaust manifold gaskets have the same part# it would help out alot. Thanks, TomD

vg30det in a 4X4 nissan truck update

are you talking about a 84-89 VG30ET or a 90+ VG30DETT? -
turbo truck( vg30et): pain in the ass!
1FASTKINGCAB replied to warrenp's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
am I to under stand that the stock 300ZX turbo & driver side manifold fit? How did the turbo clear the left frame rail? This weekend a local shop was going to look into swaping my cyl heads and mounting the factory manifolds backwards so the crossover pipe runs across the front of the motor to the turbo on the front of the pass. side head. but all this was because we thought the stock location would not work. -
So would it be a bad idea to run this I/C? I only got it because it was cheap and it's the bigest FMIC that I think I'm going to find in a junk yard. I wasn't thinking about he effects of dumping a 2.5" pipe into a 3.5" pipe and then into a 2.75" pipe, But I don't just want to run a 2.75" pipe straight to my engine W/O a I/C of some kind P.S. what's the diff.? "Pressure drop" and "Lag"? If a turbo outlet is say 2" and one used 4" pipe it would take a moment for the turbo to fill the extra area in the pipe. that would be lag right? so if one ran 2" pipe from the same turbo to a 4" section of pipe and back to 2" just before the TB wouldn't that cause lag? It would take a moment to fill the 4" section but after it's full I would think the whole system would have the same pressure across the board. or am I way wrong? or dose lag also involve the exhaust gas pressure? Thanks, Tom D

No, I need the turbo to be above the manifold. Thanks any way. I have found a shop to do a manifold but they need my truck for a few days, I just haven't had the time.

I would like to fool the ECM into thinking my car is running @ 150° what ohm resistor should I use?
-
Is there a way to wire up two nissan mass air flow sensors? I would think that two could folw twice as much as one right? I have seen on a few turbo cars (SR22DET Silva) that the use a 3" "Y" pipe on the turbo inlet and two stock MAF's and two cone filters. just wondering if it coud work with a lightly moded ECM

A note on the CA family of motors. you an use a CA18DE head on a CA20E to make a CA20DE. You can use a CA18DE head on a CA18ET to make a CA18DET The CA... motors don't make alot of power and would be a waste to swap form say a L series or KA series however the CA family of engines shares it's motor mounts and trans bolt pattern with the SR20 so a SR swap into a car with a CA iwould be a bolt in swap.

I work at at tire dealer and can tell you the BFG drag radial is a better tire than the Nitto 555R. You'll get more miles out of the 555's than the BFG's but the BFG's will get you down the track faster. The nitto's are made with FWD cars in mind and have a stifer side wall where tha BFG's are made W/ RWD cars in mind an have alot more give in the side wall. The nitto's also tend to slip on the rim (rim spins tire dosen't) on high powered cars. another one to think about is the BFG GForce T/A drag radial though I don't think it's avail. in the size you want.it is made like the nito 555 drag (FWD's in mind) but had a better compound.

awd92gsx: I don't know what turbo i'm going touse just yet though I'm 90% sure I'll use a good old Garret T3. lockjaw: Oh yeha it will fit, it fits great. But don't thik there is any more room for the A/C to go back in though. It's a tight fit the inlet & outlet at a 90° angle to the I/C so the wrap perfectly around my radiator and rin into the engine bay. on;y about 60% of the I/C will be open to air flow due to the truck front bumper but it think it will work out ok. I'm just woried about lag cause I've never realy driven a turbo car more than a few feet and don't know what to expect.
-
sory I forgot that the "minus" and "plus" butons no longer work on my POS keyboard. The I/C is a little more than 2 1/2" inches thick (2 TO 3" thick)

I was at the junkyard today a spoted a '99 ford f350 W/ a intercooled power stroke I snached up the front mount I/C for $50 with a broken mounting ear but other than that it's in great shape. the only problem I see is that the thing is huge it's about 30" wide 24" tall & 23" thick it's crossflow I think that what you call it since it flow left to right, It also has huge 3" in/outs. just wondering if thist would cause alot of lag?
