  1. Don't they come with Swagelock Ends? Some nice 0.375" X 0.035" Wall 304 Stainless is cheap and won't corrode like the Aluminum Tubing will.

When my heat tubing went out, that's the route I went at least. It is a pain to roll the bead on the stainless compared to Aluminum!

  2. Heres a link to rocky auto's supercharged stroked l28. looks to be efi as well. Its in japanese but maybe the pics will help.

    http://www.rockyauto...il.php?id=10922

You realize the Rocky Auto Z was a purchase from Stateside, right? It was a car they bought in the States.

Don't get me wrong, Rocky Auto does some trick stuff... 1UZ in Box Skyline for example... but this one is really up to 'rocky auto standards' IMO

It's a supercharger mounted on an Arizona Z-Car Manifold with a tig welded adapter and some strut rods.

Somewhere I've got photos from the Auto Salon last year.

  3. "Looks like the car was designed around RHD"

Truer words were never spoken. The BIGGEST adjustment that I have to make in my LHD Z-Car is canting my arse because the PEDAL BOX IS OFF CENTERLINE WITH YOUR BODY.

In the RHD car, your throttle foot is straight out, and so is your clutch foot. If you never drive one, you will never notice this.... Amongst other things like putting aftermarket EFI is a SNAP with all the open space up behind the glove box (if you don't have factory air, that is!) Or that all those connectors in the right side bulkhead and their positions all seem to make sense from an engineering standpoint because it shortens up the harness smartly for the RHD car...

  4. Er.... yeah, those triples are worth more than the other two parts of the package alone!

PM me with the manufacture date of your 260, and the engine number. I may have a candidate for it if it's got the original head on it as well (E88 I think).

I'd put the carbs up for bid, and get what you could for the rest. A good five speed is getting harder to find these days, you may be surprised. The Engine is a tarbaby, not an L24, not an L28...sad.gif

  5. Personally, I wouldn't register is until they MADE me.

The ONLY penalty you will pay is for your own stupidity when you trudge into the DMV and say something stupid like "The CHP pulled me over six months ago and said I had to get it registered..."

If and or when the time comes that you MUST register it (and this is some cop ticketing you, then RETICKETING you and citing the CVC that compels you to register it...)

Then you trudge down to the DMV and say you JUST got in (prove it with your two tickets) and need to register the car.

Until such time as that happens, I'd say "blow me"...

You realize California DOES NOT have reciprocity with ALL states, right? Points and infractions on your drivers license MAY NOT be relayed to your home state. Therefore not affecting your home state insurance coverage, or any other licensing renewal issues.

But far be it from me to say 'blow me' in earnest, by all means you should go to the DMV immediately let them see your car, assess it for $25,000 and charge you 8% SALES TAX for the privilege of informing them you have come to the state to avail yourself of the higher educational establishments. Just like that poor bastard with the Impala SS from Michigan lives down the road from me. Boy was he shocked when they nailed him for ASSESSED OLD COLLECTOR CAR VALUE! Yes, you should totally comply because you MIGHT some day get caught, and then you will HAVE to do it and there won't be any penalty for not doing it TO that point, other than your guilt that you knowingly broke the law.... You're a veritable pederast, you are!

  6. "One question though, I've read that long tubing from the air inlet to the manifold will make for laggy acceleration, especially in cases of intercooled turbos."

That comes from wanker theoriticians who live on the internet while logged on from their parent's basement eating cheetos and slurping Tab with posters of Star Wars on the walls behind them...

When you do the math, ESPECIALLY with the non-linear delivery from Centrifugal Superchargers the 'lag' you get is imperceptible to the human arse, much less anything else. With a proper compressor bypass valve, it can be argued longer piping helps keep the compressor spooled longer and faster in between shifts, but I don't want to start anybody choking on their cheetos and spitting Tab all over th3eir keyboard but suffice to say the internet myth of 'long piping' is just that: a myth.

Talk to the guys with the rear-mount STS units and discuss lag, see what THEY have to tell you about THEIR experiences!

  7. My head is a bubbling cauldron of next generation L-Series tricks.... if you guys only knew!cool.gif

And yes, that Racer Brown stuff is exactly what Ron at Isky will tell you as well. There is engineering involved with profiling a cam, and you can work it out on paper first!

Oh, and as Pete references my earlier post, another "Fat Old White Guy" is no longer doing L-Heads. Take BC Geroloamy off your list of places to do your head. Nathan closed up shop, and there is no more L-Head work being done by them (they weren't really doing it before, they were Harley Centric, but we had an offer they couldn't refuse so they did two heads--Nathan and his Dad when Nathan couldn't get the numbers he wanted...)

So JeffP has the last two heads done by Nathan, and his Dad (the guy who did the porting you see in a lot of the "How to Hotrod" book)...

Slover's Porting in L.A. is still doing them, maybe Mike will do one for ya. The last few people I steered their way seemed really happy with the results.

  8. That sucks. My bud in Chicago just lost his long-term Pug...

And my Rottie is up in hours as well.

I would agree, find "CJ2"--a pup with that devilish streak that looks at you and pees on your foot.

It's the best recovery. It will never replace the original, but it does keep the memories alive and happy.

  9. "My point wasn't that you would get a ticket for not registering"

But you won't anyway, so that point is moot.

You're in Oregon, I'm in CA. Please defer to those who have lived, and are living this nightmare currently.

You COULD get pulled over for being white and having long hairl...

You COULD get pulled over for 'not having a rear bumper in place'...

You COULD get pulled over for a light being burned out, or any other number of reasons...

Coulda woulda shoulda.... But you won't get a ticket for not registering. In over 20 years living in the state I have NEVER heard of ANYBODY being ticketed for a violation of the 10 day rule. Not once. Vehicle registration OR driver's license conversion. And MOST DEFIANTLY not MILITARY IN THE STATE ON TDY or PCS Orders! I invite anybody who has or FIRSTHAND can say they've seen such a citation and can cite the CVC Violation Code for it.

  10. It could be merely curiousity...

I mean, why rent a wind tunnel to prove "what we already knew about the S30"....

Guess we didn't know all we thought we did, huh?

The quest for knowledge trumps all reason. Six WBO2's... Six EGTs.... Remember I used to have access to K and J thermocouples, AND an Omega Datalogger! I had 6 on the black shark car long before those fancy WBO2's were available.

"Back in the Day" it's simply how you did it! Less than 20 degrees differential between cylinders was the goal...

It may not be "right" -- but it is consistently wrong if nothing else!tongue.gif

  11. Way off base on that one.

    Not sarcastic at all.

But if you want it to be, it will be. Sorry you took it that way.

I thought it was funny as hell.

Does anybody owe anybody an "update"?

I posit many go underground for development now due to such demands.

  12. An out of state plate is an easy reason to pull you over. They only have to see the plate twice, eleven days apart. Even if your car is legal, getting pulled over can lead to unintended consequences. Food for thought. You'll be watching your back for a year.

    This is incorrect.

They have to TICKET or otherwise PROVE you are in the state for more than 10 days, and then what will they do? What jurisdiction do they have if your car is legally registered in your home-of-record state, holding legal plates, legal registration, and legal insurance?

Yeah, good luck proving any justification for ANYTHING!

I've been hit, and had thousands of dollars of damage to my car done, and the circumstances so disturbed the CHP Officer taking the report he came to my house three days later under pretense of 'not having my full address for the report' and then proceeding to tell me the other driver had a suspended California License, but a valid Texas one... with a legal residence, and intention to reside there so "my hands are tied on this matter" and then reiterated three more times that his California License was Suspended, but he had a Valid Texas one. Oh, and that his California license was suspended. Did I mention his California License was suspended, but that he had a Valid Texas License?

Then the lawsuit papers came. And he wasn't in the service.

Keep the car registered legally at your home of record until forced to do otherwise. I recall someone in the state 300% longer than your projected time here driving on SOFA Plates from Overseas...

If you're legal, and have intention of returning to your home of record, it screws their jurisdiction ploys all up.

If you read the CVC, and have the right things to say... not lie, just the right thing to say when asked, there is very little impetus or even reason to change registration.

And I can see many downsides to registering it in the state, outside of the pernicious taxes you will have to pay for the cost of the vehicle and any modifications (or arbitrary value they set forth) when you register it...

I'm not saying to violate registration requirements in CA, nor am I saying to not pay the taxes the Franchise Tax Board feels they are entitled to extract from you simply because you are being TEMPORARILY stationed here in the Sunny California State... Far from it, you should follow all their laws and regulations and pay all the taxes and fees they want. Render unto Ceaser, you know?

You know, you should buy one of those FOP stickers for the back of the car. Make that little donation as well. Out of state plate or not, watch what that investment gets you ...

  13. I'll mention Jeff P tried taking off in his car in second.... it's hard on the clutch and when the wrinklies gripped, the clutch slipped.

For the hell of how short first is, it works.

You want to be fast at the drag strip, put an autobox into it!huh.gif

  14. Six Widebands and EGT's like on a properly outfitted Engine Dyno are ideal....

And there are roadgoing systems that do that.

As duragg mentions, Aircraft Spruce has neat six-channel engine performance computer/dataloggers that are reasonably priced. JeffP is trying to figure out how to put one in his ZX Dash!biggrin.gif

  15. Regs say 10 days in the state change license adn registration.

But as Military you can retain "Home of Record" documentation.

Read this carefully, I will not elaborate further:

You are only subject to emissions laws if you are registered in the state and the DMV has a record of the garaging address in the state.

You get stopped and don't have license, registration, and insurance, you're toast--they can/will impound the car and send you walking home.

  16. "Now put on your liquid teflon on the thread of your barbs and only tighten them to where they are hand tight half way. Now for the important part. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BARBS. Take your wrench and tighten them to about 2/3 of the way in, they do not need to be tightened down all the way."

The industry standard translation of this is "from finger-tight, turn 3/4 to 1 turn -- 270-360 degrees -- more" and leave them be for the anaerobic sealant to set and seal."

Overtightening NPT threads is a primary cause for leakage as some on this thread can attest!

I believe it was "Permatex" as well, and not "Pentax"---this is equivalent to Loctite PST 567 or similar.

  17. I cant even get through an intersection when taking off in first with out having to shift, mabe 50feet, then shift to 2nd.

Yep, takes you through the first timing lights and 60mph is 2 second in 2nd gear beyond that at 6500. For getting on the freeway merge, it's perfect... just about freeway speed and hit third hard on the throttle and merge ahead and pulling away...

Like stated above, it all depends on your tire sizes, if you have taller tires a 3.9 isn't untoward. If you're stock height or shorter it makes for busy work taking off.

One thing is for sure, you are above boost threshold immediately so you should be on-boost and if properly shifting on boost the rest of the way through all of the gears.

One big reason to restricting the gear selection to 3.54 and 3.7 in a turbo is that freeway merge rationale. You won't accelerate as quickly 0-60 with three shifts, which will be required on stock size tires and a 3.9. On a 3.7 you hit 100KPH (62mph) at the top of second gear, and if you granny shift like most Americans at 6000 or before, a 3.54 is what gets you there quickest.

  18. My little box full of clocks may have just become interesting to me....

5 years in Japan pulling clocks out of dashboards for 100Yen each along with the funky little silver box on the back...

Hmmmm, even with the depressed yen rate (was 268 for most of that time, making those clocks .50 cents in 1985 dollars) that may look like a good payback...

    cool.gif

  19. Oh, this reminds me to go look and see what Andy has been doing with my donated H1 in the LSR Car...

I will have to get one of these for my helmet to make manual-arts training videos. Great tool, our guy here in Australia has some awesome training videos doing it that way!

And of course, the "Send me to Jail for videotaping my own stupidity" aspect is also just as appealing as ever!
