  1. I got a 5.0 yesterday, and was told that the shifter needed to be replaced. Shifting into first, it pops out, but once it goes in it will stay there. Second will go, but grinds, so I don't use it. Third gives a small "brrrr" then goes in fine. Fourth and fifth shift in and out with no problems. Could this really just be a problem with the shifter? It's a short throw shifter, and I was told by the guy that sold me the car that there is a "ball" in there that's cracked in half. Would this cause these problems? The motor has less than 76,000 miles on it, and the tranny is newer than the motor, so unless someone has really been slamming the gears hard... the guy said he went to the performance shop here in town and bolted in a new shifter, and it eliminated the problem completly, but the guy isn't completly trust worthy either... so basically what I'm asking is: Is this really a problem concerning the short throw shifter, or am I looking at a tranny rebuild? Thanks, JB
  2. The racing stripe on my 280zx cost a grand total of $25. YES, it was paint, and YES it was good paint... $800 for racing stripes? I'd use some white out... j/k JB
  3. That was my plan. Just giving the guy a chance to e-mail me back, to no avail. I'm going to go ahead and bid in a sec... JB
  4. Sent him a message...15 minutes...hope he's on... JB
  5. Sorry for the caps. I got a 5.0 today with a short throw shifter. The guy told me I'd need to replace it. He said "The little ball in there is cracked." I'm not sure what the "little ball" is, but I found a shifter on E-Bay that looks just like it, and I'm wondering if the "ball" is included somewhere on there. LINK: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33736&item=2443099154 Can someone check real quick and let me know? Only about 40 minutes left on the auction. Thanks, JB
  6. That's what I thought too...? Before now. Carfax lists the car as a Mustang GT/GT Cobra and the title says: Model: Mustang GT/Cob This is confusing me...I'm not a Mustang buff...more into Z's, but I couldn't pass this one up, the car is almost perfect. I don't care if it is or isn't a Cobra, I'd just like to know as I'm getting it Thursday, but what's the deal with the a 1990 GT being dubbed a "Cobra"??? It can't possibly be a misprint on the title, as CarFax verified it. JB
  7. I'm about to buy a car that's listed as a 1990 GT Cobra. Carfax verified that is was indeed a Cobra. I was making sure because the car has the new Cobra rims on it...at least I think they're the new ones. The chrome 17's. The car had a four lug pattern, but it's been converted to five lug for these rims. It has a Cobra roll bar. I was just wondering if someone here new of any other major differences in the 1990 GT and the 1990 GT Cobras? Were the Cobras the convertible models? Are there any differences in HP? Thanks alot, JB
  8. http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=201316#201316 Looks like the same flares that were on the 240 I sold to Mark...he apparently sold the whole deal for $400 w/o the motor. Maybe you could get in touch with the guy who got ahold of it, he may be willing to make a little off his buy and let it go. If I remember correctly, that kit costs around $1,100! Oh, and if someone here is intrested in making the kit available again, some company was selling the molds for a little better than two grand a while back. I'll have to look them up again, but I think I may be able to find them...I could be wrong, the price for the molds could've been more than that. It was around 2 or 6...I'm thinking 2, but I've never priced body kit molds before, so I'm not sure if that sounds reasonable or not? Anyway, just giving you a heads up Tim. JB
  9. ...and you don't realize it until you've spent gobs of money on her. JB
  10. If Mark is selling the motor as is, you can take a look at http://www.angelfire.com/pro/rkr/240.html for the specs on the motor. I never had the car on a dyno, but you guys can probably make a decent educated guess from the setup. Good luck with the sale Mark. JB
  11. Mark, I'm VERY sorry to hear about this. I honestly had no clue that the car was in the condition that you discovered. Keep in mind that I'd spent MY money replacing the motor that the previous "mechanic" so splendidly threw into the car. It looks like the whole project was a slop job when I got it. I hadn't even gotten around to the interior etc. and so never discovered the things that you did. (Luckily. Otherwise I may have had a nervous breakdown... ) I apologize for selling the car to you in that condition, if I'd had any knowledge that it was in that condition I would have parted it out. zbobo, I did the second motor swap with some buddies, and it was running excellent when Mark got it, no overheating issues at all. It was running rich, but I'm thinking that the carb simply needed adjusting. If not, Mark can sell that 750 and whoever gets the motor can downgrade to a 650 maybe? (That's if he's intrested in selling it.) The only other thing the motor needed was a grommit for a valve cover. Again, I apologize Mark. In one way, it's a good thing you got me out from behind the wheel, as I may have gotten new half shafts and taken it right back out on the road/track...that would've obviously been a dangerous move. I don't know who did the original work on this thing, but I hope they never get their hands on another Z!!! Now I feel like a crook, but I think you can likly get your money back by parting it out Mark, JB
  12. Eleven letters has 13 letters in it! Whoa! 13 is an unlucky number too right? So if there are 13 unlucky letters in the unlucky number 11...then that must mean that 24 is also an unlucky number! 11 + 13 = 24... So anyone who drive a car with a big 24 on it must be unlucky right? lol Or gay... or both... (my apologies to the Gordon fans...) JB
  13. Maybe it was the half shaft that broke when I was almost home then? JB
  14. Upon further examination this morning, I noticed the left wheel's half shaft dangling around under there, apparently that's what I heard snap. After driving back from Reynolds, as I stopped at the last stop sign of the drive, I put the car in first and eased down. *Pop Pop Pop pop pop*... Tried second, and got the same thing. All the gears were doing it. I'm guessing the teeth in the chunk finally all gave way, and the first pop at the track was the first few teeth and the half shaft snapping? I'm thinking another good R200 and perhaps some custom half shafts? What exactly is involved in swapping to positive traction? How much would it cost (estimated) to do a posi swap? Weren't there positive traction 300TTs? This is my first hot rod, and I just completed my first motor swap (the car drove great, by the way, stayed at 160 degrees the whole way to Reynolds...) but I've never done any work on a rear end. I've never even had the opportunity to WATCH someone do rear end work. I'll have alot of help with this around here, so if you guys give me some info and I'm having trouble putting it together to decide on the best option @ my budget, I'll just print it out... Thanks, JB
  15. Yup... finally got the car running, and drove it to Reynolds tonight. My first run I was lined up with a buddy of mine and stagged to about 2 grand or so, and dumped the clutch. It was my first time having this car at the track, so I was going to try first gear at 2 grand and go from there. As soon as I launched, of course the tire started spining...then...pop...bogged in first, shifted to second, still no good...tried third then hit the breaks. The R200 lost a few teeth ...not totally a bad thing if I just say I had too much torque for my diff... I managed to drive the car back to Americus, and a block from the house the diff totally went out. (Sounded like popcorn back there...) So...now I have to find another differintial. Anyone got one they can recommend that would bolt up in place of the R200 I had? (It was someone in this forum's R200...but I can't remember whos it was...) I'd really like to go posi...but if that's a possible bolt in replacement then I just need something that'll hold up to 350 - 400 fpt... Thanks, JB

  19. Ok, I've got: '72 240z SBC 350 .30 over with... Dart Iron Eagle 200cc Heads Holley 750 Double Pumper Carb Comp Cam Model XE274 Siginaw 4 speed tranny Edelborck Air Gap Intake Manifold (Performer) It's on an R200 w/ 3.75 gears Anyone want to take an educated guess? Any chance of a 12? JB
  20. My slave cylinder has "42K" stamped on it. I can take a picture if I need to, but I was wondering if whoever did this job before used the Datsun slave and did some rigging, or if that's a GM slave I've got. It looks like they cut same brake line for the lines they used...the only thing I could think someone here could ID it with would be the "42K" stamp. JB
  21. Not me man, whoever did this job the first time. Since I got this thing I've been correcting mistakes. Hopefully I won't make one by bolting this cylinder to the frame. Sounds like fabricating a mount is the best way to go. JB
  22. I know the engine is going to torque some, but I'm talking about mounting it to the main frame rail, and there I think there is enough play in the rod to allow for the torque. If you guys don't think that's a good idea, what about fabricating a plate or "box" that will mount on the bellhousing bolts, then mounting the slave to that? Any other suggestions. Keep in mind I'm short on cash, so while purchasing a used scatter shield with the slave cast in is an option, I don't know if I have the money for that. By the way, the BOLTS that were welded into the bell housing were cast iron. I don't think that they was strong enough to hold up to constant torquing. Not to mention it didn't appear to be a very good welding job. Anyway, I'm going to get something done this afternoon, I've got a few other little issues I can deal with if I haven't decided anything about the slave cyl... Later guys, JB
  23. Hmm... the first ricer ever to accomplish a wheelstand... JB
  24. Well, mine didn't break, but it fell off today while I was adjusting the shift linkage in my 240...lol... JB
