Here is a question.. what type of performance brake fluid you guys running?.. performance street Z that is... dot 4? or???? synthetic????? brand????? its time to replace mine...

Hey guys I'm having some difficulties with my set up... seems like I have a bit too much hp. Is that possible.. well it is, when you nail the throttle..the rpms rise then fall before the car gets up and moves.... Seems my clutch won't hold 12 psi... dang it all. the car was just coming to life... Help.. i need a clutch recomendation for an 87 300zxt t5. I have had a lot of success with CF II's... but learning here on this board, I may have been the exception..or I never had enough hp to break it... ????????

I had the car cleaned up for a night on the town this weekend. The new much quieter diff mount is working great! Well I decided It was time... stock boost (5-6psi) is not cutting it for me..hehe It took a bit to figure out my boost controller...I thought I recalled 30 some odd clicks of the knob (turbo smart boost controller) well I had turned it to 18 and was worried when it was still at near stock boost... so when I brought the car back after testing the new diff mount, I decided to count how many more turns to get the controller fully closed (max boost)... well I counted 70 more clicks of the controller!!!! No wonder 18 clicks got me next to know where! hehehe I then counted back to closed, and opened it 40 clicks..(1 click seems to be 1/16th of a turn or so) so when I went out i was happily surprised to see 9 psi on my guage when under load! I'll drive for a few days, and then turn it to 12.. where I stop is when fuel starts to get lean! hehehe Wahoo! 9 psi put me easily out front of a modded mustang gt! ... not going to say when or where it happened....hehehe 8) not too shab! if I say so myself. My buddies modded supra eats mustangs all day long...and he walked away from me at 6 psi... So 9psi is a pretty large step... The turbo has a bit more lag than my old t3, but spools nicely by 3400 or so.. give or take depending on the gear... power is very flat feeling.. it doesn't feel peaky at all.. once the boost is up, it pulls evenly to redline.. which comes up fast.. very decieving with such a flat torque curve (in comparison to my many years with a peaky 2.9 L6) Hope you all enjoy your weekend!

It sounds like I should just keep quiet on the subject. I wouldn't go shooting my mouth off I could out handle a viper, but I will tell you..I'd love to find out.. I just have to find one to play with... I certainly understand about the totally different car theory.. an extra $80K and 30 years of technology.. he better damn well beat a Z!!!! but you know bench racing... who could beat who in a fight?.. superman or the hulk?.. the daredevil or batman?..hehehe Thanks!
-
Yea Its a weird topic.. stupid I suppose, but I was bench racing with a die hard domestic fan (who respects Z's at least a bit) We were just wasting some time, and he mentioned if I wanted a real performance car, I should just get a Viper and be done with it.. yea a z can be made to run, but for serious $$$... well long story short.. he figured a stocko viper, would handily kick a Z's ass (pure handling..no drags) .. stock, or basically any street Z.. not neccessarily a GT 1 race prepped Z.. (he isn't that stupid, and knows how lethal a Z can be) Any ways.. stocko viper vs a modded Z.. lets say.. reasonable brake upgrade.. vented rotor style... you pick.. upgraded suspension, shocks, sway bars, lowered, coilovers or not.. suspension tweeked properly.. not a hack job... quality street legal rubber. Minus any thought regarding hp..it would take a serious engine in a z to whoop a viper... .. just pure handling.. either tight twisties, or highspeed on ramps, road courses.. could a moderately modded Z suspension keep up with a viper through the curves?.. I've never had the chance to see for myself.. just curious for the benchracing.. I couldn't come up with a reasonable response.. I know a the potential of my Z.. but not too sure how it may stack up against a stock viper.. any ideas?.. this is just for fun.. nothing too serious when talking with this guy.. just friendly competition... opinions?.. should I stick it back at him, or stay quiet and eat some humble pie? hehe

I just got myself a new OEM front diff mount for my 280. I have a solid SS one that is simply driving me mad. It is transmitting the whine of the diff through my rollcage, and makes it hard to talk in the cabin. (we checked the diff first to ensure it is not a problem with the diff.) Well I managed to break my solid mount once before, so I'm pretty confident I will quickly destroy a stock one again. After seeing what some have done on this site, and after a conversation with my mech today, I have a new plan! I'm not sure if the 240's had the diff strap thingy, but my 280 does. The strap is long gone, but the mounting flange with the bolts are still there. Anone know the diameter of the shafts of those bolts?.. 8 mm? mine aren't out yet (saturday) so I haven't had the chance to look at them yet. Well here is the new idea.. I am going to use some 1/8 inch thick flat bar 1" wide (to fit the mounting flanges on the tranny tunnel from the factory) I am going to then weld on two pieces of pipe close to the same diameter as the bolts on the strap mounting flanges, and weld them to the flat bar, this will give it some way of mounting to the flanges on the tunnel.. A slight bend is needed to clear over the diff itself. I then plan to place a piece of rubber on the under side of this piece of flat bar, and try and place it a hair above the top of the diff. This is to reduce the noise transmitting through the car. When some torque is applied through the diff, it should hit this flat bar, and hold it from rising any further. (at this point if it makes a whining noise in the cabin, it won't really matter, as I will be concentrating on other things) when the diff is under minor load, I hope that it will have a bit of clearance, and by having that, keep it quiet while normal driving. It will be removeable so swapping diffs later on should be a non issue. This so far sounds like a very simple solution.. the bar might look something like this.... 0-----0 What do ya think? I have some flat bar.. I just need some pipe slightly larger in ID than the mounting bolts. I hope to do this at the same time I swap the diff mount. weather permitting... I would have sworn I had said my project was finished, and I'd be just enjoying it this year... darn tweeking...

My morals told me not to, but dang it!, my pride came in and walked all over my morals, and I just had to do it! The scene: In My Alitma 3.5 coming along stop light hell.. 5 lanes one way..(stoplight racer paradise) A SHO with the Yamaha v6 in it catches up and passes me. He cats around a bit, and gets in front of me at a light. He proceeds to give it some gas, and I merrily stay with him.. 1/2 throttle or so.. We make it up to a light where we have to stop, and I know its on.. Light goes green, and before I shut it down, I'm 2 car lengths on him (60mph or so) He keeps on it, and slows as he passes me and gives me a waving thumbs up! I'm going to need to start stamping my kills on the side of my car.. one SHO, a WRX, and a 528! I'm loving this car more and more every day! A quick kill..I'm full for a while now...hehe
-
Yea it does look like mounts for an under tray.. except they hang lower than the rails.. I wonder if it is for clearing the exhaust? I looked at my exhaust, and I will most likely have to redo mine to be able to fit a belly pan under the trany tunnel... certainly not out of the question! Girls hate poisonous gas!

Another update. I've been extremely busy this past week, but some progess was made. The entire rear suspension was pulled out, and I raised the car 1/2 inch..maybe a tich more. I picked up another set of chevette springs for the rear, and cut them one coil less than last time, and wala.. car is raised just enough. We took it for a good test run, and the car plants itself very well in a turn, and is very easy to control. because these springs are brand new, and the other ones were used, it seems that raising the car just a bit, did not make a noticeable difference in the firmness of the ride.. ie it did not get softer.. So now that that is out of the way, the aluminum has been cut up, and is currently being bent, and shaped.... hope to have some pics of the install by the end of the week. Car runs great too!!.. I can now start turning the boost up to my desired limit.. "desired limit!?????" hehe

Your absolutely right on guys! I may not like some peoples ideas of a "ride", but I do appreciate guys modding all sorts of cars..yes even Cavaliers, Corollas, Ford Focus' etc...heck even a Pacer...hmm did I just say that? But it sure would be a boring world if we all drove a Mustang or Camaro now wouldn't it? Though I do still get a chuckle everytime time a civic loaded with young guys revs me a light! I remember the days driving a Pontiac firefly for a chicken restaurant, and reving some guy in a GN!! he chuckled, and we proceeded to race anyways! hehe good sport! Its all about fun, and enjoying something you have modded to suit yourself. I too still get burned once in a while for brutalizing a classis sports gt. Its my car, and I've built it the way I like it..too bad for them!
-
oh yea.. remove the sun visors, side view mirros (replace with lighter stuff if ya have to).. Remove the spacer between the motor mounts.. flat piece of steel with rubber on booth ends.. Remove the spring steel hold ups for the hood.. torsion bar stuff..yea thats what its called. don't forget the shocks that hold those bumpers on.. they are very heavy too!.. so are the bolts that hold them!! Hmm have I gone too far?
-
Don't forget the power antennae. and as you replace some of the electrics, don't forget to remove the stock stuff.. ie ign setup etc.. don't forget when you do the body, to remove all emblems, side lights, drip rails.. ok ok I'm getting a bit out of control here...
-
Yea it probably is the best way.. I just can't justify $1000+ (to do it right) especially when there is nothing wrong with my current tank! hehehe I'd like to see a 260 tank..it must still mount under the car the same? the rear pan of the car is fairly flat.. Oh well.. the belly pan is coming along nicely anyways..
-
You guys are lame.. Just kidding.. MAD MAX is the quinsessential road movie ever!! hehehe can ya tell I'm a fan? hehe I can't believe you guys never even mentioned that one!! I even bought it on dvd so I can listen to the original Aussie soundtrack!
-
don't forget a dry cell battery.. thats good some some weight.. also there is a vibration dampner under the 280 rear diff... take it off.. it weighs 5 lbs easy. I also removed most of the rear sub floor.. on a 280 it has a wooded sub floor.. I removed most of the supports etc.. thats good for 7lbs or so. stock 280 seats weigh 30lbs.. no seat rail hardware.... Scott.
-
Well also consider the larger fuel lines, and much heavier fuel pump, larger fuel filter etc.. I know its sounds silly, but lb by lb...it adds up I guess...oh .. larger tank..more vent lines etc... BTW With a full cage, l28 with webers, 90% of the interior, larger wheels, sway bars, exhaust, wing/ body aero, bigger brakes, I had my Z weighed at 2680 with a 1/3 tank of gas. I think my car has gained weight now, as I added much more bracing, full interior back in the car, even bigger wheels, etc...

ZROSSA: Thanks! I'll take all the info I can find. Yes I Have seen the LeMans cars...I think that is more or less where I found the idea. As far as bellpans go, I already have a large one that goes tight against my airdam, and goes all the way back to my oilpan. It works very well. I have had it for 3 years now, and have seen the high side of 140mph with it. It doesn't negatively affect my cooling capacity of my engine. She runs nice and cool. For the suspension travel, my frame rails are 3 inches (72mm approx) off the ground, so my suspension all ready has very little travel in it. I'll keep you all up to date on my progress..

Anyone catch the race today? Scott Pruett won with a Jag XKR. It was an excellent day, and the race was run in my backyard at Mosport just east of Toronto. If ya saw the rub contact/ cut tire/ spin into the wall at turn 5, I was right there!! 50ft away! The vettes could not fight off the Jags this day! Lots of racing action. There were 4 races today, and that was the feature race. One series called the Street Stock Challenge Series, involves ALL Nissan cars. Namely the Nissan Sentra XE. It is an professional entry level series to keep costs down, etc.. Wicked race! and just to demonstrate HOW AWSOME Nissan cars can be, there was a tangle with the top 5 cars exiting turn 5 (hairpin..also known as Moss' corner) The lead car was tapped from behind, spun around into the armco and took some hits from 3 other cars...one tried to avoid, and put two wheels off the track..and proceeded to partially run up atop this spun car, while being pushed by another racer behind him! His car then rolled over sideways TWICE!.. with the hood rolling over along the armco, and skidding on his roof, then flipped over again! His car then spun around and landed facing the correct way all four wheels on the ground!! AND THEN HE KEPT RACING!! The marshals of course made him pull over about 400ft up the track!!! He actually kept the car going and tried to stay in the race!!! UnFricken believeable!!!! He got a standing ovation from the crowd at turn 5 for the crash, and the sheer will to keep the car going!! It took them 1 hour, and 3 tow trucks, and at least 15 guys to repair the armco!! thats how bad it got beat up! Yea for Nissan!! Excellent racing and sportsmanship!!!

Ok it took ALOT of cutting, fitting.. test fitting etc.. But I have a completed cardboard prototype built. It is kinda cool looking. I managed to get the horizontal part of the bellypan to line up level with the rear control arms. (mine are almost parallel to the ground) The pan is as wide as the outside pin on each control arm. Yea it seems low, but is actually higher than my diff... I can see some probs if I tried to back up to a curb...I might not be able to clear a curb with the rear... Not a huge factor, since my front air dam is only 3" off the ground...so I don't clear curbing with the front anyways.. It looks like it will be 6".. or so off the ground.. a bit less when including the 4 fences under it... All in all I'm extremely happy with it. I will now go ahead and purchase some aluminum this week, and try to recreate my prototype. After some more discussions with my mechanic, I'm now considering building another pan from the firewall to the the diff.. and have it mount between my frame rails.. A few screws, and be able to remove it for access... I am also in the fabing stages for some aluminum side skirts to blend in my rear flares towards the front of the car... They are pretty big, and I think it needs a slight ground effect (for looks) just to give it a lower look. and make it blend a bit smoother.. This one will be much easier to do... Oh yea... summer is here...I'm a sick sick man...

Just a quick question guys. Has anyone seen a 280 gas tank beside a 260 gas tank?.. I'd like to know if the fuel line fittings are the same.. same # and same places. I have a 280 FSM, but not one for the 260. I'm thinking of using a 260 tank for better aerodynamics under the car..(long story) I know the physical tanks look different; at least the bottom part of the tank. And yes this is still needed for an FI setup. Thanks!

This is only one of several drawings I did. This one still shows up not bad once I shrunk it down to a web friendly size. This is one of my earlier drawings, and is to scale, but is not far enough back..I want it to end at the rear valence. Progess continues...

Thanks! I had some good pics of the car, and drew in the bellypan as I see it so far, and it looks ok on the car.. the only hard part is doing a cardboard mockup. I even found some decent mounting points on the car to attach this thing. I'm not going to run the pan under the diff. with a 280, there is a fair amount of room betweent the gas tank and the diff, so I'm going to tilt the pan up at that point, so it doesn't scoop air to the upper side of the pan. Imagine a side view... from the rearmost part of the car... 7 degree downward slope of aluminum..low enough to just clear the gas tank..the continue horizontal with the ground.. maybe 12-18"..then angle back up at like 30-50 degree angle and mount behind and above the top of the diff. Hopefully that first part won't cause lift, as I cause all the air down the centre of the car/tranny tunnel to go down under the bellypan. So far it looks ok, as the air has no where to go there anyways, and must be turbulant, and eventualy exit under the gas tank. (280Z gas tanks hang much lower than a 240 tank, and are almost as low as the diff itself.) It obstructs the view of the diff quite a bit actually. It will be mounted using solid aluminum flat bar..I won't want this thing to flap around under the car. I have allowed for 4 mounting points..it should work just fine.. I can easily see why many people don't want to try this stuff.. But Hey.. I'm running out of things to mod on the car...and its a law of dimishing returns from here on in..Increasingly more money spent for smaller gains.. Oh well.. I'm a sucker for Z punishment. Best part...Z is not stuck in garage jail...

Oh man my gut hurts from laughing so hard!.. :malebitchslap:

Well I guess I'd like to add some of my Canuck "cents"..so..about a 1/5th of a cent to you guys hehe okok serious. I work for a company that takes safety so far beyond, people not accustomed to it think its rediculous and unimaginable. I was also on their safety investigation team for almost 5 years. Not entirely relevent, I know, but I just wanted to note that I understand safety. workplace or other. First off. There is no such thing as an accident. ALL accidents are preventable. That means that EVERYONE has a responsability for his/her safety at all times, as well as the safety of others around them. PERIOD! That means that everyone involved in that accident is at fault. If your not aware of your surroundings, your in a heap of trouble, and yes I even mean a person in the back seat! Now I'm not talking law fault, I'm talking about personal fault. The people in the saturn were in their right to assume it was safe to drive on the street, and that street racing is illegal, but that does not give them the right to stop thinking of thier own safety and the safety of others. Ever here the term "dead right"? I think it applies. Now the idiots who were racing. I personally believe in the motto "that there is a time and a place for everything" I don't condone street racing, but I have participated in it none the less..stupid or not.. Intent of murder, but accidental murder (sec degree murder that is mentioned above) even knowing the risks involved or flagrant breakage of the law doesn't mean that they still INTENDED to murder someone. So I agree on the manslaughter charge in this case...at least as pure logic with no emotional motives. Most people make most descisions on emotions.. This is a bad situation for humanity on the whole...I don't need to get into what happens when countries start on about honour, egos, etc.. and not wanting to look bad and back down... So back to the law.. the families of the victims though understandably upset, are essentially not the deciding factor for LAWS. That is why we have laws, so people don't solve all their problems emotionally. They were not directly involved in the actual incident. They were mearly affected by the reprecussions of peoples choices... This goes back to "an eye for eye"....not exactly humanities better law theories...cause when does it end?.. it can't... there is no suitable retribution for death. Those guys should have been thinking of safety (themselves and those around them) I think that is an overiding priority. It actually considers the fact that we are human, and are capable of making rational descisions. They still could have raced on the street even though it is still illegal.. but in a safer place, with considerations of themselves and others. Yes they should still consider their own safety, but life is dangerous..sitting in your room is still dangerous because you put your safety in others hands..ie electrician who wired your home, gas installer who did your furnace, idiot neighbour with his rifle in his backyard. Someone breaking the law doesn't make you exempt from you being responsible for your safety. Period. And no worries guys. This is just my thoughts on the subject. Lets keep it cool. Its good to be able to discuss this in a logical non emotional way. Cause I know..everyone knows someone who has been affected by tradgedy either accidental, or maliciously. I know this myself for a FACT! This site is great! Peace guys, and my prayers for those who have lost their lives, as well as those who have made poor choices, and have to live with them. Scott.

Nope, she won 3rd place 280Z OEM with her 77 280. Much to her and her Enterage's surprise actually. Orange 77 with the large 5mph chrome bumpers, and the original datsun hubcaps.
